From seed to skin: the art of slow beauty
Embracing the art of slow beauty Nature is our inspiration. And just as nature takes time to grow and flourish, so do we. When you’re deep in the throes of life, slow beauty can be your saving grace – helping you pause, reflect and make time for yourself. So how do you embrace slow beauty and a slower lifestyle? Fret not, we’re here to help. Slow beauty: a thoughtful approach to achieving replenished, radiant skin Through our commitment to biodynamic^ farming, our practices allow us to harness nature’s power at its highest potency, bringing its benefits straight to your skin. We treat our farm as an integrated, living ecosystem, continuously enriching our soil with nutrients. Guided by the moon and planets, our ingredients are brought to life without harmful pesticides and herbicides. At Jurlique, time is our friend. The art of slow beauty follows a similar approach. In short, it’s about creating meaningful results over time rather than opting for an overnight fix. Through consistency, moderation and taking things slow, your skin can embark on a natural process of renewal and recovery on its own terms. In doing so, your skin is left replenished, supple and revitalized. The journey of our plants: understanding our Bio-Intrinsic™ Method Our planting starts on our biodynamic^ farm in South Australia’s Adelaide Hills – a place renowned for its clean air and ideal climate. When the botanicals are ready to be extracted for use, we undergo our exclusive Bio-Intrinsic™ Method to harness their powers and create the best possible formulations for your skin. Through a three-step process of purification, intensification and ashing, we reunify these active natural ingredients into our products so they can work in harmony together. “Tending to the soil mirrors the care you provide for your skin. It's a gradual process involving collaboration with nature, aligning with its natural flow, and incorporating layers of nutrients to enhance soil vitality, promoting the growth of healthy plants. Just as enriching your skin with nutrients overtime imparts a natural radiance." -Cherie, Jurlique Farm Manager The nature inside our Herbal Recovery range Our new Herbal Recovery range ritual empowers you to live slower, helping you embark on a journey towards emotional wellbeing and of course, healthier-looking skin. Our Herbal Recovery range addresses exactly this, revitalizing and replenishing tired looking skin to reveal your natural, radiant glow. But how exactly does it work? Here’s how the power of nature inspired this new range . Understanding exposome First, let’s understand what exposome is. We actually experience it every day, from the effects of harsh weather on our skin to the late nights when we’ve lost track of time after scrolling on social media. Exposomes are the lifestyle factors or environmental stressors that can affect our skin over time. While not completely preventable – these factors are a part of life after all – it’s important to understand that prolonged exposure can weaken skin moisture barrier and accelerate the skin ageing process. Meet our NEW Recovery Blend We combined the power of four potent botanicals grown on our biodynamic^ farm in South Australia, that work together in harmony to revitalize and press reset on tired looking skin. Holy Basil | Known as the “elixir of life” in Ayurveda and a potent adaptogen, to help minimize signs of skin ageing Iris Root | Supports skin recovery to alleviate signs of stress and fatigue Echinacea | Has antioxidant benefits that help protect the skin from environmental stressors Black Elderflower | can help exfoliate dull skin to reveal younger looking skin. Read moreHow does the exposome affect skin?
We’re all vulnerable to exposomes, it's inevitable. The key is knowing how to manage them effectively through simple rituals that protect your skin over time, and we're here to help empower your skin to bounce back from stressors in your daily life. What are exposomes and how do they affect skin? The air pollution during your daily commute to work. The sun exposure when you’re at the beach. Even how late you went to bed last night. All of these are examples of exposomes: the external everyday factors that can impact the health and appearance of our skin. What you’ll notice though is that most of these environmental factors are all around you. We’ve all done a late-night binge-watching Netflix. Or stayed under the sun too long because the sand and surf were too tempting to pass up. We’re human, and life would be boring if we didn’t get to enjoy the things we love. So, the first step to managing the impact of exposomes? Accepting that it’s part of everyday life. You don’t need to completely change your lifestyle to accommodate it. The solution lies in understanding exposomes and making little changes to your lifestyle that provide positive effects over time. There are seven exposome factors to be aware of: Clouds of smoke and dust on a windy day (air pollution) Whether you’ve accidentally walked into a cloud of cigarette smoke or felt the wind in your hair while driving, being exposed to air pollution is quite common. These microparticles can adhere to skin and over time, increase the appearance of wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity. Manage it by | using skincare products with antioxidants that protect skin from environmental stressors. The Herbal Recovery Bi-Phase Serum is rich in vitamin E and Kakadu Plum, the highest source of vitamin C. Together with Holy Basil, Iris Root, Echinacea and Black Elderflower, this serum helps protect, brighten, and hydrate skin for a radiant, healthy-looking complexion. Fun in the sun (ultraviolet radiation) It’d be rude not to make the most out of a sunny day. But when you’re having fun outside, sometimes, we forget about sun protection and how UV rays can impact our skin. UVB rays can cause sunburn on the skin’s surface, while UVA rays can penetrate deeper, speeding up the ageing process and the risk of skin cancer. Manage it by | applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every two hours too. Treating yourself to greasy food and drinks (poor diet) We’ve all done the last-minute run to McDonalds after a wild night out or indulged in takeaway food because cooking is too much of a chore right now. But we are what we eat, and too much greasy food can take a toll on our skin. Manage it by | having a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, with the occasion night for takeaway food only. Fruits and vegetables such as oranges, strawberries, red meats, leafy greens and nuts all help to protect the skin from oxidative damage caused by free radicals like air pollution. Last-minute projects and deadlines that cause stress (psychological stress) Life sometimes gives us lemons. It could be multiple deadlines at work. Or maybe you’re nervous about a big job interview. When we’re stressed, our body produces extra cortisol that can weaken our skin barrier. Manage it by | taking time out of your day to pause. Life doesn't always have to move fast. Stress reduction techniques like meditation, deep breathing and massage can calm you down and clear your mind. Our Herbal Recovery Eye Oil Roll-On not only provides a soothing massage experience for the eyes, but also revitalizes and improves skin tone with Poppy Extract. Having a few too many wines and beers during the weekend (alcohol consumption) You work hard every day, so you deserve to let your hair down and enjoy the occasional glass of alcohol. However, consuming too much of it can dehydrate the skin and accelerate the process. Manage it by | replacing alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic options like a virgin cocktail. Sleepless nights due to a busy fast-paced lifestyle (lack of sleep) Sleepless nights caused by stress, taking care of kids and the occasional binge-watching of TV shows can dull your complexion. Manage it by | getting enough sleep and having an early bedtime. The TV isn’t going anywhere, so consider prioritizing rest to help replenish and restore your skin. Our Herbal Recovery Face Oil features adaptogenic herbs of Holy Basil to support the skin moisture barrier, while Tomato Fruit Extract protects the skin from environmental aggressors for better resilience against free radicals. Pair it with the Herbal Recovery Eye Cream, which uses antioxidant Silk Tree Extract to reduce wrinkles and Japanese Cedar Bud to moisturize. The changing weather – rain, hail or shine (temperature changes) Microbiome is the balance of microorganisms living on your skin's surface. Being exposed to ever-changing weather and hot environments can make your skin susceptible to inflammation and redness. Manage it by | checking the weather before going outside and preparing accordingly. If it’s hot, don’t forget a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. If it’s cold, protect your skin with scarves, beanies and coats.

The Rare Rose range marks the start of an eco-friendly packaging makeover with up to 94% recyclable packaging. All cartons are locally produced, made with certified sustainable materials that are 100% kerbside recyclable. Our frosted and translucent Rare Rose bottles are 100% recyclable, made using recycled content, while our droppers, pumps, caps and tubes are recyclable. While the beauty and skincare industries are taking strides towards sustainability, we all have a part to play. Opening up your bathroom cabinet, you will undoubtedly find a collection of bottles, tubes and bottles lining its shelves. So what can we do to limit waste and protect our earth? This is our eco-savvy guide to recycling and reusing your beauty and skincare products. Check the label A quick way to understand if your skin and beauty products are recyclable is by checking the label. The most common recycling symbol is the Mobius loop, which appears as a triangle with three arrows moving in a clockwise direction. Typically, colored arrows indicate that a product is recyclable, while clear arrows indicate that products are conditionally recyclable and should be returned in-store for recycling. Check the color For glass bottles and containers, another way to gauge the product's recyclability is to look at its color. Containers that are transparent, brown or green are the preferred colors when recycling glass. Check your local council to see what can be recycled Knowing when and what to recycle can be a bit of a minefield, with each country, state and council having different guidelines. Stay savvy with what you can and can’t recycle by visiting your local council or Environment Protection Authority website. Here you can find information on household recycling, waste reduction initiatives and return and earn schemes. At Jurlique, we’re proud of our ‘seed to skin’ journey. It is not just a mantra that describes how our products can be traced back to the farm-grown ingredients, it is a guiding principle that ensures the efficacy of our natural skincare formulations and our sustainable farming practices which care for our planet. It begins with the Earth Potent natural ingredients begin with preparing fertile soil at our farm nestled in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia. We carefully maintain soil health using herbal remedies and organic fertilizers to produce high-quality crops and protect our local environment. It is our soil preparations made from herbs, mineral sources, and animal manures that harness, activate and enhance the energy of nature in our farming system. Guided by the moon Our farming practices are guided by a biodynamic* calendar based on moon and its gravitational force - this indicates when vital farming activities should take place to maximize the life force energy of our botanicals. The calendar governs when to plant, cultivate and harvest various natural ingredients based on the phase of the moon. For example, our Herbal Recovery Signature range’s Yarrow is grown according to the biodynamic calendar to enhance its skin-boosting properties. Thanks to its resilient nature, it is grown along side our Roses to nurture a healthy ecosystem. Hand-harvested with care We meticulously follow the journey of each seed by hand, recording each phase from seed to germination. We hand-harvest our farm-grown ingredients with the greatest care to protect their integrity and ensure maximum vitality is preserved. Hand-harvesting allows us to select the highest-quality specimens for potent and effective skincare formulas. When it comes to our exclusive Jurlique Rose hybrid featured in our Rare Rose range, its lush blooms are carefully handpicked to preserve its intense moisturization properties. Bio-Intrinsic extraction We employ our exclusive Bio-Intrinsic method in a three-step process that boosts the potency of our natural ingredients. We capture the three basic principles of a plant - essential oils, organic liquid extract and mineral salts - then reunite them to magnify its intensity. The first step, Purification, uses steam distillation to gently lift and release essential oils, nutrients, and liquids from dried herbs. The wet herb and condensate are then combined and filtered to produce a liquid made up of plant compounds, in a process called Intensification. In the final ashing process, the liquid is burnt to capture bare trace minerals, with the resulting ash then boiled, processed, and filtered to produce an ash extract. The extracts from all three steps are then combined which results in a product that is more potent than its original form. Full traceability and transparency To maintain the highest-level of quality, sustainability, and peak performance, we ensure the traceability of all plants from our farm in Australia to the finished products. Our herbs are tracked through a comprehensive inventory system, each individual product branded with a unique number, and packaging and parcelling completed just a 40-minute drive away from our Adelaide Hills farm. The benefits of natural ingredients for your skin We believe there are plenty of natural skincare ingredients that are equally, if not more, effective than synthetic ones. We need to care for our skin in the short term and the long term, which is why we champion the use of gentle yet effective natural ingredients when it comes to nourishing your skin. For example, our Nutri-Define collection reduces the appearance ageing thanks to the Spilanthes flower and its ability to provide a pro-collagen effect^ for a smoothed and plumped appearance. In Greek mythology, the herb Yarrow was considered so powerful it was believed to bestow immortality on those who bathed in its waters. According to legend, Achilles was one such hero, having been dipped in the Yarrow-laced water of the river Styx by his mother when he was a baby. Alas, a spot was missed – his so-called Achilles heel – which would prove to be his fatal weakness in battle. Yarrow’s Latin name – Achillea millefolium – still hints at this legendary association. We’ve grown Yarrow on the Jurlique farm for many years and its ability to promote smoother, firmer skin makes it a star ingredient in many of our natural-based products, including our iconic Herbal Recovery range. Here’s a look at the journey this plant undergoes, as it progresses from seed to skin care.Breeding more seedsWe’ve recently increased the volume of Yarrow that’s planted on the farm, and to do this, our first step is always to collect the seeds from our existing plants. We then propagate the seeds in the hothouse on the farm.Room to growYarrow is a perennial plant that’s strong, resilient and grows very quickly. We like to give it plenty of room to grow, otherwise it can “choke” itself. As with all the botanicals on our organic farm, Yarrow grows without the use of synthetic pesticides or insecticides.Carefully hand-pickedWe have a dedicated team that picks each and every botanical by hand. Harvesting of the Yarrow takes place in the springtime, and only occurs when the flowers are at their peak. This maximises the potency of their active ingredients, which help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for smoother skin and a more youthful appearance.Drying for a continuous supplyThe Yarrow’s flowers are laid flat on large racks and placed in our heated drying cupboards; it typically takes around five or six days for them to dry completely. The dried plants can be stored for up to three years without compromising their natural, skin-enhancing properties, so we always have enough on hand to ensure a continuous supply of the best quality extracts.Extraction beginsWe follow our exclusive extraction method, to capture as many vital nutrients from our botanicals as possible. This proprietary process captures the pure, potent and active essential nutrients and minerals from the plants. The Yarrow extract is then transported to our nearby Natural Beauty Plant. It’s here that this beautiful botanical becomes a key component in your favourite products like our radiance-restoring Herbal Recovery Signature Serum.

Listen to our Farm Manager Cherie Hutchinson about what goes into harvesting and growing Spilanthes, how biodynamic* farming improves the effectiveness of the plant and what makes this botanical so unique. 3:07 2:16 At Jurlique, powerful botanicals, grown on our biodynamic farm in the Adelaide Hills, form the basis of our products. Each one is chosen for its skin-benefiting properties – it could be naturally brightening, hydrating, soothing or smoothing, and, we believe, look after your skin in the best possible way. One such botanical is Spilanthes. Native to Brazil, this plant is grown in our specially-built greenhouses on our farm, which simulate the hot and humid conditions that Spilanthes flowers need to flourish in. The seeds are planted in August and the flowers are harvested between December and May, the hottest season in Australia. As with all the other botanicals that we grow, Spilanthes are grown biodynamically. There’s a lot that goes into biodynamic* farming, but one element is that it uses the sun, moon, stars and planets of earth to bring about balance and healing - that means harvesting exclusively on days that align with the appropriate moon cycle. Spilanthes are picked on days when the moon passes through the “Air and Light” signs of Libra, Gemini and Aquarius; these stages of the moon cycle favor development of flowers, substance and colour through influence over the air, making it the optimal time to harvest. It’s a flower that we’ve had since the early days of Jurlique. Our founder Ulrike Klein discovered Spilanthes in Brazil in the 1980s and soon realized its high potency. In fact, all the Spilanthes flowers on our farm come from that very first imported seed back in the ‘80s. Thanks to the care that our farm workers put into each seed, we haven’t had to buy any new seeds since. We’ve always known that Spilanthes is a special plant. Firstly, it’s traditionally known as the ‘toothache plant’, due to its mouth-numbing ability when chewing (our team on the farm tell us that the actual flower heads make your fingers tingly, so they’re careful not to touch their eyes after they have been hand picking flowers as they have that numbing effect). Secondly, Spilanthes extract has a soothing effect on the skin. But it’s only recently that we’ve discovered it can also promote skin’s collagen production by up to 46%i, one of the key factors in preventing the appearance of ageing – which is exactly why it’s one of the key ingredients in our new anti-ageing Nutri-Define range. Discover the power of Spilanthes with Nutri-Define at Jurlique. * Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia.
