WHO IS THE MOST INSPIRING WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE? - Jurlique US

WHO IS THE MOST INSPIRING WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE?

To celebrate International Women's Day this year, we asked our Jurlique team to tell us who are the most inspiring women in their lives. Here are just some of our favorite responses. ROSEMARY RAE - GLOBAL LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST "The most inspiring woman in my world is my mum Grace. She was one of the first female truck drivers in Australia in the late 60s, early 70s. From her I learnt courage, commitment and resilience." CHERIE HUTCHINSON - FARM PRODUCTION MANAGER "My friends inspire me. I am surrounded by some really strong positive women. We look out for one another, we have a barrel of laughs and we’re also there for each other in the bad times too. Life can be tough sometimes and having women around you that support you and want to see the best for you is fantastic. More importantly is, they’re authentically themselves and that’s something I absolutely encourage all women to be." REBECCA NICHOLLS - GLOBAL LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST "The most inspiring woman in my world is my 97 year old grandmother Violet. She is an inspiration to me for her positivity and optimism and being brave to tackle anything. As an only grandchild I spent many hours with nana while I was growing up and the love, kindness and fun we shared together are some of my fondest memories. I moved to Sydney from England 30 years ago and missed our time together so much. When she was 91 she embraced the opportunity for us to be together again and emigrated to Australia with my parents. I now get to see her whenever I want to and I am always amazed by her positivity and optimism at starting a new life across the other side of the world in her 90s. I love you nana."

MOTHER'S DAY Q & A WITH COURTNEY ADAMO - Jurlique US

MOTHER'S DAY Q & A WITH COURTNEY ADAMO

As a mother, what does a regular morning look like in the Adamo house? I suppose that depends on what time you’re talking about! If you showed up to our house before 8am, you’d find a hive of activity: five kids eating breakfast, taking turns in the shower, getting dressed, searching for shoes and backpacks, and trying to get to the school bus on time and two parents juggling tasks, making breakfast, packing lunchboxes, yelling out reminders to children, and trying to get kids out of the house on time! If you showed up after 8am, it would be a lot less noisy here — I’d probably be cleaning up the kitchen, finishing my coffee, doing a load of laundry, taking a shower and getting ready to sit down to my laptop by 9:30ish. You are the eldest of 5 yourself, what was your childhood like? My childhood was really idyllic, and the older I get, the more I realise how lucky we were to be raised that way. I grew up on a farm near the sea, and my siblings and I spent most of our time outside and in nature. I had both sets of grandparents living nearby, and my father was one of ten children, so I was surrounded by loads of cousins, aunts and uncles. My parents were really loving, but also quite strict about manners and chores. We were kept busy doing tasks around the farm, but we were also given the freedom to explore and be adventurous. I spent a lot of time with my siblings, but when I wanted to be alone, I could just hop on my horse and ride around the fields behind our house. How has your upbringing influenced the way you now raise your children? I always joke that having come from a big, crazy family, the chaos in our home feels quite normal. I guess my upbringing prepared me for this. I’m also really close with my parents and my siblings, and have always wanted to raise a close-knit family as well. I remind my kids all the time how lucky they are to have each other, and we place a lot of value on family time together. I also try to make sure my kids have a lot of unscheduled, unstructured time — so that they can just be bored and play and create their own adventures. What’s your favourite way to connect to Nature? Was it something that your parents passed on to you or did you learn it later? Growing up, we lived near the sea, but not the ocean. The water was freezing cold and the beaches were rocky and wild. We spent lots of time at the beach and swimming in that frigid water, but unfortunately there were no waves to surf (and you would have needed a thick wetsuit to stay in that water for long). Now that we live here in Byron with mild water and perfect surfing waves, I have learned to surf, and I really love it. It’s such a wonderful way to connect with nature, to calm your mind, and to get a bit of exercise. I love surfing with my kids, of course, but I also really love just being out there by myself, sitting on my board, watching the waves, and feeling so present. You recently celebrated your 40th birthday, Happy birthday! Looking back what are some of your proudest and fondest moments? and let’s get real, what are some of the challenges and learning you have faced as a mother? Thank you! (I still can’t believe I’m 40! I still feel like I’m 22!) I’m actually really enjoying growing up. It’s a beautiful thing to get to know yourself as you age, to find compassion for others, and to arrive at a place where you feel comfortable in your skin. In terms of fond moments, we spent a year traveling around the world 5 years ago, and that was honestly the happiest year of my life. We have so many incredible memories from that trip, and came away feeling so connected as a family. Also, of course, the births of all of my children — especially welcoming our fifth baby, Wilkie, at home with all the other kids there in the room. It was a pretty magical moment. We’ve also had our share of challenges too, of course. Wilkie was a surprise baby, and I think Michael and I both found it difficult to go back to the baby stage after we thought we were on the other end of it. He was a particularly challenging baby and toddler too — we never had tantrums with our first four, but then Wilkie came and made sure we had our fair share of tantrums! Like every other mother on the planet, I found last year quite challenging with Covid lockdown and the intense juggle of work and motherhood and homeschooling and toddler tantrums and teenage angst. As a mother, what do you wish for your children? I think I probably echo every other mother when I say that the thing I wish for the most for my children is health and happiness. It sounds so simple and basic, but it’s really all you need in life. Of course I also hope they are kind and compassionate, honest and fair. I hope they are as interested in others as they are interesting. And I hope they honour who they really are and follow their very own path. Do you have wellness or beauty rituals that you do daily to promote your inner beauty, practical things to take care of your skin, body and mind amidst the chaos of mum life? As a family, we put a lot of thought and attention into the food we eat. My husband does most of the cooking, and he’s a really good cook. We eat a vegetarian diet and we try to eat organically and as locally as possible. My husband and I also try to squeeze in yoga and pilates together a couple of times a week, and of course simply being out in nature, being at the beach, swimming and surfing in the ocean — this in itself is a wellness ritual! Personally, I have been using the Jurlique products for nearly a year now, and I really love the products and love how it’s changed my bedtime skincare routine. Just taking the extra five minutes to care for myself before hopping into bed is a moment of self-care that I appreciate more than ever. For all the mums out there, can you please share a simple delicious recipe that you would want your children to prepare for you on Mother’s Day. Here’s a super simple, kid-friendly recipe for the most yummy blueberry muffins! Sour Cream Blueberry Muffins: -1/4 cup (55 grams) of butter at room temp. -3/4 cup of sugar -2 eggs -1 ¼ cups plus 2 tablespoons of sifted flour -1/2 tsp. baking soda -1/2 tsp. salt -3/4 cup of sour cream (or créme fraiche) -1-2 cups of blueberries -1/2 tsp. vanilla extract or paste Preheat oven to 230°C and line a muffin tin with paper or foil liners. In a medium bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating well. Sift flour, soda and salt together, and add to butter mixture alternatively with the sour cream. Gently fold in berries and vanilla. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown. (Makes 12 muffins).

CREATING HARMONY WITH NATURE - Jurlique US

CREATING HARMONY WITH NATURE

This Lunar New Year, Jurlique is thrilled to partner with a multidisciplinary artist who embodies our philosophy of working in harmony with nature. Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Raku Inoue uses various methods and techniques to create works featuring organic materials like flowers, leaves and stems of various flora species1 – many of which are gathered in his back garden2. Inspired by the same botanical beauty as Jurlique, he feels a strong connection to nature, a sense of belonging, of peace and happiness2. Raku performs a special role, in connecting art and nature he works in harmony with his surrounds. He understands the process of creation and the cycle of life, and tells the story of a dragonfly that, when he was a child, would visit his grandmother. "From time to time, a dragonfly would fly into the living room, and my grandmother would always say it was her late husband reincarnated paying a visit. As a young kid, I was told everything eventually returns to nature. So evidently, his visits were symbolic and had a great influence on how I live today. As my grandmother would say, life is precious, during and even in the afterlife and through nature, we get to see this every day2" Nature has taught Raku about love and appreciation. He understands the importance to which organic materials must be treated with care and respect – giving his projects back to the soil once completed so the cycle of life can continue2. It is these sentiments that Jurlique shares with Raku. From our certified biodynamic* farming methods to our support of a healthy ecosystem that contributes to each of our products, we each work to awaken the life force of nature. Experimenting with different concepts, Raku first assembled Jurlique’s botanical ingredients into a form of tapestry inspired by pollinating species found on flower farms2. Refining his ideas, Raku has taken inspiration from rose varieties, grown on our farm in South Australia, to create exquisite patterns exclusively for the Lunar New Year edition of our Jurlique Body Oil. Raku’s patterns of light and delicate shapes are not only a devotion to nature’s craft but to the Rosa gallica extract in our Exclusive Edition Rose Body Oil that has been planted, handpicked and extracted with uncompromising care. *Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. THE IMPORTANCE OF SKIN COLLAGEN - Jurlique US

THE IMPORTANCE OF SKIN COLLAGEN

The essential protein that keeps our complexion bouncy, collagen is the scaffolding our skin needs to stay plump1. Like most super structures, collagen breaks down over time and as we age production slows2. And while smoking and ultraviolet radiation are two of collagen’s greatest enemies3,4, we can harness natural collagen boosters to restore a plump, youthful appearance. TYPES OF COLLAGEN Of the many types of collagen, there are two essential for skin maintenance1: Collagen VII supports stability and Collagen I’s densely packed fibres, provide structure. Essentially, their job is to provide strength and enable the skin to withstand stretching1. As collagen production slows with age, skin may feel less firm and robust. COLLAGEN AND SKIN HYDRATION Water is a large percentage of collagen’s weight1,5, it’s important to stay well hydrated and substitute the cup of coffee with a glass of water. Choosing a topical product that stimulates collagen production may improve skin elasticity and hydration, to help address advanced signs of skin ageing such as deep lines and wrinkles. THE COLLAGEN NUTRIENTS Eating foods that build collagen or boost collagen production may also help promote a supple complexion6. Collagen is a protein and is made up of building blocks called amino-acids. Specifically, collagen is made up of four amino acids (lysine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine) and also requires other nutrients as precursors to its production1. Eating a diet that is rich in a variety of proteins, as a source of amino acids, and vitamin C, an essential co-factor in collagen production7, may therefore help your body’s own collagen production8. In addition, natural sources of vitamin E, such as sunflower seeds, almonds and wheatgerm oil, may help to reduce collagen breakdown. Foods such as avocadoes, spinach and butternut squash are a source of both vitamin C and vitamin E. COMPLEXION SELF-CARE Daily stimulation of the skin may help promote collagen production9. Using a facial massage roller with your favourite serum or oil, work the roller over your face, neck and decolletage for 3-5 minutes. MENOPAUSE AND COLLAGEN PRODUCTION - Jurlique US

MENOPAUSE AND COLLAGEN PRODUCTION

Responsible for skin firmness and skin elasticity, collagen is the protein that holds our complexion in high regard. But in menopause, skin quickly loses collagen1. As estrogen drops, so too does skin’s collagen production2. COLLAGEN AND THE SKIN Collagen and elastin are the scaffolding in skin3 that keeps it youthful, taut and voluminous. While collagen does decrease gradually with age, the rate is more dramatic in the first five years of menopause4. Continuing to decline for the next 20 years, skin begins to lose its firmness, sag, with wrinkles and jowls more prominent2. MENOPAUSE AND THE SKIN Skin collagen is directly influenced by estrogen loss with approximately 30% of skin collagen lost in the first 5 years after menopause5. As a result of these hormonal changes, skin loses strength and elasticity1. Changes may be seen in the under-eye area; skin may feel thinner and pores may largen. HOW TO INCREASE COLLAGEN NATURALLY As water is a large percentage of collagen’s weight3, it’s important to stay well hydrated6. Eating a diet rich in a variety of proteins and vitamin C, an essential co-factor in collagen production, may support your body’s own collagen production7, 8. And using a daily SPF can also protect the breakdown of existing collagen in your skin9. FACIAL MASSAGE TO BOOST COLLAGEN A nightly facial massage ritual at home. Begin with a neck and shoulder massage to relieve sore muscles. Warm 1-2 pumps of your favourite serum or oil between fingertips, then gently press and smooth evenly onto face, neck and décolletage. Use a warm rose quartz crystal massage roller to help restore firmness to your skin. Follow with a cool jade massage roller to relieve hot flushes and leave skin in a state of calm. 5-MINUTES WITH MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST, RAKU INOUE - Jurlique US

5-MINUTES WITH MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST, RAKU INOUE

Born in Tokyo, Japan, and now based in Montreal, Canada, Raku creates art from the natural beauty that surrounds him. Inspired from the nature he has foraged; he transforms flowers, petals and stems into beautiful works of art. Often gathered from his own back garden, Raku’s creations are elevated by botanical beauty and celebrate the life force of nature. Inspired by our belief in a healthy eco system and working in harmony with nature, we sat down with Raku to discuss his work on our new Five Roses Exclusive Edition. What was your inspiration when working on the Exclusive Edition Mist and Hand Cream Five Roses for Jurlique? The source of inspiration for the mist and hand cream was its ingredients and the environment in which they are produced. The lush biodiversity and the care that Jurlique has for their farm in Australia was very inspiring. The idea of incorporating different pollinators – butterflies and ladybugs – seemed like a great concept since they are essential to maintaining good health and ensuring the longevity of the environment. It is an homage to the wildlife that inhabits the beautiful Jurlique farm Who are the women that inspire your work? My grandmother has been a big influence on my affinity for insects. She often took me to the local park to hunt for beetles and cicadas during summer. She would teach me a lot through these creatures such as value of life. Even small insects desire to live a fulfilled life. She has also taught me to recognise various species that inhabit Japan, and that's when I realised that there were so many with distinctive characteristics. I am hoping to bring that out through my creations Where do you see a connection between your work and Jurlique? Both Jurlique and I share the same love and respect for nature and what it offers us in terms of materials and humanity's wellbeing in general. We constantly take so much from nature so anything that we can do in order to give back is mandatory. Whether it's to open discussions or to create initiatives, we both agree that action is the most important step toward nature's conservation and the continuation of all life forms towards a better future.
