5 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR SOFTER, SMOOTHER HANDS
During the height of COVID-19, hand care became a top priority as frequent washing and sanitising took centre stage. While those days are long behind us, they did leave us with a deeper understanding of the importance of self-care—especially for our hands. Our hardworking hands are often overlooked despite facing exposure to harsh cleaning ingredients, chemicals, and environmental stressors. Now is the perfect time to check in and make sure your hand care ritual is keeping your hands soft and nourished. Here’s how to do it in five easy steps. USE A GENTLE BUT EFFECTIVE HAND WASH Frequent hand washing is essential, but harsh soaps can strip your skin, leaving it dry and irritated. Opt for gentle, PH-balanced formulas like Jurlique Rose Hand Wash, enriched with Rosa gallica extract and natural botanicals that cleanse without drying. Its uplifting rose scent also adds a touch of relaxation to your daily ritual. Tip: Wash your hands for at least 30 seconds, paying special attention to your fingertips and between your fingers. EXFOLIATE TO REMOVE DRY SKIN We often overlook exfoliating our hands, but regular exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells, leaving your hands softer, smoother and more receptive to hydrating products. Tip: Next time you exfoliate your face or body, don't let the leftover formula go to waste. Massage it into your hands and cuticles to gently exfoliate dry skin. Alternatively, mix half a teaspoon of sugar with your favourite body oil to create a quick, hydrating hand scrub. USE OILS TO NOURISH DRY SKIN & CUTICLES Our hands are constantly exposed to drying elements, making oils an ideal solution to hydrate and soothe tougher areas like cuticles and nail beds. Natural oils absorb quickly to restore moisture without leaving a greasy residue. Tip: To keep your hands and cuticles soft and healthy-looking, try massaging a few drops of your favourite face oil, like our Rare Rose Face Oil. APPLY HAND CREAM REGULARLY Frequent washing and daily tasks can strip your hands of moisture, leaving them dry and vulnerable. A nourishing hand cream is essential to keep your hands hydrated, soft, and protected from environmental aggressors throughout the day. While moisture is key, remember to choose a cream rich in antioxidants to help shield your skin from environmental aggressors. Tip: Gently massage hands for a moment of self-care throughout the day. Use circular motions to release tension in your palms, knead each finger and the spaces between them, and finish with soothing strokes along the back of your hand. Choose a fragrance you love to elevate your ritual and awaken your senses. DON'T FORGET SUNSCREEN Many of us are diligent about applying sunscreen to our faces but often forget about our hands. However, hands are one of the first areas to show signs of sun damage, including dark spots and premature ageing. Since hands are regularly exposed to sunlight through everyday activities—whether driving, walking or relaxing at the beach—they require the same level of protection. Tip: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF to your hands daily to shield them from harmful UV rays and keep them looking youthful and radiant. Building a hand care routine doesn’t have to be complicated. With these simple steps and the right products, you can maintain smooth, hydrated, and healthy-looking hands that feel as good as they look.

In Greek mythology, the herb Yarrow was considered so powerful it was believed to bestow immortality on those who bathed in its waters. According to legend, Achilles was one such hero, having been dipped in the Yarrow-laced water of the river Styx by his mother when he was a baby. Alas, a spot was missed – his so-called Achilles heel – which would prove to be his fatal weakness in battle. Yarrow’s Latin name – Achillea millefolium – still hints at this legendary association. We’ve grown Yarrow on the Jurlique farm for many years and its ability to promote smoother, firmer skin makes it a star ingredient in many of our natural-based products, including our iconic Herbal Recovery range. Here’s a look at the journey this plant undergoes, as it progresses from seed to skin care.Breeding more seedsWe’ve recently increased the volume of Yarrow that’s planted on the farm, and to do this, our first step is always to collect the seeds from our existing plants. We then propagate the seeds in the hothouse on the farm.Room to growYarrow is a perennial plant that’s strong, resilient and grows very quickly. We like to give it plenty of room to grow, otherwise it can “choke” itself. As with all the botanicals on our organic farm, Yarrow grows without the use of synthetic pesticides or insecticides.Carefully hand-pickedWe have a dedicated team that picks each and every botanical by hand. Harvesting of the Yarrow takes place in the springtime, and only occurs when the flowers are at their peak. This maximises the potency of their active ingredients, which help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for smoother skin and a more youthful appearance.Drying for a continuous supplyThe Yarrow’s flowers are laid flat on large racks and placed in our heated drying cupboards; it typically takes around five or six days for them to dry completely. The dried plants can be stored for up to three years without compromising their natural, skin-enhancing properties, so we always have enough on hand to ensure a continuous supply of the best quality extracts.Extraction beginsWe follow our exclusive extraction method, to capture as many vital nutrients from our botanicals as possible. This proprietary process captures the pure, potent and active essential nutrients and minerals from the plants. The Yarrow extract is then transported to our nearby Natural Beauty Plant. It’s here that this beautiful botanical becomes a key component in your favourite products like our radiance-restoring Herbal Recovery Signature Serum.

Listen to our Farm Manager Cherie Hutchinson about what goes into harvesting and growing Spilanthes, how biodynamic* farming improves the effectiveness of the plant and what makes this botanical so unique. 3:07 2:16 At Jurlique, powerful botanicals, grown on our biodynamic farm in the Adelaide Hills, form the basis of our products. Each one is chosen for its skin-benefiting properties – it could be naturally brightening, hydrating, soothing or smoothing, and, we believe, look after your skin in the best possible way. One such botanical is Spilanthes. Native to Brazil, this plant is grown in our specially-built greenhouses on our farm, which simulate the hot and humid conditions that Spilanthes flowers need to flourish in. The seeds are planted in August and the flowers are harvested between December and May, the hottest season in Australia. As with all the other botanicals that we grow, Spilanthes are grown biodynamically. There’s a lot that goes into biodynamic* farming, but one element is that it uses the sun, moon, stars and planets of earth to bring about balance and healing - that means harvesting exclusively on days that align with the appropriate moon cycle. Spilanthes are picked on days when the moon passes through the “Air and Light” signs of Libra, Gemini and Aquarius; these stages of the moon cycle favor development of flowers, substance and colour through influence over the air, making it the optimal time to harvest. It’s a flower that we’ve had since the early days of Jurlique. Our founder Ulrike Klein discovered Spilanthes in Brazil in the 1980s and soon realized its high potency. In fact, all the Spilanthes flowers on our farm come from that very first imported seed back in the ‘80s. Thanks to the care that our farm workers put into each seed, we haven’t had to buy any new seeds since. We’ve always known that Spilanthes is a special plant. Firstly, it’s traditionally known as the ‘toothache plant’, due to its mouth-numbing ability when chewing (our team on the farm tell us that the actual flower heads make your fingers tingly, so they’re careful not to touch their eyes after they have been hand picking flowers as they have that numbing effect). Secondly, Spilanthes extract has a soothing effect on the skin. But it’s only recently that we’ve discovered it can also promote skin’s collagen production by up to 46%i, one of the key factors in preventing the appearance of ageing – which is exactly why it’s one of the key ingredients in our new anti-ageing Nutri-Define range. Discover the power of Spilanthes with Nutri-Define at Jurlique. * Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Read moreFIVE REASONS TO USE A BODY OIL
The skin on your body deserves just as much care as the skin on your face, but that doesn’t mean it always gets it. If you find yourself skipping the all-important step of post-shower body hydration, then perhaps the ritual of applying a luxurious oil to your limbs could help to make the habit stick. Oils have been used for thousands of years for their beautifying properties, and with good reason. Read on to discover why you should consider incorporating them into your daily ritual.1. BODY OILS ARE EFFECTIVE AT TACKLING DRY SKINFirst and foremost, body oils are amazing at relieving dry, scaly skin caused by changing weather, too-hot showers, and harsh cleansers. A good body oil works to hydrate the skin and lock in moisture. Contrary to what you might expect, oils are absorbed quickly without leaving a greasy residue. But when to use body oil? For best results, apply your chosen oil – we highly recommend our delightfully scented Rose Body Oil – to slightly damp skin straight after your bath or shower.2. THEY COULD POSITIVELY IMPACT YOUR MOOD, AS WELL AS YOUR SKINWhen choosing the best body oil for you, opt for a scent that aligns with your personal needs. Aromatherapy can be a powerful tool in influencing your state of mind. While our Lemon Body Oil is a revitalizing option for getting yourself going in the morning, you may wish to choose something relaxing and soothing like our Lavender Body Oil as you wind down before bedtime.3. BODY OILS ARE AN ECONOMICAL CHOICEA body oil’s versatility makes it an economical addition to your beauty arsenal. As well as slathering oil over your skin, you could add a few drops to your bath; use it to soften cuticles during an at-home mani-pedi; or apply it as a relaxing massage oil. It’s also worth noting that a little goes a long way, so you won’t find yourself having to restock too regularly either.4. THEY CAN HELP TO PROTECT AND REPAIR THE SKINNatural, plant-derived oils – such as Jojoba and Macadamia – are filled with antioxidants, vitamins, and essential fatty acids that can protect the skin against environmental aggressors, whilst also renewing damaged cells and preventing ageing. Certain oils are even thought to help heal scars, fade the appearance of stretch marks, and soothe irritated skin. Deeply nourishing, our Jojoba Carrier Oil can be used alone or blended with your favorite essential oils.5. BODY OILS CAN ENHANCE YOUR EXISTING BEAUTY PRODUCTSMaybe you’re still wondering, is body oil better than lotion? We say neither is better than the other, it’s simply down to your own personal preference. Obviously, the main difference here is texture. If you aren’t quite ready to commit, adding a drop of oil to one of our Body Lotions offers an easy way to introduce it into your regime, delivering richness and extra hydrating properties to the skin.

Many complexion concerns focus on the skin’s visible appearance: lines, wrinkles, redness, pigmentation and dullness. It makes sense – these are, of course, the qualities we’re most likely to notice when looking in the mirror. But equal attention should be given to the way your skin feels. Is it rough, tight or dehydrated? Let’s see how you can overcome both.Achieving skin that feels soft, hydrated and well-balanced takes commitment and regular use of the right botanical ingredients. That’s the true wonder of the Rose – this gorgeous flower craves six hours of sun per day and yet boasts delicately soft petals with unique hydrating properties. One of our favourite Rose varieties grown on the Jurlique farm in South Australia is Rosa gallica. Not only does it have the most sublime scent, it’s also known for its superior hydrating properties, capable of restoring the skin and leaving it feeling soft and supple. While Rose is gentle enough for most skin types, those with very sensitive skin can benefit even more from soothing botanicals, like our farm-grown Calendula. This botanical is rich in antioxidants and oleanolic acid, which helps to calm the complexion and soothe even the most sensitive skin. It’s also ideal for skin that reacts to environmental aggressors. For skin that’s very dry or dehydrated, a botanical oil, such as Rose Hip or Safflower, is full of essential fatty acids to deeply nourish. They provide immediate relief from dehydration and over time, help restore balance to the skin so that it feels softer and looks smoother. Indoor plants have been used to decorate homes and heal people since 1,000 B.C. China. Their benefits have since been recognised by the science community, proving household plants as essential indoor companions in urban dwellings. We adorn our Jurlique offices with these all-natural air purifiers, for they improve the air quality while reducing the stress levels of those working amongst them. Read on for all of the reasons to bring more greenery into your home or workspace. They pay their wayIn 1989, NASA conducted a study looking at the benefits of houseplants, naming it the NASA Clean Air Study. It found that having one plant per nine square metres of your home or office will remove toxic airborne agents, such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene. Garden Mums, Spider Plants and Dracaena are the top performing pollutant removers. Plants such as orchids, succulents, snake plants and bromeliads also absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen all through the night (unlike most other varieties that only do this during the day time), making them the perfect bedroom companions. They are visually beautifulPlants are an easy way to enhance your loungeroom or workspace. This refers to the community of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that live in your gut and on your skin, and which is essential to fighting off disease. Read moreEVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SERUMS
When it comes to skincare, serums cause the most confusion. What do they do? And where do they fit into your skincare routine? Surely, it’s one skin care step too far? The short answer is: serums are packed with potent ingredients to boost the health, hydration and vibrancy of your skin - so if you don’t swear by a serum yet, it’s time to start. Here’s our fool proof guide to face serums. What is a serum, exactly?Savvy skin care is all about layering, choosing products that complement each other in each step of your skin care ritual. Face serums are lightweight (but potent) formulas designed to provide your skin with extra hydration as well as target specific skin care concerns, such as fine lines or dullness. They’re formulated with high concentrations of active ingredients (higher than your traditional moisturiser) so only a few drops are needed to get the full benefits. Think of it as your essential skin care problem solver and complexion booster, all wrapped up into one.How do serums differ from moisturisers?Moisturisers are rich and creamy, creating a protective barrier on top of your skin to prevent any moisture from escaping while locking in the benefits of the previous products you’ve used in your ritual. While serums can contain moisturising ingredients (like Rosehip Oil in the Jurlique Rose Moisture Plus Daily Moisture Balancing Serum), they have a thin consistency and don’t lock in moisture like creams and lotions do.How to use serumsSkin care products are applied thinnest to thickest, so use after cleansing, toning, and applying our Activating Water Essence (which activates skin’s ability to retain moisture). Gently press 1-2 pumps of serum over your face, neck and décolletage and leave to sink in before applying your eye cream and moisturiser.Which serum is right for you?The best way to choose is to think of your biggest skin care concern and pick a serum that targets it best – or, have a few that you can switch up. Is your skin more dehydrated than usual? Use a hydrating serum. Long-haul flight left you feeling a bit dull and lacklustre? Reach for your face brightening serum.
