THE BEST NIGHT TIME SKIN CARE ROUTINE FOR ALL SKIN TYPES
With a build-up of dirt throughout the day as well as exposure to pollution and daily aggressors, night time is probably the most important time to look after your skin. Skin repairs overnight - during sleep your skin’s circulation and blood flow increases and it will rebuild collagen and renew itself as much as possible - so it’s important to add hardworking products to your evening routine. For the best results, use products that are tailored to your skin concern - that way, you can give your skin the best chance to repair and rejuvenate while you sleep. Discover our nighttime skin care steps for every skin type below. Why you should use different skin care products at night Skin care isn’t one size fits all, and the same goes for using products for daytime vs nighttime. Our Victorian State Manager, Charlotte Lyon, says: “During the day our ritual is all about preparing for the day ahead and protecting our skin against moisture loss and environmental aggressors. Whereas at night it is all about recovering the skin from the day past and harnessing the power of natural botanicals to treat skin concerns and boost radiance in the skin. Double cleansing is a must at night and ensuring that you use serums and moisturisers that focus on optimal absorption to the skin, without creating too much of a barrier.” How to look after your skin at night 1. Cleanse Your skin goes through a lot during the day (makeup, sweat, pollution…the list is endless), so night time is the perfect time to give your face a deep clean. We recommend double cleansing for the best results. Start your night face routine with a nourishing cleansing oil or micellar water to remove makeup (if you wear it), excess oil, and impurities that may have settled throughout the day. Follow up with a water-based face cleanser to thoroughly cleanse and refresh your skin. 2. Apply a serum Thanks to their lightweight formulas that target specific skin care concerns, serums are an essential part of every ritual, plus they give your skin a much-needed boost of hydration. Our soothing, hydrating and anti-ageing face serums harness the power of farm-grown botanical extracts to help you achieve smoother, more radiant and even-toned skin. 3. Moisturise Moisturisers lock in hydration and act as a protective layer on your skin. At night, use a richer formula than you would during the day, that will nourish your skin while you sleep. Our botanical-infused restorative night creams are just the ticket to visibly smoother, glowing skin in the morning. 4. Apply an eye cream Give your eyes a little extra TLC before bed. The skin around the eyes is delicate and prone to dryness. It’s also one of the first areas to show signs of ageing, so a nourishing eye cream or gel is important. What products to use for your skin concern Focus on rich, nourishing formulas and targeted treatments. The first step is identifying your skin type: do you have normal, dry, oily or combination skin? If you’re not sure, read our guide to understanding your skin type, then choose specially formulated products that address your skin care concerns too (is your dry skin congested? Or is anti-ageing a big concern alongside oiliness?) Anti-ageing Skin with visible signs of ageing needs specially-formulated products that that work to help support collagen and elastin, which gives skin its flexibility. which gives skin its flexibility. For an anti-ageing skin care routine, or to combat the signs of fine lines and wrinkles, we recommend using Nutri-Define Supreme Cleansing Foam, Activating Water Essence+ and Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum, followed by Nutri-Define Supreme Restorative Rich Cream, which is our best night cream for ageing skin. Our Education Manager Charlotte says “as a booster during the week, or for particularly parched skin, add 1-2 drops of the Purely Age Defying Firming Face Oil to your moisturiser to help with elasticity and suppleness. Don’t forget to extend Serums/Creams/Oils to face, neck and décolletage.” Dry skin and hydration Dry skin can look dull and feel tight, dehydrated and rough to touch, so needs skin care products that will lock in hydration. Double cleanse skin first with either Replenishing Cleansing Lotion or Nourishing Cleansing Oil. Gently lift away dead skin build up using our iconic Daily Exfoliating Cream, by pressing this Honey, Oat and Tahini cream into skin in a press and release motion. By gently sloughing away dead, flaky skin that typically builds up when skin is dry, you will find you have better absorption of your hydration and treatment products. Follow with our Activating Water Essence+, which is a great hydration booster for skin, and Rare Rose Serum and Cream, which have been clinically proven* to provide 24 hour hydration. *Clinical evaluation of 22 people, measured 24 hours after a single application. Sensitivity Sensitive skin is easily irritated and prone to drying. It’s important to use specially formulated products that restore the skin’s moisture barrier and calm and rebalance skin. Thoroughly remove the day using Replenishing Cleansing Lotion twice. The double cleanse will ensure any oils, bacteria or impurities that could exacerbate skin irritation - ensure to use lukewarm or tepid water. We recommend using our Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Moisturising Cream, Calendula Redness Rescue Restorative Treatment Serum and Nurturing Mask to look after your skin at night. Oil and blemish control If oiliness and blemishes are your biggest concern, treat your skin to our Revitalising Cleansing Gel, which cleanses makeup, oil and impurities in one single step. Charlotte recommends misting with “Sweet Violet & Grapefruit Mist for immediate moisture and then use Activating Water Essence+ for continuous hydration. The lightweight, water-packed formulation is well loved by oily skin.” For a moisturiser, opt for our Rare Rose Lotion, which is lightweight and non-comedogenic, and use our Purity Specialist Treatment Mask once or twice a week before bed to rebalance oiliness. Puffiness and dark circles Our Nutri-Define Supreme Eye Contour Balm is our best eye cream for lines and puffiness. It uses Snowflake Bulb extract to help restore luminosity, while Alfalfa seed and lupine protein target the appearance of under-eye puffiness. Apply with the metal ball applicator included with the Eye Contour Balm, which helps to smooth, cool and depuff the eye area promoting optimal absorption of the eye balm itself. FAQs What should a night skin care routine be? A simple night skin care routine should start with a double cleanse to thoroughly remove the day's impurities. Next, apply a serum tailored to your skin's concerns, followed by a rich night cream to hydrate and replenish your skin while you sleep. Gently pat on an eye cream around your delicate eye area to minimise dark circles and puffiness, and finish by applying a nourishing lip balm or treatment for soft, supple lips. What is good to apply on the face at night? At night, your skin shifts into repair mode, and this peaks while you sleep. Nighttime is the best time to address specific skin concerns like dullness, blemishes, dark circles or those elusive fine lines with targeted treatments. Follow with a rich, nourishing moisturiser to lock in maximum hydration. Remember to apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency for optimal absorption. What is the best serum for a night skincare routine? Our Herbal Recovery Bi-Phase Serum is a best-seller for a reason. Infused with holy basil, known as the “elixir of life", Iris root, Echinacea, Black Elderflower and potent antioxidants, this high-performing blend re-energises the skin for a smoother, softer and revitalised look. It’s safe to say that our lives have changed a lot in 2020. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has seen most people around the world endure lockdown measures, a new way of living and working from home. The way we interact with others has changed and day to day life has a very different lens – and face masks (no, not the skin care kind) are being worn on the regular, with medical experts stressing their importance to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. But with that can come negative effects for your skin, with some people experiencing problems such as breakouts – or ‘maskne’ - rashes and itchiness from wearing a mask. We spoke to our Education Manager Charlotte Lyon to get her top tips for looking after your skin while wearing a face mask. Why does wearing a face mask affect your skin?Firstly: why the new skin problems? Surely, we’ve all been through enough? According to dermatologist Dr. Adeline Kikam, friction from the mask rubbing can cause irritant contact dermatitis, and a build up of moisture from the air inside the mask can cause breakouts – not to mention the dirt and makeup that can get trapped underneath. How to prevent skin problems when wearing a face maskThe good news is, you can minimise those skin problems and keep your skin looking and feeling healthy while wearing a protective face mask. Here are our seven top tips:1. Avoid wearing makeupWearing makeup underneath your face mask is a bit like sleeping with your makeup on – it can clog the pores and cause those unwanted blemishes. Embrace natural and avoid wearing makeup where you can, opting instead for a hydrating skin care routine. If makeup is necessary, stick to the eye area only.2. Use a gentle cleanserCleansing is always important to get rid of any dirt, impurities and unblocked pores – which is more likely while wearing a mask. Cleanse your skin morning and night using a gentle cleanser that’s suitable for sensitive skin, such as our Replenishing Cleansing Lotion.3. Stay hydratedCharlotte tells us hydrated skin is important for preventing skin problems while wearing a mask. “Ensure to increase hydration levels of the skin using Activating Water Essence,” she says. “Our Hydrating Mists can be carried and used throughout the day, when able, to also help with dehydration.”4. Use a richer moisturiser“Dry skin is a common problem in winter and can be made worse by wearing a face mask,” says Charlotte. If you feel as though you’re not receiving enough nourishment from your regular moisturiser, switch to a richer formula, or add a couple of drops of face oil to your regular cream or lotion. For very dry skin, Moisture Replenishing Day Cream is a great option to provide a superior barrier to the skin.5. Reduce redness with soothing skin care productsSensitivity and redness can be a common side effect of wearing a mask, due to the mask rubbing on the skin. Try introducing soothing and calming products into your skin care ritual, such as those in our Calendula Redness Rescue range. Calendula Cream can be used topically for affected areas to help protect and comfort.6. Protect your lipsAs well as your skin, your lips can become dry and chapped when wearing a face mask regularly. Treat and protect the lip area by applying Lip Care Balm or Rose Love Balm throughout the day (using clean fingers!)7. Choose a face mask with natural fabricsNot all face masks are created equally. “Avoid synthetic fabrics, such as nylon, polyester and rayon,” says Charlotte. “These are more likely to irritate skin and cause breakouts.” Instead, choose a face mask that’s made from a natural and breathable fabric, such as cotton, and wash it with a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic laundry detergent. With a nourishing and hydrating skin care ritual, you should be able to minimise the problems that come with wearing a face mask. Keep your hands protected too, with a moisturising hand sanitiser and read our top tips for caring for your hands.

When your favourite skin care brand release a new skin care product or range, are you Type A and purchase the product right away and slather it all over? Or are you Type B and hesitant to purchase because it might exacerbate a skin concern you’ve worked hard to get under control? If you’re Type B, you most likely have sensitive skin. Whether you’re dealing with redness, irritation, or uneven skin tone, ongoing skin sensitivity can be challenging to deal with.At Jurlique, we believe in not only treating the symptoms of sensitivity, but also addressing the underlying causes and solving them through a combination of natural ingredients and a consistent skin care ritual. Read on for our top 3 tips for caring for sensitive skin and recommended skin care products for sensitive skin.1. Choose the right ingredientsNo matter what skin type you have, it’s a good idea to avoid synthetic chemical ingredients in your everyday skin care ritual. However, it’s especially important to have natural-based skin care for sensitive skin, as it may react poorly to many synthetic ingredients.Instead, opt for naturally derived ingredients that nourish and calm your skin, rather than aggravating it further. Ingredients to gravitate toward include:Calendula Flower Extract, has pronounced soothing properties and has been used to rebalance sensitivity on the skin and throughout the body.Chamomile Flower Extract, which carries calming and hydrating benefits. A great natural ingredient for both dry and combination sensitive skin types.Echinacea Extract is an astringent herb that offers soothing properties and can help balance the skinJurlique Rose extract, which can only be exclusively found in some Jurlique products, is scientifically proven to enhance the skin’s barrier function and help it retain essential moisture. You can find all of these ingredients in our Calendula Redness Rescue and Moisture Plus Rare Rose.2. Be gentle with you skinLet every action you make upon your skin be gentle and soft. While choosing the right products plays a part in managing sensitive skin, your skin care application techniques are equally important.Avoid any actions that tug your skin as this can make irritation worse. Here’s what that looks like in practice:If you wear makeup, instead of removing it with a makeup wipe, use a cleansing oil in gentle circular motion. When you follow up with a gentle cleanser, use those same delicate motions.During your moisturiser, serum or face oil step – pat and press the product in instead of rubbing. When you have sensitive skin, physical exfoliation can be intimidating, and you’d be right to proceed with caution. A lot of physical exfoliators are abrasive and can do more harm than good. Look for something non-abrasive like our Daily Exfoliating Cream – you apply it to your skin in a press-release motion (so no rough rubbing) and it gently lifts and removes dead skin and impurities.3. Keep it coolFor soothing sensitive skin, consider keeping your skincare products in the fridge until it’s time to apply them.Apart from the instant refreshing hit, there’s anecdotal evidence that the cooler temperature causes blood vessels to contract, immediately reducing the appearance of redness.Skin sensitivity is a challenge, but with the right skin care products and techniques, it can be managed. Read moreHOW TO GET ‘GLASS SKIN’ IN JUST 5 STEPS
HOW TO GET ‘GLASS SKIN' IN JUST 5 STEPS Yes, you read it correctly. Just 5 steps! If you’re a skin care aficionado, you most definitely have heard of “glass skin” by now and know that it involves a longer routine than five steps. Read on to discover how to get glass skin naturally. What is glass skin? Before we get started, let’s get into what glass skin is. The term originated – like many other beauty trends – in the Korean beauty (K-Beauty) space and describes skin that is luminous, clear and unblemished. If you look at somebody with the glass skin look, their skin is even, smooth and free of any visible texture like pores, bumps or rough patches – hence the comparison to glass.Originally, glass skin is achieved through a multi-step K-beauty routine that can include up to 10 different products and steps. Understandably, this can be impractical for many women. Thankfully, you can achieve the same effect in less time and with half the amount of products. Our 5-step glass skincare ritual 1. Cleanse If you asked us which one of these steps is non-negotiable, it would be the cleanser step. Glass skin starts with a thorough, double cleanse every night. Start with a cleansing oil like our Nourishing Cleansing Oil and muslin cloth to remove any makeup, sunscreen and surface debris, then follow it up with a gentle cream, gel or foam cleanser. 2. Essence Is it really a K-Beauty skin trend if there isn’t any essence involved? A hydrating essence like our Activating Water Essence enhances your skin’s ability to retain moisture and helps it better absorb your other products. To apply, pour a couple of drops into your palms, place your hands together and gently twist to activate the essence. Gently pat lightly onto your skin until it completely absorbs. 3. Serum Once your essence has had some time to absorb and your skin is now fully prepped, it’s time to apply your serum. Serums typically are packed with a high concentration of active ingredients. Think of it as treatment for your skin depending on your concern – it’s where the magic happens. If ageing is your concern, try our Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum to help reduce the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles. Struggling with parched skin? Hydration is key for glass skin so we recommend our Moisture Plus Rare Rose Serum to deliver intense hydration and restore your skin’s natural glow. Finally, you can soothe any rough patches or redness with our Calendula Serum. 4. Oil Now that you have on all of your water-based hydrating products, you’re going to want to seal it all in with a facial oil. Sealing in moisture supports your skin’s protective barrier. Depending on your skin type, it’s best to consider which oil will work on your skin best. Drier skin types might need a more hydrating oil, while oiler skin types benefit from a balancing oil. A glass skin must have. 5. Moisturise The theme with glass skin is hydration and moisture. We have our essence, serum, oil all applied and now we’re kicking it up a notch with a moisturiser. As with all products, choose a moisturiser that works with your skin type and one that’s appropriate for the time of day – in practice, this usually means saving richer, heavier creams for overnight use and applying gels and lighter lotions during the day. While moisturiser is the final step, we think there’s no such thing as too much glow. So we recommend spritzing your skin with our favourite Rosewater Balancing Mist to support moisture balance and leave you with dewy, radiant and supple look to the skin. Bonus Tips or Glass Skin Apply firming eye cream. You won't get glass skin if you neglect eye care. Lightly dab an eye cream to help address dark circles, puffiness and dehydration. Never skip sunscreen (daytime only). Apply SPF daily to protect your skin from UV damage and prevent premature ageing and hyperpigmentation. We recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 50, like our UV Defence Daily Lotion SPF 50+. Use targeted face masks once a week. Perfect as part of a weekly self-care routine to pamper and replenish your skin. Embrace a healthy diet and lifestyle. Getting glass skin isn’t just about products; it's about taking care of yourself too! Drink lots of water, eat well, get enough sleep (8 hours), exercise regularly and manage stress. With consistent use of the right products, glass skin is well within your reach. Shop our natural-based face skin care, lip care, hand care and body care online now, or visit our blog for more skin care tips FAQs How do you get glass skin? The secret to that coveted dewy, glowing 'glass skin' is simple – drench your skin in moisture. Think hydrating moisturisers, serums, mists, essences, oils and face masks. Gentle cleansers, exfoliants and sunscreen are also glass skin must-haves. Skincare alone isn't enough. You'll also need to balance things with healthy lifestyle habits like getting enough sleep, plenty of water, exercise, and a balanced diet. Is glass skin realistic? Glass skin is one of the most realistic skincare trends since it's all about hydration. The key is to layer super-hydrating products so skin looks dewy and plump. But don’t expect your skin to transform overnight – keep it consistent, and you'll eventually get closer to glass-like skin. Can I achieve glass skin with sensitive skin? Yes, people with sensitive skin can achieve glass skin. Look for products for glass skin with gentle and calming ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile. If you're unsure, consult a dermatologist to find the best glass skin treatment for sensitive skin. How do you know you have glass skin? Glass skin is exactly what it sounds like – skin so even, smooth, and luminous that it looks reflective and translucent like glass. Genes play a role for sure, but anyone can get that 'glass skin' glow with the right combination of glass skin products. How to get glass skin in 7 days? Want to achieve your healthiest, dewy, luminous glow in a week? Follow a consistent glass skin routine: double cleanse, exfoliate, and apply a hydrating toner, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen. Don't forget to stay hydrated and fully rested.
Read moreIS YOUR CLEANSER CAUSING YOUR BREAKOUTS?
Have you been experiencing unexplained breakouts recently? It might be due to the stress of the pandemic, lockdown and maskne (yes, it’s a real thing), but it might be something as simple as the cleanser you’re using. In fact, a lot of people breakout after using a new cleanser, which seems like an oxymoron…aren’t they supposed to clean your skin? Well, yes, but if you’re not using one that’s well-suited to your skin type, cleansers can cause a skin pH imbalance which results in irritation and can cause sudden breakouts. The best way to avoid it is to choose the best cleanser for your skin type and skin concerns. How can cleanser cause breakouts?A cleanser that is too harsh for your skin type can cause breakouts by disrupting the skin’s natural protective moisture barrier and stripping away essential oils and moisture. This can leave skin feeling dry, tight and vulnerable to oil imbalances, which can lead to breakouts. Your skin’s protective moisture barrier also prevents bacterial growth that can cause blemishes, so if it’s disrupted, that bacteria can flourish. The wrong cleanser can also disrupt the naturally acidic pH of your skin, making it more vulnerable to infection and damage. What cleanser should I use?So, it’s important to choose the right cleanser for radiant, healthy-looking skin. Pick a cleanser that suits your skin type and concern to start your skin care ritual off right (we recommend you use our Nourishing Cleansing Oil first and do a double cleanse at night to get rid of dirt and impurities):For dry, dehydrated skin: Our Replenishing Cleansing Lotion uses Marshmallow Root extract, Calendula Flower extract, and Shea butter to gently and deeply cleanse dry and sensitive skin while restoring moisture and soothing irritation. For oily skin: Thanks to Rosemary Leaf and Spilanthes extracts, our Revitalising Cleansing Gel refreshes skin and controls excess oil production and shine. For mature skin: Fight fine lines and other signs of ageing with our Nutri-Define Supreme Cleansing Foam, which uses Jojoba beads, Spilanthes and Horseradish extracts, and our signature Biosome6 blend to gently whisk away dead skin and smooth wrinkles. For combination skin: Reveal fresh, glowing skin with our Radiant Skin Foaming Cleanser, which harnesses the power of Calendula Flower, Willow Bark, and our exclusive Jurlique Rose extracts to remove impurities, unclog pores, and balance oil production.Choosing the right cleanser can protect your skin and ensure it stays radiant and blemish-free. Read moreWHAT IS COLLAGEN AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?
Collagen is a word that’s often associated with the holy grail of youthful-looking skin. It can be found in powders, pills and liquid supplements, all with the promise of keeping your skin looking and feeling its best. We’ve all heard of it and no doubt dropped it into conversation…but what is it, what does collagen do and more importantly, do we actually need it? We break down everything you need to know about this beauty buzzword. What is collagen?Collagen is the most common protein that’s found in the body. The word comes from the Greek word kólla which means glue and that’s essentially what collagen is: the ‘glue’ that holds our bones, skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments together. There are at least 28 different types of collagen found around the body. What are the benefits of collagen for skin? The type of collagen that helps us to look youthful is found in the middle layer of the skin. Together with elastin, it strengthens the skin and promotes elasticity, helping it look and feel plump, and prevent it from sagging. Collagen can also reduce dryness in the skin, helping it stay hydrated and give it that glow we all covet. At what age do we start losing collagen? As we reach the age of 20, our bodies start to produce less and less, and collagen is broken down faster than you can make it. In fact, by the time we’ve reached our 40s, we’ve lost approximately 30 per cent of our collagen supply, which is partly the reason we see lines and wrinkles in the skin. But aside from the natural degradation of collagen, there are certain lifestyle habits that can damage it and speed up the process of ageing, such as eating a lot of sugar and refined carbohydrates, too much exposure to the sun and its harmful UV rays, and smoking. How to increase collagenThe good news is that although our skin naturally loses collagen, there are ways we can help increase collagen production through eating nutrient-rich leafy greens and vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower that have high levels of Vitamin C and Sulphur – both of which are essential for collagen production. Skin care products designed to boost collagen help too: our Nutri-Define range contains farm-grown Spilanthes Flower and Horseradish Root extracts that naturally promote collagen production in the skin.Read our guide to increasing collagen naturally for more top tips and shop our full Nutri-Define range for collagen boosting skin care.
Read moreHOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN IN SUMMER
There’s nothing quite like summer. Days are endless, the sun seems to make everything better and it’s almost a given that you completely switch off and do nothing but enjoy the warmer weather for a few months. But as happy as we are to pack our coats away for the season, summer can wreak havoc on your skin if you don’t look after it properly. UVA/UVB rays are at their peak during the summer months, and the humidity and hot weather can stimulate your sebaceous glands and leave you with clogged pores – not the easy, low-maintenance summer beauty we all have in mind. To make sure you have the best skin possible this summer and discover our glowing skin care tips below. SIX TIPS FOR SUMMER-READY SKIN1. WEAR SUNSCREENBaz Lurhmann was right when he told everyone to ‘wear sunscreen’. Sunscreens act as a daily shield against harmful UV rays which penetrate your skin when exposed to the sun, as well as help prevent your skin from developing fine lines and wrinkles. Avoid sun damaged skin by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily (even if it’s cloudy) and reapply every two-three hours. 2. APPLY AN ANTIOXIDANT SERUMIf you’re not already using one, apply an antioxidant serum to your morning skin care routine. Look for one that contains vitamins C and E, which help to neutralise free radicals and strengthen and protect the skin. Try our Herbal Recovery Signature Serum and start adding antioxidant-rich foods to your diet, such as tomatoes, capsicum and strawberries. Woman touching face with hands 3. EXFOLIATEThanks to sweat and sunscreen, your pores can get clogged easily during summer, so it’s important to gently exfoliate two-three times a week. Our Daily Exfoliating Cream gently lifts and removes dead surface skin and impurities, leaving it feeling soft, smooth and polished. 4. DOUBLE CLEANSEOn those nights you’re not exfoliating, go for a double cleanse. The first cleanse will remove oil, sweat, sunscreen and make up, while the second cleanse will deep clean your pores. Try our Nourishing Cleansing Oil, it’s a great hydrating cleanser for dry skin, and leaves your skin feeling softer and smoother. 5. SWITCH TO A LIGHTER MOISTURISERA moisturiser is important every time of year but while you may reach for those richer creams in winter to help nourish dry skin, they can feel too heavy come summer. Opt for a lightweight moisturiser instead, like our Herbal Recovery Signature Moisturising Lotion, that absorbs quickly and easily into the skin while still leaving you feeling hydrated and protected. Bottle of Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist on table with white flowers 6. HYDRATEIn warmer temperatures we tend to lose more water, so drinking water regularly is a must for hydrated skin. A face mist will help to top up your hydration levels throughout the day too, plus they can be a welcome refresher once the temperatures rise. Try keeping a bottle of our Rosewater Balancing Mist or Lavender Hydrating Mist in your bag for easy use.
Read moreWHY HYALURONIC ACID IS A SKIN CARE MUST-HAVE
The word “acid” can have negative connotations, sounding harsh and too strong, especially when it comes to skin care. But hyaluronic acid (or HA) is the opposite: it’s hydrating and helps restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier, helping it appear plump and naturally glowing. It’s a great ingredient for helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is gentle enough for skin that’s prone to sensitivity or redness. We break down everything you need to know about this skin care must-have. What is hyaluronic acid? Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar that’s found in our skin. It holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, which helps keep our skin hydrated. Unfortunately, just like collagen, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases as we get older, which is why it’s often found in skin care products aimed at reducing the signs of ageing. Eating antioxidant-rich foods such as blueberries, raspberries and kale also helps the skin to retain hyaluronic acid. Why is hyaluronic acid good for your skin? Hydration, hydration, hydration. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant, drawing and retaining water and helping to keep your skin continually moisturised. Although our bodies don’t produce as much as we age, thankfully we can apply it topically and reap the same benefits. When used in creams and serums, it brings moisture to the surface of the skin, can improve elasticity and helps it appear firmer. Hydrating and plumping? Sign us up. When to use hyaluronic acid? Because HA is so powerful, you only need to have one skin care product in your ritual that contains it to see the effects. You can use it once or twice daily under creams and lotions depending on your routine. For best results, use on slightly damp skin so the HA has water to bind to and doesn’t have to pull it from within. Does hyaluronic acid clear up skin? Hyaluronic acid has a long list of skincare benefits, from plumping and soothing to anti-ageing. But can hyaluronic acid clear up skin? While it doesn’t directly target acne or blemishes, it can contribute to a clearer, more radiant complexion. As a powerful humectant, HA brings moisture to the skin’s surface, which plumps it up and helps it appear firmer. This intense hydration combined with HA’s anti-inflammatory properties can help protect the skin from acne breakouts. Where does hyaluronic acid in skincare come from? Hyaluronic acid used in skincare products is mostly derived from plant-based sources — like wheat, corn or soy. At Jurlique, our skin care products are natural-based, using botanical extracts grown on our biodynamic* farm that are carefully chosen for their skin-loving properties — including some plants that are known as nature’s answer to hyaluronic acid: Senna seed polysaccharide: This natural active is a plant-derived form of hyaluronic acid. The extract from these seeds forms a protective film on the skin that strongly binds water to provide intense moisturisation and reduce the signs of fine lines and wrinkles. It is found in our Rare Rose range. Tremella fuciformis polysaccharide: This is a rare extract that holds up to 500 times its own weight of water. It’s considered nature’s hyaluronic acid, thanks to its ability to restore dry skin to its optimal hydrated state, improving skin elasticity and promoting a healthy appearance. Find it in our Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum, which is applied after Activating Water Essence and before your eye care. Red clover flower extract: This powerful extract has been found to enhance the hydrating role of HA and smooth out the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and it is in our Herbal Recovery Bi-Phase Serum. What hyaluronic acid ingredients should you look for? When looking for hyaluronic acid skin care products, it’s not just about the “HA” on the label. You also need to check the specific ingredients, size and diameter of the hyaluronic acid used. Products containing hydrolysed hyaluronic acid, sodium acetylated hyaluronate or sodium hyaluronate are all great options. Some brands combine different HA molecules for maximum effectiveness. Size matters too. Recent studies have shown that HA between 50 and 1,000 kDa works best, with 130 kDa being the sweet spot. Anything larger may just sit on your skin and not do much. FAQs What is sodium hyaluronate? Sodium hyaluronate is a water-soluble salt derived from hyaluronic acid. Due to its small molecular weight, sodium hyaluronate is easily absorbed into the skin while binding water to hydrate and plump. What are the natural sources of hyaluronic acid? Senna seeds, white fungus (Tremella fuciformis) and red clover flowers are some natural sources of hyaluronic acid. What does hyaluronic acid do for the skin? If you’re wondering if pure hyaluronic acid is good for the skin, the answer is a resounding yes! HA recharges the skin with hydration, alleviating dryness and restoring moisture balance. It keeps your complexion looking plump and naturally glowing. How to apply hyaluronic acid? Apply hyaluronic acid to slightly damp skin (this is key) after cleansing and exfoliating but before your moisturiser. For a nighttime hydra boost, layer on your favourite moisturiser and seal it with a few drops of facial oil. During the day, finish your routine with a moisturiser with SPF to lock in hydration and protect your skin. You can also add hyaluronic acid to your face skincare regimen through HA-infused cleansers, mists, moisturisers, serums, masks, lip care, hand care and body care products. What happens if you use too much hyaluronic acid on your face? While pure hyaluronic acid is good for the skin, too much can cause dryness, redness or irritation. Always follow up with a moisturiser to seal the hydration and provide moisture for the HA to draw — should the air around be dry. What works well with hyaluronic acid for skin? Because hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin, it generally works well with just about every skincare product, including retinol, niacinamide, vitamin C, vitamin E and AHAs/BHAs. What not to mix with hyaluronic acid? Ingredients with low pH levels, as they can make hyaluronic acid less effective. What is the best concentration of hyaluronic acid? Dermatologists recommend sticking to a hyaluronic concentration between 0.5% and 2%. Can you use hyaluronic acid under your eyes? Absolutely! Because it’s a natural molecule, hyaluronic acid is super gentle on the delicate under-eye area. It’s a common ingredient in eye care products. What foods are high in hyaluronic acid? Foods high in hyaluronic acid include bone broth, leafy greens, soy, sweet potatoes, nuts and seeds, organ meats, citrus fruits and berries. *Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Jurlique’s products and farm are not certified or affiliated with Demeter® USA or Demeter International.

Whether your concern is fine lines, puffiness or dark circles, the skin around the eyes is often one of the first places to show signs of tiredness or ageing. Because your undereye skin is particularly thin and delicate, it pays to apply products that have been formulated specifically for this area.Unlike choosing a new cleanser or moisturiser, considering our skin ‘type’ – for example oily, combination etc. – isn’t so relevant when it comes to picking out products for use around the eyes. This is because as we age, the skin around the eyes naturally becomes much drier than the skin elsewhere on the face. Therefore, it’s more about personal preference and desired results. With creams, gels and serums to choose from, it can be tricky to know where to begin in your quest for finding the right product. You might be wondering how to cure tired eyes, what the best eye cream for wrinkles is and even whether or not eye serums really work…With lots to consider, find our simple guide to help you navigate the various textures on offer and choose the right eye care product to best suit your needs.Eye CreamEye creams are typically richer in texture and probably the closest in consistency to your daily face moisturiser. If this is your first foray into the world of eye care, an eye cream can be a great, no-nonsense place to start. It can be particularly beneficial to use an eye cream at night, allowing the product to deeply absorb into the skin while you catch up on your beauty sleep. Harnessing the power of potent botanical ingredients, our Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Cream is a nourishing choice. This cream is designed to visibly improve the appearance of the skin around the eyes and minimise wrinkles, and our scientific research has shown that our Yarrow extract in the formula helps protect your skin from collagen breakdown*.Eye GelYou may have already guessed that eye gels have a lighter consistency than creams. Although gel formulas are suitable for use in both the morning and evening, their cooling, energising properties make them a soothing choice for waking up tired peepers first thing. If puffiness is your main concern, our Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Gel could be just the ticket. Charged with farm-grown botanicals and antioxidants to deliver intense moisture, it is ideal for brightening eyes. An ultra-light formula, it will leave the eye area visibly refreshed after a late night whilst also targeting fine lines and other signs of ageing.Eye SerumSo, what does eye serum do? Perhaps the most innovative of the three, eye serums are designed to penetrate deeper into the skin than creams and gels for faster, treatment-focused results. Lovely and light in texture, serums are easily absorbed by the skin, making them perfect for use under makeup. If you’re looking for a gentle yet effective approach, our brand-new Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Serum offers just that. Super silky to apply, it improves the skin’s ability to hold onto all-important moisture, while filling in fine lines as they appear. The addition of yarrow extract works to protect your skin from collagen breakdown.Shop all eye care at Jurlique.*Based on a study of the expressions of collagenase (MMP1) in skin cells treated with Bio-Intrinsic Yarrow against a control vehicle over a period of 24 hours.
