Spring is the time of year that evokes thoughts of blooming and renewal, so it’s not surprising that it’s also a popular time for health kicks. Detoxing – which minimises the effects of harmful or undesirable influences on your wellbeing – is high on people’s to-do lists, particularly when it comes to diet, exercise and lifestyle. But detoxing is about more than just upping the juice cleanses and beach runs. There’s detoxing your skin, detoxing your home, detoxing your habits – detoxing your life – with a nurturing, holistic approach to wellness.Because it’s not about cutting out the good stuff. It’s about taking care of you, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and making sure you have everything you need to live a happy, healthy life.Read on to learn about detoxing your skin, life, and everything in between.Detoxing your skinYour skin detox starts with understanding external aggressors. Pollution is a big one, whether you live in an urban or rural area. Links have been found between exposure to these particulate matter and skin health. On the other end of the spectrum, you have obvious external aggravators like make-up, which is longwearing and has direct access to skin. While cleansing and exfoliating can help remove impurities, a regular skin care ritual provides the solution you need to deeply cleanse and purify.Introducing Purity SpecialistDesigned for detoxingJurlique’s Purity Specialist range is a two-step system specifically formulated remove pollution and product build-up for a gorgeous, glowing complexion. It offers a soothing treatment ritual, giving you time to relax, reconnect and enhance wellbeing as you nurture your skin.Purity Specialist Compress ConcentrateThis potent botanical concentrate blends purifying extracts to help open pores, release impurities and prepare skin for further treatement. Or is it more about crafting a relaxing, restful atmosphere to rejuvenate in? At work, does detoxing involve better time or stress management? Or is it working on more projects that bring you joy, while allowing you to stretch and grow?Asking these questions and being openly curious about discovering answers means you’re not just problem solving, you’re unlocking opportunities (and in ways that inspire you to action). The idea behind detoxing is really about finding your optimal balance, to ensure a happy life experience. If you’ve over-extended in particular areas, the knock-on effect is to no doubt feel under-exposed in others. Returning to your equilibrium – and in ways that satisfy you physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually – is your ultimate path to wellness.1 World Health Organisation (WHO) factsheet, No 313, HYPERLINK “http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs313/en/” Ambient (outdoor) air quality and health, updated March 2014.Shop the Story:Purity Specialist Compress Concentrate | $65Blog-Wellbeing-BlogBanner-purity-concentratePurity Specialist Treatment Mask | $85Blog-Wellbeing-BlogBanner-purity-maskWant more natural skin tips and tricks? Read moreGO WITH THE GLOW – HOW TO GET YOUR BEST SUNLESS TAN EVER
Summer and a sun-kissed tan go hand in hand, even if you don’t live along the coast. But the sun can be damaging to your skin and can cause premature ageing.Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be that way. Sunless tanning products can help you achieve a bronzed body, without the dangers of baking in the sun – so you can have glowing skin all year round. Here’s the top six tips you need to get your best sunless tan ever:1. Go with the right glowThe first step is choosing the right self-tanning product for your skin.Sunless tanning options include sprays, mousses and lotions. Tanning lotions are the most hydrating, and can be applied to clean skin like a regular moisturiser. Lotions also tend to offer more even coverage, layering well for dramatic effect.2. Wax on, wax offHair removal is next on your pre-tan checklist. Wax or shave well before application (around 24 hours prior), to provide less hair resistance for tan absorption. This also minimises the chance of accidentally nicking colour away with your razor.3. Smooth operatorThe golden rule of sunless tanning: smooth skin equals self-tan success. Pamper yourself by taking the time to prepare and nourish your skin for a flawless tan.Showering prior to application washes away excess oil, while an exfoliation glove helps buff away dead skin cells (or remnants of a previous tan). This ensures the best base for a fresh application – smooth, soft skin.Make sure to moisturise rough patches, like the wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, feet and hairline, as an uneven surface can result in a patchy, streaky tan.4. Clever handiworkIt’s easy to create a natural shade across your entire body, including the palms of your hands. Avoid orange-tinted palms or residue beneath your fingernails by using latex gloves when applying your sunless tan.To apply tanning lotion to the back of your hands, use a cotton wool ball with a small amount of product. A helpful tip – add a little body moisturiser to blend product into your wrists and fingers to avoid streaking. This also applies for any smudges or mistakes.Generally speaking, acrylic nails or gel manicures and pedicures won’t be affected by self-tans. However, to be on the safe side, wipe your nails after each application as this will prevent contact stains.5. Work from the bottom upThe best time to start the tanning process is 30 minutes after showering, when your skin is most absorbent. A handy trick is to finish your shower with a short burst of cold water to shrink pores – this maximises even coverage.Apply the first layer of sunless tan, starting from the feet and ankles, and work your way back up. Don’t forget to apply to your back and neck. Self-tans can discolour your hair and eyebrows, so protect your hairline with a barrier cream if you’re applying tanner to your face. Again, mix with a small amount of moisturiser for an even application.Any leftover product should be used for the back of your hands and feet, making sure to blend well at the wrists and ankles to avoid a ‘tanning sleeve’.6. Skin careThe best way to prolong your summer glow is with effective skin aftercare.Unless you’re using an express formula, avoid showering for at least 10-12 hours, and wear loose clothing to allow the tanner to absorb. When showering after a tan, don’t worry about the colour washing away. The cosmetic bronzer will wash off to reveal a gorgeous, sun-kissed tan.Apply moisturising cream after your first shower and continue moisturising daily to extend the longevity of your tan.And drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin for a glow that lasts all year round. You don’t need to spend a fortune in a tanning salon to get a sun-kissed tan this summer. Simply follow our six tips and get the glow you’ve always wanted.Shop the Story: Sun Specialist Sunless Tanner

Our Rose Hand Cream has been a worldwide bestseller ever since we launched it in 1993. We spoke to our co-founder, Ulrike Klein, to find out what inspired her to create our iconic hand cream.“I did so much gardening that the Rose Hand Cream came out of necessity,” Ulrike told us.A passionate botanist, our co-founder Ulrike used to spend much of her time tending to the herbs and flowers at our Jurlique Farm. After many long hours of working the soil, she found her hands were often dry and in need of extra care.So she decided to develop a hand cream that would give her hands the deep hydration and protection they needed.“Before I went out to the garden I would put on my Rose Hand Cream,” Ulrike said. “It absorbed totally into my hands and really protected them. And I would use it afterwards as well.”The decision to make Roses the star ingredient of our new hand cream was no accident, Ulrike explained. “I grew up with Roses, so I’ve always had that connection to them,” Ulrike said. “And Roses are the queen of plants when it comes to skin care. They have a lot of soothing and softening qualities that really enhance the skin.”“And there is something in the scent of Roses that is very soothing on an emotional level. Roses connect you to nature, to beauty within; to that place we all want to be part of. And I’ve had so many people tell me ‘It’s the greatest hand cream in the world!’.”It seems many people still share that view, as Rose Hand Cream is one of our top-selling skin care products worldwide. And it still features the same heavenly Rose fragrance Ulrike helped develop more than 20 years ago, as well as an exclusive biodynamic† blend of potent farm botanicals that celebrate her love for nature.Since launching our Iconic Rose hand cream, we’ve add three further variants, Lavender, Jasmine and Citrus that have also proved to be firm customer favourites. We have recently transitioned our iconic hand creams to new recyclable packaging. Each one of our four signature hand creams still encompasses our original formula and contains a rich blend of potent herbs, all of which are grown and extracted at our Jurlique farm, in the Adelaide Hills.Ulrike KleinWhat ingredients make these hand creams our customers favourites? Read moreDOWN TO THE PORE – 9 FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Our Ultimate Beauty Expert, Rebecca Nicholls, shares how to properly care for your pores.1. A pore is an opening on the skin which allows sweat, oil and other hormonal secretions to be transported to the surface layers of the skin.2. Genetics play a role determining pore size. Does your mother or father have large pores? Then there’s a good chance you might too.3. Lighter and fairer skins tend to have smaller, finer pores than darker skin tones or oil rich skins.4. Pores change over time. As skin matures and loses firmness pores will also appear to stretch or look more obvious.5. Dehydrated skin will also make pores look more visible as the skin stretches and emphasises pore size.6. Cleaner pores are less obvious than pores that are clogged with makeup, dirt or oil. Regular cleansing and exfoliation are the key, while a weekly treatment mask will also help.7. A blackhead is a small plug of oil, possibly combined with dead skin cells, that sits in a pore and oxidises causing the oil to discolour.8. NEVER squeeze a blackhead (no matter how tempting!). Squeezing pimples or blackheads can also damage pores which will make them more obvious in size.9. Clean skin that is regularly exfoliated is the best way to treat and prevent blackheads. Squeezing does not help and only increases the chance of a localised infection which will then turn the blackhead into a pimple and make it much more visible.AT A GLANCE: JURLIQUE’S PORE-PERFECT PRODUCTSFor fresh clean skin try Rose Moisture Plus With Antioxidant Complex Moisturising Cleanser which not only cleans the skin but also has very gentle exfoliating properties.Daily Exfoliating Cream will help to gently remove dead skin cells and reveal smooth, clear skin. For targeted areas of congestion and multiple blackheads try Blemish Cream to help rebalance and conceal or Purifying Mask at night to help address excess oil and uneven skin texture while gently exfoliating.

Calendula Officinalis is the star ingredient in Jurlique’s groundbreaking sensitive skin range, Calendula Redness Rescue. Also known as the Marigold, Calendula is a member of the daisy family, Asteracae. An annual plant that reaches one metre in height, Calendula grows well in the Australian spring and summer and is particularly suited to growing in the climate of the Adelaide Hills.Thought to have originated in southern Europe, the Calendula likes a sunny location and tolerates most soils. A favourite among gardeners, the Calendula’s distinctive flowers, ranging in colour from pastel yellow to deep orange (thanks to high levels of antioxidants, including carotenoids) are a common sight in flower gardens around the globe.AN IMPRESSIVE HISTORYCalendula has made itself extremely useful for thousands of years. You might call the Rose “queen of the botanicals”, such is its popularity and regard. Our particular matriarch is the species Rosa gallica. Nine varieties of Rosa gallica grow on our organic farm in the Adelaide hills of South Australia, their blooms spanning a spectrum of shades, but their properties and intoxicating scent identical. This is the story of the queen of botanicals and her journey from first planting to taking centre stage in our nourishing skin care.Step 1 | South Australian provenanceAdelaide is the Rose capital of Australia, thanks in large part to its climate – hot in summer and with plenty of rain throughout winter – which is ideal for growing Roses. Nutrient-rich soil and pure, unpolluted air are some of the most important qualities of our farm and to capitalise on this pristine environment, we follow organic growing methods, keeping the farm free from synthetic fertilisers, pesticides and insecticides.Step 2 | Plant partnersPlanting is meticulously planned so that all our botanicals can work symbiotically to protect each other from harm. Our Roses are planted beside Yarrow , which nourishes and protects them from predatory insects.Step 3 | Hand-picking petalsHarvesting begins in November each year, and our Roses are gently picked by hand when at their peak. Between November and February, we harvest 30 to 60 kilograms of Rose petals each week. Some weeks, when we’ve had particularly good weather, the Roses grow extra quickly and we can harvest up to 100 kilograms of petals per week.Step 4 | Next comes dryingThe Rose petals are laid flat on large racks and placed in our heated drying cupboards for five to six days. The dried petals can be stored for up to three years without diminishing their active ingredients. Rose is a key ingredient in many of our products, so it’s important that we always have a continuous supply.Step 5 | Extracting the nutrientsTo unlock the nutrients within the Rose, each petal goes through our exclusive extraction process. This proprietary process captures the pure, potent and active essential nutrients and minerals from the plants. This precious Rose extract is then transported to our nearby Natural Beauty Plant, which was developed in line with our culture of sustainability.Step 6 | The products you loveHere at the Natural Beauty Plant, the Rosa gallica extract becomes the hero ingredient in many of our most loved products, including our bestselling Rose Moisture Plus Moisturising Lotion and Rose Hand Cream. As well as imparting its divine scent, this botanical beauty helps hydrate dry skin, leaving it feeling soft and supple.

One of the best (and easiest) ways to liven up an interior is with the addition of plants. But it’s not just a positive aesthetic effect that plants have – they’ve been proven to boost our mood, promote positivity and, it turns out, being surrounded by all that lush greenery is good for the skin, too (after all, there’s a reason why many skin care products are packed with botanicals). Here are five ways that plants can help you to maintain healthy, glowing skin. INDOOR PLANTS HYDRATE SKINIndoor plants increase the moisture in the air, which means they help to combat dry, thirsty skin and reduce symptoms like flakiness (especially helpful in winter, when the contrast between the cold air and indoor heating can quickly dry out skin). The best indoor plants for this are those with large canopies that require lots of water to survive, such as Peace Lily and Ivy. Two plants next to chair and table in white living room PLANTS PURIFY THE AIR – AND YOUR SKINHouseplants capture dust and particles from the air and can reduce the amount of pollution in the air. Thanks to their purifying qualities, plants also reduce our exposure to indoor toxins that can cause premature ageing, acne, dryness and dullness, as when our toxic burden is too big, the skin struggles to flush out toxins as quickly as it should. For the best air-purifying plants, go for the Snake Plant, Dracena or Fiddle Leaf Fig. ALOE VERA CAN SOOTHE AND MOISTURISE SKINAloe Vera has long been used for its soothing properties. That’s because it’s rich in vitamins A, C and E, making it a natural moisturiser – plus, it can also help protect the skin from free radicals. Keep an Aloe Vera plant at home and carefully crack open the leaves to scoop out the gel and apply it directly to the skin whenever you need it (bonus: this is a low-maintenance plant and only needs watering once every three weeks). Or for skin care that already harnesses the power of Aloe Vera, try our Moisture Replenishing Mask. Six succulents on table SOME HERBS CAN ENHANCE YOUR SKIN HEALTHHerbs aren’t just great for cooking – some may be full of skin-loving ingredients, too. Powerful herbs include Mint, which contains salicylic acid to clear pores, Sage, which is full of antioxidants to help clear congestion and mop up excess oil and Chamomile, an anti-inflammatory that can alleviate irritation caused by skin sensitivity. Try crushing up the fresh herbs and adding them to your bath or try our Chamomile-Rose Hydrating Essence. ROSE IS PACKED WITH BEAUTY BENEFITSRose is our signature botanical for a reason. It hydrates, soothes and tones the skin for a more radiant complexion, and rosewater can help to tone the skin while maintaining its pH and oil balance. Not just that, but Rose oil hydrates and rebalances skin, strengthens its natural barrier and helps protect it from environmental aggressors. Reap the benefits by having a Rose bush indoors or out, and enhance the results with rose-infused skin care products such as Rosewater Balancing Mist and Moisture Plus Rare Rose Serum. Plants: they’re pretty powerful. Fill your home with your favourites and use high-performing botanicals on your skin too. Shop our full range here.
