PAIGE HASABALLAH’S CREATIVE PROCESS
Paige Hasaballah, or Delta Venus to her Instagram followers, is a Melbourne-based artist who draws upon her Egyptian cultural heritage and Australian upbringing to create modern, abstract art. The result is a collection of contemporary paintings that can mean so many different things to different people: the sign of a great artist. In celebration of our latest Adriana Picker-designed limited-edition products – Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense Deluxe Edition and Jurlique Rose Luxe Edition Hand Cream – we spoke to Paige about her own creative process and how she incorporates the products into her own daily routine.Tell us about your work and what you do?I am a visual artist, designer and poet. My work is about the embodiment of light and dark, conscious and subconscious, inner and outer worlds. My aim is to create a space within which people experiencing the work can reflect on themselves. How did you get into this position?Looking back on it I can't help but see some very divine timing. My design work kept me working predominantly on computers or electronic devices, so I had a real pull to work in a more tactile space and use my hands. I have always been really drawn to building or creating with different materials. In late 2017, my family lost our grandmother on my Egyptian side. Within a number of days after she passed, I began painting for the first time in my life. Things took off really quickly from there as I began to publicly share what I was creating with others. Now I see myself as a vessel for the work to flow through and into the lives of others.Describe your process when it comes to your work – how do you tackle a new project?I hold space within myself for the work to move through me. I think of it as a sort of meditation or prayer. A vision will come to me in a dream or a moment of quiet surrender, I pick up water materials I am pulled to and breathe deeply. The work sort of creates itself, it's just my job to get out of the way. What challenges do you face in your work?I think my main challenge is around resisting the natural flow of things. At times I find myself trying to force a piece of art or painting because I think I "should" be doing that. I am yet to force out a piece of work I am happy with. Some days you need to bake a loaf of bread instead or go for a walk in the park or have a glass of wine with a friend. I am constantly reminding myself that magic happens in the flow state. What do you find most rewarding? The most rewarding part of the creative process for me is the way it allows me to connect with others. I have connected with so many incredible people across the world through this practice. Hearing the way one of my pieces inspires someone or prompts them to lean into their own power is the most fulfilling part of my practice.Face Scrub with leaf on a trayWhen you’re experiencing a creative block, how do you get out of it?A year ago, I would have said to push through it. Now my approach is a little more gentle. When I am feeling a creative block, I do something else, I follow the natural flow of my energy. When I am not resisting where it wants to take me, it always brings me back to creating. Some days I just need to detour past a few other things first. What advice would you give to others who are looking to explore their creativity?Get started and start with anything. Be playful with it. Try out different mediums. Don't be too attached to any sort of outcome and just see what comes up. You cannot fail in art, but you are certainly cheating yourself out of the pleasure of creation by holding yourself back.Talk us through how you use your limited edition Jurlique products throughout your dayThe Jurlique Rose Luxe Edition Hand Cream has been an absolute lifesaver for me over the past few weeks. I have been restoring furniture outside of my other creative work and all of that sanding really wears your skin down. Each night and morning I put on the hand cream and it gives them new life! I have been spraying the Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense Deluxe Edition on my face throughout the day as I work. It is the perfect refresher on my skin and gives me that little wake-up call when I am starting to get sluggish.View more of Paige’s work on her Instagram and website.

We all know what face masks are. Slathering your face is one is a top-tier self-care moment. But why limit ourselves to applying just one when we can prolong that luxurious feeling while also combating different skin concerns by multi-masking?What is multi-masking?More often than not, your skin is doing different things in different areas. You could have oiliness in your t-zone, dehydration in your cheek area and dull skin everywhere else. Multi-masking is exactly as it sounds, it’s using different face masks in different areas of your face at the same time to target those specific concerns.Mask 1: Congested SkinUsually when your skin is congested, it tends to look tired and dull. You’ll find this happens around the t-zone area (forehead, nose and chin). Apply a mask that has a clay ingredient to that area. Our National Education Specialist, Lindsay Adam, says that Green Clay “assists with clearing out the skin of any impurities and breakouts in the t-zone area”. We recommend using our Intense Recovery Mask which is formulated with a base of naturally sourced Green Clay that absorbs impurities and rebalances. It also includes a blend of our farm grown botanical extracts, including Rose Gallica and Chamomile to help restore radiance to your skin once it has been decongested.Mask 2: Sensitive SkinSoothe any redness or irritation on your cheeks with a calming mask. If you have dry or sensitive cheeks, the last thing you’ll want to do is apply something that dries that area out. Our Nurturing Mask will do the trick! Enriched with nourishing plant-based oils including Shea Butter and Jojoba Seed Oil any signs of redness will be reduced leaving your skin feeling soothed and comforted.Mask 3: HydrationPlump and hydrated skin is always the goal. Once you’ve applied and rinsed off your purifying mask in your t-zone and calming mask on your cheeks, you’ll want to bring back moisture to your skin - something your skin will drink up right away. Apply our Rose Moisture Plus Moisturising Cream Mask to your entire face as an intensive overnight treatment. Made with Rose Oil and Shea Butter, it’ll help address visible signs of dehydration, brighten your skin and improve its overall texture. You’ll wake up with more supple and firm looking skin.Hot Tips:If you can’t hop into the shower to rinse off the masks, Lindsay recommends using a wet facial cloth. You know what your skin’s concerns are best, so before you multi-mask, take the time to figure out what each area really needs before applying. You don’t want to apply an astringent mask to your cheeks if they’re sensitive as it’ll exacerbate the problem. Same with applying hydrating products over congested skin – it’ll only make it worse.Don’t neglect your neck and the sides of our mouth. Apply your hydrating mask to this area fill out any lines and creases.Find multi-masking daunting? You can start with the basic and learn the benefits of using a face mask here.

With a build-up of dirt throughout the day as well as exposure to pollution and daily aggressors, night time is probably the most important time to look after your skin. Skin repairs overnight - during sleep your skin’s circulation and blood flow increases and it will rebuild collagen and renew itself as much as possible - so it’s important to add hardworking products to your evening routine. For the best results, use products that are tailored to your skin concern - that way, you can give your skin the best chance to repair and rejuvenate while you sleep. Discover our nighttime skin care steps for every skin type below. Why you should use different skin care products at night Skin care isn’t one size fits all, and the same goes for using products for daytime vs nighttime. Our Victorian State Manager, Charlotte Lyon, says: “During the day our ritual is all about preparing for the day ahead and protecting our skin against moisture loss and environmental aggressors. Whereas at night it is all about recovering the skin from the day past and harnessing the power of natural botanicals to treat skin concerns and boost radiance in the skin. Double cleansing is a must at night and ensuring that you use serums and moisturisers that focus on optimal absorption to the skin, without creating too much of a barrier.” How to look after your skin at night 1. Cleanse Your skin goes through a lot during the day (makeup, sweat, pollution…the list is endless), so night time is the perfect time to give your face a deep clean. We recommend double cleansing for the best results. Start your night face routine with a nourishing cleansing oil or micellar water to remove makeup (if you wear it), excess oil, and impurities that may have settled throughout the day. Follow up with a water-based face cleanser to thoroughly cleanse and refresh your skin. 2. Apply a serum Thanks to their lightweight formulas that target specific skin care concerns, serums are an essential part of every ritual, plus they give your skin a much-needed boost of hydration. Our soothing, hydrating and anti-ageing face serums harness the power of farm-grown botanical extracts to help you achieve smoother, more radiant and even-toned skin. 3. Moisturise Moisturisers lock in hydration and act as a protective layer on your skin. At night, use a richer formula than you would during the day, that will nourish your skin while you sleep. Our botanical-infused restorative night creams are just the ticket to visibly smoother, glowing skin in the morning. 4. Apply an eye cream Give your eyes a little extra TLC before bed. The skin around the eyes is delicate and prone to dryness. It’s also one of the first areas to show signs of ageing, so a nourishing eye cream or gel is important. What products to use for your skin concern Focus on rich, nourishing formulas and targeted treatments. The first step is identifying your skin type: do you have normal, dry, oily or combination skin? If you’re not sure, read our guide to understanding your skin type, then choose specially formulated products that address your skin care concerns too (is your dry skin congested? Or is anti-ageing a big concern alongside oiliness?) Anti-ageing Skin with visible signs of ageing needs specially-formulated products that that work to help support collagen and elastin, which gives skin its flexibility. which gives skin its flexibility. For an anti-ageing skin care routine, or to combat the signs of fine lines and wrinkles, we recommend using Nutri-Define Supreme Cleansing Foam, Activating Water Essence+ and Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum, followed by Nutri-Define Supreme Restorative Rich Cream, which is our best night cream for ageing skin. Our Education Manager Charlotte says “as a booster during the week, or for particularly parched skin, add 1-2 drops of the Purely Age Defying Firming Face Oil to your moisturiser to help with elasticity and suppleness. Don’t forget to extend Serums/Creams/Oils to face, neck and décolletage.” Dry skin and hydration Dry skin can look dull and feel tight, dehydrated and rough to touch, so needs skin care products that will lock in hydration. Double cleanse skin first with either Replenishing Cleansing Lotion or Nourishing Cleansing Oil. Gently lift away dead skin build up using our iconic Daily Exfoliating Cream, by pressing this Honey, Oat and Tahini cream into skin in a press and release motion. By gently sloughing away dead, flaky skin that typically builds up when skin is dry, you will find you have better absorption of your hydration and treatment products. Follow with our Activating Water Essence+, which is a great hydration booster for skin, and Rare Rose Serum and Cream, which have been clinically proven* to provide 24 hour hydration. *Clinical evaluation of 22 people, measured 24 hours after a single application. Sensitivity Sensitive skin is easily irritated and prone to drying. It’s important to use specially formulated products that restore the skin’s moisture barrier and calm and rebalance skin. Thoroughly remove the day using Replenishing Cleansing Lotion twice. The double cleanse will ensure any oils, bacteria or impurities that could exacerbate skin irritation - ensure to use lukewarm or tepid water. We recommend using our Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Moisturising Cream, Calendula Redness Rescue Restorative Treatment Serum and Nurturing Mask to look after your skin at night. Oil and blemish control If oiliness and blemishes are your biggest concern, treat your skin to our Revitalising Cleansing Gel, which cleanses makeup, oil and impurities in one single step. Charlotte recommends misting with “Sweet Violet & Grapefruit Mist for immediate moisture and then use Activating Water Essence+ for continuous hydration. The lightweight, water-packed formulation is well loved by oily skin.” For a moisturiser, opt for our Rare Rose Lotion, which is lightweight and non-comedogenic, and use our Purity Specialist Treatment Mask once or twice a week before bed to rebalance oiliness. Puffiness and dark circles Our Nutri-Define Supreme Eye Contour Balm is our best eye cream for lines and puffiness. It uses Snowflake Bulb extract to help restore luminosity, while Alfalfa seed and lupine protein target the appearance of under-eye puffiness. Apply with the metal ball applicator included with the Eye Contour Balm, which helps to smooth, cool and depuff the eye area promoting optimal absorption of the eye balm itself. FAQs What should a night skin care routine be? A simple night skin care routine should start with a double cleanse to thoroughly remove the day's impurities. Next, apply a serum tailored to your skin's concerns, followed by a rich night cream to hydrate and replenish your skin while you sleep. Gently pat on an eye cream around your delicate eye area to minimise dark circles and puffiness, and finish by applying a nourishing lip balm or treatment for soft, supple lips. What is good to apply on the face at night? At night, your skin shifts into repair mode, and this peaks while you sleep. Nighttime is the best time to address specific skin concerns like dullness, blemishes, dark circles or those elusive fine lines with targeted treatments. Follow with a rich, nourishing moisturiser to lock in maximum hydration. Remember to apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency for optimal absorption. What is the best serum for a night skincare routine? Our Herbal Recovery Bi-Phase Serum is a best-seller for a reason. Infused with holy basil, known as the “elixir of life", Iris root, Echinacea, Black Elderflower and potent antioxidants, this high-performing blend re-energises the skin for a smoother, softer and revitalised look. Collagen is a word that’s often associated with the holy grail of youthful-looking skin. It can be found in powders, pills and liquid supplements, all with the promise of keeping your skin looking and feeling its best. We’ve all heard of it and no doubt dropped it into conversation…but what is it, what does collagen do and more importantly, do we actually need it? We break down everything you need to know about this beauty buzzword. What is collagen?Collagen is the most common protein that’s found in the body. The word comes from the Greek word kólla which means glue and that’s essentially what collagen is: the ‘glue’ that holds our bones, skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments together. There are at least 28 different types of collagen found around the body. What are the benefits of collagen for skin? The type of collagen that helps us to look youthful is found in the middle layer of the skin. Together with elastin, it strengthens the skin and promotes elasticity, helping it look and feel plump, and prevent it from sagging. Collagen can also reduce dryness in the skin, helping it stay hydrated and give it that glow we all covet. At what age do we start losing collagen? As we reach the age of 20, our bodies start to produce less and less, and collagen is broken down faster than you can make it. In fact, by the time we’ve reached our 40s, we’ve lost approximately 30 per cent of our collagen supply, which is partly the reason we see lines and wrinkles in the skin. But aside from the natural degradation of collagen, there are certain lifestyle habits that can damage it and speed up the process of ageing, such as eating a lot of sugar and refined carbohydrates, too much exposure to the sun and its harmful UV rays, and smoking. How to increase collagenThe good news is that although our skin naturally loses collagen, there are ways we can help increase collagen production through eating nutrient-rich leafy greens and vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower that have high levels of Vitamin C and Sulphur – both of which are essential for collagen production. Skin care products designed to boost collagen help too: our Nutri-Define range contains farm-grown Spilanthes Flower and Horseradish Root extracts that naturally promote collagen production in the skin.Read our guide to increasing collagen naturally for more top tips and shop our full Nutri-Define range for collagen boosting skin care.
Read moreWHEN SHOULD I START USING ANTI-AGEING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS?
It’s a question that seems to confuse a lot of us: when should you start using anti-ageing products? In your early 20s, before any visible signs of ageing? At 30 or 40? Are there different anti-ageing products you should be using at different life stages? And what are the best anti-ageing treatments? While at Jurlique we believe that every age is beautiful, we also believe in the power that looking after and nourishing your skin can bring. So, we’re here to get rid of the confusion. Read on to find out when and how to start using anti-ageing skin care. When should I start using anti-ageing skin care?In short, it’s never too early. Like with most things, our best anti-ageing tip is that prevention is better than cure, so the earlier you start incorporating targeted anti-ageing skin care into your ritual, the better. Your early 20s is the best time to start, as it will slow down those visible signs of ageing from appearing. But don’t worry if you’re past your early 20s and have yet to use an anti-ageing product – you can still reap the benefits and notice the difference at every age.Which product should I start with? For first signs of ageing: If you're looking to slowly incorporate anti-ageing skin care into your daily ritual, start with the Herbal Recovery Signature Serum and Herbal Recovery Signature Moisturising Lotion or Herbal Recovery Signature Moisturising Cream. With Powerful botanicals and natural-based antioxidants, these products will help to smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles. For visible signs of ageing: If your skin needs deeper hydration and repair, pair the Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum with the Nutri-Define Supreme Restorative Light Cream, and apply the Nutri-Define Supreme Eye Contour Balm to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. For advanced signs of ageing: If you’re already using a serum, night cream and eye cream, try incorporating the Nutri-Define Supreme Cleansing Foam and switching the Light Cream for the Nutri-Define Supreme Restorative Rich Cream to deliver intense hydration.Choose natural anti-ageing ingredientsIf you’ve been a long-time user of Jurlique, you’ll know we value the potent botanicals grown on our biodynamic* farm in South Australia and believe that nature is our greatest source of skin-loving ingredients. Our Nutri-Define range includes natural ingredients such as an extract from the Spilanthes flower, which has been shown to boost the production of Collagen VII and Collagen I, two essential anti-ageing proteins, by up to 46%**. The essential protein that keeps our complexion bouncy, collagen is the scaffolding our skin needs to stay plump1. Like most super structures, collagen breaks down over time and as we age production slows2. And while smoking and ultraviolet radiation are two of collagen’s greatest enemies3,4, we can harness natural collagen boosters to restore a plump, youthful appearance. TYPES OF COLLAGEN Of the many types of collagen, there are two essential for skin maintenance1: Collagen VII supports stability and Collagen I’s densely packed fibres, provide structure. Essentially, their job is to provide strength and enable the skin to withstand stretching1. As collagen production slows with age, skin may feel less firm and robust. COLLAGEN AND SKIN HYDRATION Water is a large percentage of collagen’s weight1,5, it’s important to stay well hydrated and substitute the cup of coffee with a glass of water. Choosing a topical product that stimulates collagen production may improve skin elasticity and hydration, to help address advanced signs of skin ageing such as deep lines and wrinkles. THE COLLAGEN NUTRIENTS Eating foods that build collagen or boost collagen production may also help promote a supple complexion6. Collagen is a protein and is made up of building blocks called amino-acids. Specifically, collagen is made up of four amino acids (lysine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine) and also requires other nutrients as precursors to its production1. Eating a diet that is rich in a variety of proteins, as a source of amino acids, and vitamin C, an essential co-factor in collagen production7, may therefore help your body’s own collagen production8. In addition, natural sources of vitamin E, such as sunflower seeds, almonds and wheatgerm oil, may help to reduce collagen breakdown. Foods such as avocadoes, spinach and butternut squash are a source of both vitamin C and vitamin E. COMPLEXION SELF-CARE Daily stimulation of the skin may help promote collagen production9. Using a facial massage roller with your favourite serum or oil, work the roller over your face, neck and decolletage for 3-5 minutes. Read moreMENOPAUSE AND COLLAGEN PRODUCTION
Responsible for skin firmness and skin elasticity, collagen is the protein that holds our complexion in high regard. But in menopause, skin quickly loses collagen1. As estrogen drops, so too does skin’s collagen production2. COLLAGEN AND THE SKIN Collagen and elastin are the scaffolding in skin3 that keeps it youthful, taut and voluminous. While collagen does decrease gradually with age, the rate is more dramatic in the first five years of menopause4. Continuing to decline for the next 20 years, skin begins to lose its firmness, sag, with wrinkles and jowls more prominent2. MENOPAUSE AND THE SKIN Skin collagen is directly influenced by estrogen loss with approximately 30% of skin collagen lost in the first 5 years after menopause5. As a result of these hormonal changes, skin loses strength and elasticity1. Changes may be seen in the under-eye area; skin may feel thinner and pores may largen. HOW TO INCREASE COLLAGEN NATURALLY As water is a large percentage of collagen’s weight3, it’s important to stay well hydrated6. Eating a diet rich in a variety of proteins and vitamin C, an essential co-factor in collagen production, may support your body’s own collagen production7, 8. And using a daily SPF can also protect the breakdown of existing collagen in your skin9. FACIAL MASSAGE TO BOOST COLLAGEN A nightly facial massage ritual at home. Begin with a neck and shoulder massage to relieve sore muscles. Warm 1-2 pumps of your favourite serum or oil between fingertips, then gently press and smooth evenly onto face, neck and décolletage. Use a warm rose quartz crystal massage roller to help restore firmness to your skin. Follow with a cool jade massage roller to relieve hot flushes and leave skin in a state of calm.
