EXPERT EYE CARE TIPS
The skin around your eyes is one of the most delicate areas of your body – and it shows the signs of age, stress and lack of sleep more easily than the rest of your face. Here are few tips from our experts to help keep your eyes looking and feeling fabulous.Avoid salty foods and alcohol. Both cause your skin to retain fluids, leading to puffiness.Rinse your face with cold water. This also helps reduce any puffiness around your eyes.Make sure you get enough sleep. As well as helping your skin regenerate and renew itself, this also helps prevent the appearance of dark circles under your eyes.Use a specialised eye cream morning and night. Our Purely Age Defying Firming Eye Cream is specifically designed to leave skin around eyes feeling firmer, smoother and tighter to help reduce visible lines and wrinkles.Wear sunscreen. Sun exposure is one of the key causes of skin ageing. Make sure you were a broad spectrum sunscreen that’s safe to use around your eyes, such as our Sun Specialist SPF40 High Protection Cream PA+++.Wear sunglasses. Even if you’re wearing sunscreen, bright sunlight causes you to squint, which leads to wrinkles over time.Apply your eye cream using your ring fingers. These fingers have the lightest touch. Warm a small amount of cream between the soft pads of your ring fingers and press and release it onto your skin, working from the inner corner of your eye outwards.Be gentle when removing eye makeup. Respect the delicate skin around your eyes, rubbing and pulling can cause wrinkles. Purely Age-Defying Nourishing Cleansing Oil effortlessly dissolves eye makeup, massage gently around the eye area, wet fingertips to emulsify and rinse thoroughly with warm water.Shop the Story: Purely Age-Defying Range

For men with sensitive skin, the daily shave can be a real pain. But it doesn’t have to be that way.If you’re a man who shaves regularly, chances are you won’t need us to tell you how painful it can be. Shaving rash, ingrown hairs, razor bumps and increased sensitivity are just a few of the traumas shaving can inflict on your skin. But by integrating a little manly skin care into your shaving routine, you can reduce – and possibly even avoid – all of the above.Step 1: Exfoliate first“Using a granular exfoliator such as our Purely Age-Defying Refining Treatment before you shave helps lift any hairs that haven’t quite broken the skin yet,” said Rebecca Nicholls, Global Education Director at Jurlique.“This promotes a smoother shave, reduces razor burn, and helps prevent ingrown hairs from developing afterwards.”Step 2: Use plenty of shaving foamShaving foam helps reduce the friction your razor places on your skin. And you don’t have to stick to traditional shaving creams.“You can use something like our Balancing Foaming Cleanser instead,” said Rebecca. “As well as reducing irritation, its gentle yet effective natural ingredients will clean and moisturise your skin while you shave.”Step 3: Soothe your skinNow that you’ve finished shaving, it’s important to cool, hydrate and calm your skin.“Our Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Moisturising Cream is perfect for this,” said Rebecca. “Its unique Comfort Complex is specifically designed to soothe skin and reduce redness.”“It’s also rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants to protect and hydrate your skin, and help it recover from shaving.”Shop the Storyb01-100200-front-087-balancing-foaming-cleanser.1415240435Balancing Foaming Cleanser – $45.00crrc-108900-front-153-calendula-redness-rescue-soothing-moisturising-cream.1415239180Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Moisturising Cream – Prices from $50.00p09-105700-front-127-purely-age-defying-refining-treatment.1415239574Purely Age-Defying Refining Treatment – $42.00

You can’t stop the clock but you can definitely slow down its impact on your skin.BE SUN-SAFEYou’ve heard it before, but the importance of protecting yourself from UV rays can’t be emphasised enough. The key? Being vigilant at all times, not just when you’re spending large chunks of time outdoors. “It’s estimated that up to 80 per cent of skin ageing can be attributed to photo ageing from incidental sun exposure,” says Jurlique’s Ultimate Beauty Expert, Rebecca Nicholls. And don’t just be sun smart in summer – it’s important to protect your skin year-round. “Just 20 minutes of incidental sun a day adds up,” says Rebecca. “Over a year you will see that this is equivalent to two weeks of unprotected exposure.”AVOID SUGARThose dark smudges under your eyes aren’t just from a lack of sleep. Toxic by-products produced when we process sugar (called glycation) can also cause those dark circles, as well as wrinkles and sagging. Cut down your intake by avoiding processed foods and sugary drinks. Boosting your intake of highly satiating foods, such as protein and fibre, will also help to fight cravings.BE SLEEP SMARTSkimping on sleep can cause blood vessels to dilate, leading to tell-tale puffiness and dark shadows under the eyes. The effects of sleep deprivation aren’t just skin deep – sleep allows our bodies to rest, repair, and regenerate cells – all crucial to slowing the ageing process.MAKE FRIENDS WITH OMEGA-3Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids protect our cells from ageing by slowing down the shortening of telomeres, the markers of biological ageing found at the end of chromosomes. To make sure your cells receive the benefits of omega-3, you could take a fish oil supplement and boost your intake of omega-3-rich foods such as salmon, sardines and walnuts.FIGHT FREE RADICALSAntioxidants help fight against free radicals, which can damage the skin and cause premature ageing. “Free radicals are everywhere,” says Rebecca Nicholls. “They occur naturally in our body and are also left behind by smoke, pollution and the sun’s radiation.”Free radicals damage skin cells through the process of oxidation – substances that help prevent this damage are called ‘anti-oxidants’. “There’s dozens, if not hundreds, of different antioxidants. Naturally occurring antioxidants can be found in many of the plant and natural ingredients that are used to formulate Jurlique products,” says Rebecca.START NOWThere’s no time like the present to slow down your skin’s ageing process. Read moreDOWN TO THE PORE – 9 FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Our Ultimate Beauty Expert, Rebecca Nicholls, shares how to properly care for your pores.1. A pore is an opening on the skin which allows sweat, oil and other hormonal secretions to be transported to the surface layers of the skin.2. Genetics play a role determining pore size. Does your mother or father have large pores? Then there’s a good chance you might too.3. Lighter and fairer skins tend to have smaller, finer pores than darker skin tones or oil rich skins.4. Pores change over time. As skin matures and loses firmness pores will also appear to stretch or look more obvious.5. Dehydrated skin will also make pores look more visible as the skin stretches and emphasises pore size.6. Cleaner pores are less obvious than pores that are clogged with makeup, dirt or oil. Regular cleansing and exfoliation are the key, while a weekly treatment mask will also help.7. A blackhead is a small plug of oil, possibly combined with dead skin cells, that sits in a pore and oxidises causing the oil to discolour.8. NEVER squeeze a blackhead (no matter how tempting!). Squeezing pimples or blackheads can also damage pores which will make them more obvious in size.9. Clean skin that is regularly exfoliated is the best way to treat and prevent blackheads. Squeezing does not help and only increases the chance of a localised infection which will then turn the blackhead into a pimple and make it much more visible.AT A GLANCE: JURLIQUE’S PORE-PERFECT PRODUCTSFor fresh clean skin try Rose Moisture Plus With Antioxidant Complex Moisturising Cleanser which not only cleans the skin but also has very gentle exfoliating properties.Daily Exfoliating Cream will help to gently remove dead skin cells and reveal smooth, clear skin. For targeted areas of congestion and multiple blackheads try Blemish Cream to help rebalance and conceal or Purifying Mask at night to help address excess oil and uneven skin texture while gently exfoliating.

Stop these four habits and you’ll make a major difference to the health of your skin.1. Washing your face before your hair in the showerShampoo and conditioner contain isopropyl myristate, which is really, really good at clogging your pores. So make sure you wash your face after your hair to make sure that any excess hair product has been rinsed from your precious skin.2. Not washing your face before bedLet’s be honest, sometimes we all feel like just crawling into bed without cleansing. But while you sleep your skin renews itself and removes toxins from your pores. So if you’re wearing makeup, these toxins can’t get through, leading to breakouts and damaged skin.3. Super-hot showersA deliciously hot shower, especially after a long day, is a fabulous treat. But unfortunately hot water on your face is a no-no. The heat makes the skin’s oil soften, and combined with soap, the skin’s oil barrier is stripped away in no time, leading to dry and itchy skin. So have lukewarm showers, especially when you run your face under the water.4. Not wearing sunscreen EVERY daySunscreen is the best protection against harmful UV rays that can seriously damage your skin and cause skin cancer. Even if you’re only outside to go to work, or to go grocery shopping, it’s vital to wear a broad-spectrum sun lotion to protect your skin. Sunscreen is the ultimate anti-ager!

Calendula Officinalis is the star ingredient in Jurlique’s groundbreaking sensitive skin range, Calendula Redness Rescue. Also known as the Marigold, Calendula is a member of the daisy family, Asteracae. An annual plant that reaches one metre in height, Calendula grows well in the Australian spring and summer and is particularly suited to growing in the climate of the Adelaide Hills.Thought to have originated in southern Europe, the Calendula likes a sunny location and tolerates most soils. A favourite among gardeners, the Calendula’s distinctive flowers, ranging in colour from pastel yellow to deep orange (thanks to high levels of antioxidants, including carotenoids) are a common sight in flower gardens around the globe.AN IMPRESSIVE HISTORYCalendula has made itself extremely useful for thousands of years. It has been used to dye fabric and even hair; it has worked its way into cooking (and looks especially pretty when its petals are sprinkled on summer salads); it has even starred as an ingredient in love potions.According to Jurlique Ultimate Beauty Expert Rebecca Nicholls “Calendula is known to help soothe and calm most major skin sensitivities,” she explains.Calendula PetalsWE GROW SUPERIOR CALENDULAThe harvest of this bloom begins around the last week in December and continues over the next three months. More than half the populations of the US, Australia, Japan and China suffer from symptoms associated with skin sensitivity. Despite being so common, sensitive skin is notoriously hard to manage.WHAT MAKE SKIN SENSITIVE?According to Jurlique Utlimate Beauty Expert, Rebecca Nicholls, sensitive skin is inflammation caused by a hyper-reaction to an external source. Any part of the body can be affected by sensitivity but the face is the usual problem area. You might also suffer from sensitive skin if you have inherited a thin stratum corneum barrier, or it has been compromised – this makes you more sensitive to factors that normal skin is protected from or does not react to.Skin that is ‘sensitised’ – a temporary state of sensitivity caused by external factors – can also hyper-react to irritants, resulting in inflammation. Skin can become sensitised when external influences damage the skin’s barrier, or after chronic exposure to damaging conditions which wear down the skin’s natural protection. The good thing about sensitised skin is that if you remove the irritant and give the skin the right care, the skin’s protective barrier can be restored.WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SENSITIVE SKIN?Blotchy, pink/red skin patchesItchy skinBroken veins on the nose and cheeksIn direct heat or sunlight, your skin may feel tight, turn red or stingDry, flaky, tight or sore skinWHY IS MY SKIN SENSITIVE?There are many factors which cause sensitive skin symptoms. Here are some of the most common:Heredity; sensitive skin can be genetic, especially if family members have eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis.Certain cosmetics or skin care products can irritate sensitive skin.Harsh household products or chemicals.Environmental factors like cold, heat, frequent and significant changes between temperatures, pollution, dryness in the air, indoor heating or air conditioning.Lifestyle issues such as stress.Poor diet. A lack of essential nutrients and can damage and dehydrate the skin, making it more sensitive.Hormonal imbalances; skin often becomes more sensitive during pregnancy, times of stress and as you get olderWHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO TREAT SENSITIVE SKIN?“Sensitive skin is often a self-diagnosed condition and sometimes it’s hard for people to really understand what environmental triggers upset or irritate their skin,” says Rebecca. “Many people with sensitive skin don’t take the time to try and rebalance their skin’s own natural protective barrier, they only focus on the visible redness and not the cause. The stronger your skin’s own defence mechanism is the fewer problems your skin will have in the future.”It’s important to look for a simple, proven ritual that can help to restore your skin’s own protective barrier as well as calm and soothe sensitive skin, she says.Look for product formulations that are free from nasties, as sensitive skin can flare up at the slightest provocation. That’s why you’ll never find harsh chemicals in the Jurlique range, just natural ingredients that calm, restore and soothe skin. The Calendula Redness Rescue range has been formulated to be free of many of the ingredients that are known to be triggers for sensitive skins. “Keep things simple and your skin will love you for it,” Rebecca adds.

Face mists…they’re just fancy water, right? Well, they are water-based but they offer so much more. Along with refreshing your skin, face mists deliver a hit of hydration to your skin whenever it needs it, as well as reawaken the senses. We sat down with our experts to find out what the fuss is all about. What is a face mist?Unlike mineral or thermal water, face mists contain skin-loving ingredients and botanicals. Think of it as your toner step, closing the pores, refreshing skin and priming your face for the next step in your skin care ritual. With a few spritzes of a face mist, surface skin is softened, delivering nutrients and moisture to the top layers of the skin. Jurlique Beauty Expert Rebecca Nicholls (she’s our fountain of all knowledge) puts it best when she says: “Imagine your skin is like a dry sponge. To allow a sponge to soak up moisture, it has to be damp. Your skin works in a similar way.”The benefits of face mistsNot only are face mists refreshing, they hydrate the skin and leave it dewier. They cool skin on contact (perfect for warmer temperatures or after a workout at the gym) and minimise the drying effects of air conditioning and heating (they’re skin care saviours during a flight). Like most skin care products, face mists are formulated for specific purposes, helping to soothe skin, set makeup, tighten pores, nourish skin and give you a healthy-looking glow. How and when to use a face mistA face mist is the second step in your skin care ritual. After cleansing, close your eyes and spritz your mist around your face. Gently press into your skin to help the ingredients absorb and follow up with your Activating Water Essence, serum, eye cream and moisturiser. Face mists can also be used throughout the day (they work over makeup and won’t cause it to smudge) or when you need a little refresh. Chances are you already have a step-by-step skin care ritual but even when we’re doing all the right things, sometimes our skin needs (or deserves) a little boost. That’s when you turn to a face mask – or, what we like to call, ‘power products.’ They’re highly concentrated and work hard to solve pesky skin issues, from dryness and oiliness to irritation and blemishes. Here’s why it’s worth adding a weekly mask to your skin care routine.THEY TARGET COMPLEXION CONCERNSFace masks are so much more than an excuse to sit down and relax for 10 minutes. They deliver high concentrations of ingredients to the skin, are formulated for specific skin types and address the concerns that come with having dry, dull, sensitive, ageing, acne-prone or oily skin. To address different skin care concerns at once, try multi-masking by layering two (or more) masks in different areas of the face.Dry and dehydrated skinWe recommend: Jurlique Rose Moisture Plus Moisturising Cream Mask. Rich and creamy, this natural moisturising face mask contains Rose Hip Oil and Shea Butter to deeply hydrate and replenish the skin. Visible signs of dehydration and premature ageing are addressed, and skin’s overall texture is improved.Sensitive skinWe recommend: Jurlique Nurturing Mask. A creamy clay face mask enriched with Shea Butter and Jojoba Seed Oil, this mask moisturises and revitalises the complexion and reduces signs of redness.Dull, tired skinWe recommend: Jurlique Intense Recovery Mask. Lightweight Rose Hip and Carrot Oils in this mask nourish the skin, while Rosa gallica and Chamomile extracts help to restore radiance. As for any impurities? The mask’s base of Green Clay absorbs them.Oily or congested skinWe recommend: Jurlique Purifying Mask. To take skin from oily to looking matte and feeling soothed and softened, this mask is our go-to. Containing Kaolin Clay and Moor extract to refine skin and address excess surface oiliness, this treatment mask is deeply purifying.Ageing skinWe recommend: Jurlique Purity Specialist Treatment Mask. With Apricot Kernel that provides a gentle exfoliating action and Willowbark extract to help smooth and refine skin’s texture, this creamy clay mask deeply cleanses and removes impurities.THEY HAVE VISIBLE RESULTSAs a focused form of skin care, face masks offer instant gratification. As well as targeting specific skin care concerns, cream masks absorb into the skin and encourage the blood vessels to expand so more blood can flow through the face (hello, radiance). Use face masks to complement your current skin care ritual, and to give your skin a boost when you’re dehydrated, tired or before an event. We like to use one once a week, and make sure we pack one in our suitcases whenever we travel.THEY’RE A RELAXING RITUALStress not only effects our mental health but can have a knock-on effect on our skin, too. Yes, masks contain skin-loving ingredients, but stopping to unwind for 10-15 minutes while they do their magic also carries a pampering, self-care element (which we could all do with more of).THEY BOOST THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OTHER SKIN CARE PRODUCTSAfter masking, your toner, serum and moisturiser will absorb better. Think of your post-mask skin like a canvas, prepped and ready for the next skin care step. Also, since masks have concentrated formulas, there’s a better chance of those ingredients penetrating the deeper layers of your skin. Win-win all-round.Complete your skincare routine by adding in a weekly face mask. Jurlique products target different skincare concerns - explore our range to find your mask match.
