WHY HYALURONIC ACID IS A SKIN CARE MUST-HAVE
The word “acid” can have negative connotations, sounding harsh and too strong, especially when it comes to skin care. But hyaluronic acid (or HA) is the opposite: it’s hydrating and helps restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier, helping it appear plump and naturally glowing. It’s a great ingredient for helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is gentle enough for skin that’s prone to sensitivity or redness. We break down everything you need to know about this skin care must-have. What is hyaluronic acid? Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar that’s found in our skin. It holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, which helps keep our skin hydrated. Unfortunately, just like collagen, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases as we get older, which is why it’s often found in skin care products aimed at reducing the signs of ageing. Eating antioxidant-rich foods such as blueberries, raspberries and kale also helps the skin to retain hyaluronic acid. Why is hyaluronic acid good for your skin? Hydration, hydration, hydration. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant, drawing and retaining water and helping to keep your skin continually moisturised. Although our bodies don’t produce as much as we age, thankfully we can apply it topically and reap the same benefits. When used in creams and serums, it brings moisture to the surface of the skin, can improve elasticity and helps it appear firmer. Hydrating and plumping? Sign us up. When to use hyaluronic acid? Because HA is so powerful, you only need to have one skin care product in your ritual that contains it to see the effects. You can use it once or twice daily under creams and lotions depending on your routine. For best results, use on slightly damp skin so the HA has water to bind to and doesn’t have to pull it from within. Does hyaluronic acid clear up skin? Hyaluronic acid has a long list of skincare benefits, from plumping and soothing to anti-ageing. But can hyaluronic acid clear up skin? While it doesn’t directly target acne or blemishes, it can contribute to a clearer, more radiant complexion. As a powerful humectant, HA brings moisture to the skin’s surface, which plumps it up and helps it appear firmer. This intense hydration combined with HA’s anti-inflammatory properties can help protect the skin from acne breakouts. Where does hyaluronic acid in skincare come from? Hyaluronic acid used in skincare products is mostly derived from plant-based sources — like wheat, corn or soy. At Jurlique, our skin care products are natural-based, using botanical extracts grown on our biodynamic* farm that are carefully chosen for their skin-loving properties — including some plants that are known as nature’s answer to hyaluronic acid: Senna seed polysaccharide: This natural active is a plant-derived form of hyaluronic acid. The extract from these seeds forms a protective film on the skin that strongly binds water to provide intense moisturisation and reduce the signs of fine lines and wrinkles. It is found in our Rare Rose range. Tremella fuciformis polysaccharide: This is a rare extract that holds up to 500 times its own weight of water. It’s considered nature’s hyaluronic acid, thanks to its ability to restore dry skin to its optimal hydrated state, improving skin elasticity and promoting a healthy appearance. Find it in our Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum, which is applied after Activating Water Essence and before your eye care. Red clover flower extract: This powerful extract has been found to enhance the hydrating role of HA and smooth out the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and it is in our Herbal Recovery Bi-Phase Serum. What hyaluronic acid ingredients should you look for? When looking for hyaluronic acid skin care products, it’s not just about the “HA” on the label. You also need to check the specific ingredients, size and diameter of the hyaluronic acid used. Products containing hydrolysed hyaluronic acid, sodium acetylated hyaluronate or sodium hyaluronate are all great options. Some brands combine different HA molecules for maximum effectiveness. Size matters too. Recent studies have shown that HA between 50 and 1,000 kDa works best, with 130 kDa being the sweet spot. Anything larger may just sit on your skin and not do much. FAQs What is sodium hyaluronate? Sodium hyaluronate is a water-soluble salt derived from hyaluronic acid. Due to its small molecular weight, sodium hyaluronate is easily absorbed into the skin while binding water to hydrate and plump. What are the natural sources of hyaluronic acid? Senna seeds, white fungus (Tremella fuciformis) and red clover flowers are some natural sources of hyaluronic acid. What does hyaluronic acid do for the skin? If you’re wondering if pure hyaluronic acid is good for the skin, the answer is a resounding yes! HA recharges the skin with hydration, alleviating dryness and restoring moisture balance. It keeps your complexion looking plump and naturally glowing. How to apply hyaluronic acid? Apply hyaluronic acid to slightly damp skin (this is key) after cleansing and exfoliating but before your moisturiser. For a nighttime hydra boost, layer on your favourite moisturiser and seal it with a few drops of facial oil. During the day, finish your routine with a moisturiser with SPF to lock in hydration and protect your skin. You can also add hyaluronic acid to your face skincare regimen through HA-infused cleansers, mists, moisturisers, serums, masks, lip care, hand care and body care products. What happens if you use too much hyaluronic acid on your face? While pure hyaluronic acid is good for the skin, too much can cause dryness, redness or irritation. Always follow up with a moisturiser to seal the hydration and provide moisture for the HA to draw — should the air around be dry. What works well with hyaluronic acid for skin? Because hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin, it generally works well with just about every skincare product, including retinol, niacinamide, vitamin C, vitamin E and AHAs/BHAs. What not to mix with hyaluronic acid? Ingredients with low pH levels, as they can make hyaluronic acid less effective. What is the best concentration of hyaluronic acid? Dermatologists recommend sticking to a hyaluronic concentration between 0.5% and 2%. Can you use hyaluronic acid under your eyes? Absolutely! Because it’s a natural molecule, hyaluronic acid is super gentle on the delicate under-eye area. It’s a common ingredient in eye care products. What foods are high in hyaluronic acid? Foods high in hyaluronic acid include bone broth, leafy greens, soy, sweet potatoes, nuts and seeds, organ meats, citrus fruits and berries. *Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Whether your concern is fine lines, puffiness or dark circles, the skin around the eyes is often one of the first places to show signs of tiredness or ageing. Because your undereye skin is particularly thin and delicate, it pays to apply products that have been formulated specifically for this area.Unlike choosing a new cleanser or moisturiser, considering our skin ‘type’ – for example oily, combination etc. – isn’t so relevant when it comes to picking out products for use around the eyes. This is because as we age, the skin around the eyes naturally becomes much drier than the skin elsewhere on the face. Therefore, it’s more about personal preference and desired results. With creams, gels and serums to choose from, it can be tricky to know where to begin in your quest for finding the right product. You might be wondering how to cure tired eyes, what the best eye cream for wrinkles is and even whether or not eye serums really work…With lots to consider, find our simple guide to help you navigate the various textures on offer and choose the right eye care product to best suit your needs.Eye CreamEye creams are typically richer in texture and probably the closest in consistency to your daily face moisturiser. If this is your first foray into the world of eye care, an eye cream can be a great, no-nonsense place to start. It can be particularly beneficial to use an eye cream at night, allowing the product to deeply absorb into the skin while you catch up on your beauty sleep. Harnessing the power of potent botanical ingredients, our Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Cream is a nourishing choice. This cream is designed to visibly improve the appearance of the skin around the eyes and minimise wrinkles, and our scientific research has shown that our Yarrow extract in the formula helps protect your skin from collagen breakdown*.Eye GelYou may have already guessed that eye gels have a lighter consistency than creams. Although gel formulas are suitable for use in both the morning and evening, their cooling, energising properties make them a soothing choice for waking up tired peepers first thing. If puffiness is your main concern, our Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Gel could be just the ticket. Charged with farm-grown botanicals and antioxidants to deliver intense moisture, it is ideal for brightening eyes. An ultra-light formula, it will leave the eye area visibly refreshed after a late night whilst also targeting fine lines and other signs of ageing.Eye SerumSo, what does eye serum do? Perhaps the most innovative of the three, eye serums are designed to penetrate deeper into the skin than creams and gels for faster, treatment-focused results. Lovely and light in texture, serums are easily absorbed by the skin, making them perfect for use under makeup. If you’re looking for a gentle yet effective approach, our brand-new Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Serum offers just that. Super silky to apply, it improves the skin’s ability to hold onto all-important moisture, while filling in fine lines as they appear. The addition of yarrow extract works to protect your skin from collagen breakdown.Shop all eye care at Jurlique.*Based on a study of the expressions of collagenase (MMP1) in skin cells treated with Bio-Intrinsic Yarrow against a control vehicle over a period of 24 hours. Read moreIS ALL YOUR EXTRA SCREEN TIME DAMAGING YOUR SKIN?
Zoom calls, emails, endless scrolling through social media and news updates…it’s no secret that a lot of us spend far too much time in front of a screen – and now more than ever. Personal preferences of whether you’re a digital native or a technophobe aside, this extra screen time could be having damaging effects on the skin…and actually lead to premature ageing, all because of the blue light that emanates from digital devices. What is blue light?Blue light is a range of the visible light spectrum, defined as having a wavelength between 400−525 nanometers. It accounts for 50% of the sunlight spectrum and is the only part of light that is visible to the naked eye. Most of our blue light exposure comes from the sun, but it also emanates from your smartphone, computers and TV screens. We’re all aware of the damaging effects of UV rays and the importance of wearing sunscreen to protect our skin but exposure to blue light can also be harmful – especially given our close proximity to smartphones and laptops. How blue light affects skinBlue light promotes stressors in skin that can cause photo-ageing; that is, ageing from exposure to light. Long-term blue light exposure can cause skin damage, including discolouration, inflammation, and weakening of the skin’s surface. How to protect your skin from harmful blue lightAs with most things health-related in life, protecting your skin from harmful blue light starts from within, with a diet rich in antioxidants (blueberries, strawberries, kale and artichokes are all good sources) and fatty acids to reduce and protect against inflammation. Topically, you can also add skin care products into your ritual that contain antioxidants, to prevent harmful free radicals and inflammation generated by light pollution. Our Rosewater Balancing Mist is not only hydrating for the skin, but it contains our exclusive Jurlique Rose extract which is a powerful antioxidant. Our iconic Herbal Recovery range is packed full of antioxidants, containing extracts of Viola Tricolor, Nasturtium, and Yarrow, that help to hydrate your skin naturally, leaving you with skin that is soft, smooth, and revitalised.

Gels, cream, serums, lotions…there’s a whole host of skin care products out there and unless you’re a fan of the 12-step routine, adding another product to your ritual can sometimes feel like another one too many. But there’s one skin care product that’s worthy of taking up prime real estate on your bathroom shelf: the eye serum.Chances are you’ve heard of face serums and already use one or two on rotation to target your skin concerns. But are you using a specific serum for the under-eye area? The skin around our eyes is thinner and more fragile than the skin on the rest of our face so it needs care, attention and specially formulated products. If you’re struggling with under eye bags, puffy eyes or wrinkles and you feel as though you need an extra boost to this area, an eye serum is the perfect addition to your skin care ritual. What is an eye serum?Like a face serum, the difference between eye serum and eye cream lies in the texture and formula. Eye serums are lighter in texture to an eye cream or gel and are highly concentrated, delivering intense hydration to help repair the skin around the eyes. An eye cream, however, seals in moisture and all the benefits of the products used before it, as well as protects the skin from environmental aggressors. And like face serums are applied before your moisturiser, eye serums are applied before your eye cream as they can penetrate deeper into the skin.Red bottle of Jurlique Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Serum next to white necklaceBenefits of using an eye serumDo eye serums really work? In a word, yes. An eye serum is so much more than an extra step. Depending on how the product is formulated, eye serums can:Hydrate and firm the skin around the eyesMinimise the appearance of wrinkles and fine linesReduce puffiness and dark circles around the eyesRestore and a radiant and youthful appearance.Of course, at Jurlique we believe that products formulated with quality, natural ingredients deliver the best results to the skin – and the same goes for eye serums. Read more5 REASONS TO USE A BODY EXFOLIATOR
Face scrubs make up an important part of a lot of people’s skin care rituals, thanks to their ability to revitalise the skin, restore your natural glow and help fight signs of ageing. But is a body exfoliator also part of your routine? Just like face scrubs, a good body scrub can help you achieve smooth, even skin and reveal your best skin yet (perfect for summer when you’re showing a little more skin – and winter, when your body is probably in need of a bit more TLC). Read on for everything you need to know about exfoliation and how to choose the best body scrub for glowing skin (if you’re curious about face exfoliators, read our go-to guide here). 5 benefits of body exfoliation 1. Reveals radiant skin Just like we have dead surface skin cells on our face, the same goes for our body. Exfoliation thoroughly clears away those dead surface skin cells, revealing that refreshed, radiant and smooth skin underneath. 2. Smooths bumpy skin Ever notice your skin feeling a bit bumpy? Exfoliating regularly helps smooth bumpy skin and clean out impurities – as well as help reduce the appearance of dark spots. 3. Boosts circulation The best way to exfoliate your body is by using a circular action and applying light pressure. This can help to boost circulation as you increase the blood flow to the skin’s surface. This also promotes skin cell regeneration. 4. Helps hydrate skin When dead surface skin cells are left to build up, it can cause your skin to become dry, and your body lotions and creams will have to work harder to penetrate the layers of the skin they’re trying to reach. By exfoliating and sloughing those dead surface skin cells away, your body care has a better chance of absorbing into the skin fully. 5. Relaxes the body and mind Our skin is our body’s largest organ, so it should be given as much care and attention as we give to our internal health. Using a body scrub in the shower means you’ll be giving your body a gentle massage and is a great excuse for some quality ‘me time’ (not that we think you ever need an excuse…). How to use a body scrub It’s best to leave your skin to soften in a lukewarm shower for a few minutes before applying your scrub. Gently massage the scrub into your skin in circular motions (be careful not to scrub too hard as this could irritate the skin) and focus on areas where your skin is driest. Rinse thoroughly and follow with a hydrating lotion or oil such as our Softening Body Lotion Rose or Rose Body Oil. How many times should you exfoliate your body? Exfoliating frequency depends on your skin type. Those with sensitive and dry skin will benefit from using a body scrub once a week, while those with oilier skin might benefit from exfoliating three times a week. Start off using one once a week and building up your frequency over time, if you wish. How to choose a body scrub For the best results, choose a natural body scrub made with ingredients that will gently remove dead surface skin cells without irritating the skin. Our Smoothing Body Exfoliating Gel contains Walnut Shell powder to gently but thoroughly lift away dead surface skin cells and impurities, as well as hydrating Rosa gallica flower extract and herbal antioxidants to leave the skin feeling cleansed, soft, smooth and more radiant. Body exfoliation is an essential step to achieve smooth, glowing skin. Explore our range of Body products now, or visit our blog for more skin care and body care tips.
Read moreHOW TO ACHIEVE DOLPHIN SKIN THIS FESTIVE SEASON
Just when we got our heads around glass skin, there’s a new need-to-know beauty term to get on board with: dolphin skin. The term was coined by celebrity makeup artist Mary Phillips who’s been responsible for Kendall Jenner and JLO’s looks – and who’s also a fan of our Rosewater Balancing Mist. The dolphin skin trend has since taken Instagram by storm – and it’s a Christmas makeup look we’ll be adopting at Jurlique HQ.Hold on…what does dolphin skin mean? Essentially, this look is about skin that’s slippery smooth, hyper-glowing, plump and hydrated…like you’ve just stepped out of crystal clear waters and are gleaming and glistening (more Bond girl than reality, then, but still a look you can achieve with the right skin care ritual and makeup products). Read on for our step by step guide to achieving dolphin skin this festive season.Step 1: ExfoliateThis is a trend that works best on freshly exfoliated skin. Every day, dead skin cells, dirt and oil build up on the surface of your skin, which can leave it feeling and looking dull and dry. A gentle exfoliator removes this build-up, revealing newer, fresher, smoother and healthier-looking skin. Exfoliating also unclogs pores. Our pores can get clogged from a build-up of sebum (naturally occurring oil in our skin), as well as dirt and grime from pollution, sweat and general everyday life – which can lead to the appearance of spots (not the slippery smooth skin we’re after, then…).Use our Daily Exfoliating Cream, our mild, creamy and non-granular face scrub that can be used on all skin types (it’s even gentle enough for sensitive skin).Step 2: HydrateEvery good skin care ritual is heavy on the hydration – and no dolphin skin makeup look would be complete without a hydrated base. After exfoliating, spray a few spritzes of your favourite face mist over your skin and allow it to sink in before applying a couple of drops of Activating Water Essence. This super hydrating face essence provides long-lasting hydration to the skin and also preps the skin, helping the products you apply afterwards (namely, your serum and moisturiser) to penetrate into the layers of your skin.Step 3: MoisturiseApply the right serum for your skin type and lock in all that moisture and benefits of the skin care products you’ve used so far in your ritual, with a hydrating moisturiser. For the ultimate in dolphin skin, use the Moisture Plus Rare Rose Lotion or Moisture Plus Rare Rose Gel Cream – both contain the extract of our exclusive Jurlique Rose, and deliver 24-hour hydration to the skin.*Step 4: Add a Face OilA couple of drops of a high-performance oil can hydrate, smooth and soften your skin (hello fewer lines and wrinkles), and make it more resilient – not to mention give you an enviable glow. Face oils are nourishing and moisturising, supplementing the oil your skin already produces. They’re also hydrophobic, meaning they help to improve the skin’s natural barrier to seal in moisture (all excellent qualities for that coveted dolphin skin look). We recommend mixing a couple of drops of Herbal Recovery Antioxidant Face Oil into your moisturiser. This blend is full of antioxidant-rich botanical oils (Grapeseed, Avocado and Rose Hip) that revitalise the complexion, and help minimise first signs of ageing and protect against environmental aggressors.Step 5: Apply your makeupYour skin should be glowing already but to take your festive dolphin skin look up a notch it’s time to apply your makeup. Start with a light, luminous coverage that has hydrating properties, add a cream blush and then dab a cream or balm based highlighter to the bridge and tip of your nose, cheekbones, temples and brow bones (note: powders won’t give you the same gleam as cream-based products). For more Christmas inspiration, discover our Christmas Catalogue.*Based on a corneometer study of 21 participants using Moisture Plus Rare Rose Lotion and Moisture Plus Rare Rose Gel Cream, after 24h
