HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN IN SUMMER
There’s nothing quite like summer. Days are endless, the sun seems to make everything better and it’s almost a given that you completely switch off and do nothing but enjoy the warmer weather for a few months. But as happy as we are to pack our coats away for the season, summer can wreak havoc on your skin if you don’t look after it properly. UVA/UVB rays are at their peak during the summer months, and the humidity and hot weather can stimulate your sebaceous glands and leave you with clogged pores – not the easy, low-maintenance summer beauty we all have in mind. To make sure you have the best skin possible this summer and discover our glowing skin care tips below. SIX TIPS FOR SUMMER-READY SKIN1. WEAR SUNSCREENBaz Lurhmann was right when he told everyone to ‘wear sunscreen’. Sunscreens act as a daily shield against harmful UV rays which penetrate your skin when exposed to the sun, as well as help prevent your skin from developing fine lines and wrinkles. Avoid sun damaged skin by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily (even if it’s cloudy) and reapply every two-three hours. 2. APPLY AN ANTIOXIDANT SERUMIf you’re not already using one, apply an antioxidant serum to your morning skin care routine. Look for one that contains vitamins C and E, which help to neutralise free radicals and strengthen and protect the skin. Try our Herbal Recovery Signature Serum and start adding antioxidant-rich foods to your diet, such as tomatoes, capsicum and strawberries. Woman touching face with hands 3. EXFOLIATEThanks to sweat and sunscreen, your pores can get clogged easily during summer, so it’s important to gently exfoliate two-three times a week. Our Daily Exfoliating Cream gently lifts and removes dead surface skin and impurities, leaving it feeling soft, smooth and polished. 4. DOUBLE CLEANSEOn those nights you’re not exfoliating, go for a double cleanse. The first cleanse will remove oil, sweat, sunscreen and make up, while the second cleanse will deep clean your pores. Try our Nourishing Cleansing Oil, it’s a great hydrating cleanser for dry skin, and leaves your skin feeling softer and smoother. 5. SWITCH TO A LIGHTER MOISTURISERA moisturiser is important every time of year but while you may reach for those richer creams in winter to help nourish dry skin, they can feel too heavy come summer. Opt for a lightweight moisturiser instead, like our Herbal Recovery Signature Moisturising Lotion, that absorbs quickly and easily into the skin while still leaving you feeling hydrated and protected. A face mist will help to top up your hydration levels throughout the day too, plus they can be a welcome refresher once the temperatures rise. Try keeping a bottle of our Rosewater Balancing Mist or Lavender Hydrating Mist in your bag for easy use.

It’s a question that seems to confuse a lot of us: when should you start using anti-ageing products? In your early 20s, before any visible signs of ageing? At 30 or 40? Like with most things, our best anti-ageing tip is that prevention is better than cure, so the earlier you start incorporating targeted anti-ageing skin care into your ritual, the better. Your early 20s is the best time to start, as it will slow down those visible signs of ageing from appearing. Face scrubs make up an important part of a lot of people’s skin care rituals, thanks to their ability to revitalise the skin, restore your natural glow and help fight signs of ageing. But is a body exfoliator also part of your routine? Just like face scrubs, a good body scrub can help you achieve smooth, even skin and reveal your best skin yet (perfect for summer when you’re showing a little more skin – and winter, when your body is probably in need of a bit more TLC). Read on for everything you need to know about exfoliation and how to choose the best body scrub for glowing skin (if you’re curious about face exfoliators, read our go-to guide here). 5 benefits of body exfoliation 1. Reveals radiant skin Just like we have dead surface skin cells on our face, the same goes for our body. Exfoliation thoroughly clears away those dead surface skin cells, revealing that refreshed, radiant and smooth skin underneath. 2. Smooths bumpy skin Ever notice your skin feeling a bit bumpy? Exfoliating regularly helps smooth bumpy skin and clean out impurities – as well as help reduce the appearance of dark spots. 3. Boosts circulation The best way to exfoliate your body is by using a circular action and applying light pressure. This can help to boost circulation as you increase the blood flow to the skin’s surface. This also promotes skin cell regeneration. 4. Helps hydrate skin When dead surface skin cells are left to build up, it can cause your skin to become dry, and your body lotions and creams will have to work harder to penetrate the layers of the skin they’re trying to reach. By exfoliating and sloughing those dead surface skin cells away, your body care has a better chance of absorbing into the skin fully. 5. Relaxes the body and mind Our skin is our body’s largest organ, so it should be given as much care and attention as we give to our internal health. Using a body scrub in the shower means you’ll be giving your body a gentle massage and is a great excuse for some quality ‘me time’ (not that we think you ever need an excuse…). How to use a body scrub It’s best to leave your skin to soften in a lukewarm shower for a few minutes before applying your scrub. Gently massage the scrub into your skin in circular motions (be careful not to scrub too hard as this could irritate the skin) and focus on areas where your skin is driest. Rinse thoroughly and follow with a hydrating lotion or oil such as our Softening Body Lotion Rose or Rose Body Oil. How many times should you exfoliate your body? Exfoliating frequency depends on your skin type. Those with sensitive and dry skin will benefit from using a body scrub once a week, while those with oilier skin might benefit from exfoliating three times a week. Start off using one once a week and building up your frequency over time, if you wish. How to choose a body scrub For the best results, choose a natural body scrub made with ingredients that will gently remove dead surface skin cells without irritating the skin. Our Smoothing Body Exfoliating Gel contains Walnut Shell powder to gently but thoroughly lift away dead surface skin cells and impurities, as well as hydrating Rosa gallica flower extract and herbal antioxidants to leave the skin feeling cleansed, soft, smooth and more radiant. Body exfoliation is an essential step to achieve smooth, glowing skin. Explore our range of Body products now, or visit our blog for more skin care and body care tips.

Stress is a fact of life and we all encounter stressful situations at various points of our lives, but this year has brought new and unique stresses to everyone. It can have long term effects on our minds, bodies and skin, and sometimes finding something that ‘works’ is easier said than done. Enter aromatherapy, a natural and oft-cited way to help reduce stress. From what essential oils to use to help relieve stress to how to use them, discover our guide to relaxing aromatherapy below. How stress affects skinYou may notice that your skin doesn’t look its best when you’re stressed. Perhaps you’re breaking out more than usual, or pre-existing conditions such as eczema and psoriasis are worse than they have been in a while. This is because stress can cause a chemical response in your body that may make skin more sensitive.Stress can also lead to your body making more hormones like cortisol, which may cause the glands in your skin to produce oil…which could lead to breakouts. On top of that, you might be neglecting your skin care ritual as your mind is on other things. What is aromatherapy?Aromatherapy has been used as a holistic wellbeing tool for years, with even the Ancient Egyptians known for using different scents to alter their mood. Aromatherapy involves the use of aromatic plant materials, particularly essential oils, to alter one’s mood and promote wellbeing. Its primary benefits come from inhaling the scent of these essential oils, which can have benefits for the mind and body.Essential oils for stressLavender Pure Essential OilLavender essential oil has a calming, relaxing and balancing effect and is probably one of the best-known essential oils. In fact, one study found that spraying lavender spray on clothing was effective in reducing work related stress in nurses for three-four days.Bergamot Essential OilBergamot essential oil is also known for its calming and balancing effects. The oil comes from the peel of a fruit called Citrus bergamia and according to one study, it may improve negative emotions, reduce fatigue and help lower cortisol levels.Geranium Pure Essential OilGeranium essential oil is also known for being calming and relaxing when used in aromatherapy.Or try one of our relaxing essential oil blends such as Comforting Blend Essential Oil and Harmony Blend Essential Oil.How to do an aromatherapy massageCreate your own aromatherapy massage oil by mixing Jojoba Carrier Oil and your essential oil of choice for a calming, indulgent way to relax – try using it when you treat yourself to your next at-home spa day.Other ways to use essential oils include pouring a couple of drops into your bath or diffuser or inhaling it by adding a couple of drops to a tissue. If you’re looking for more stress relief techniques, try these 7 yoga poses to relieve stress. Read moreWHY PRESSING IN YOUR SKIN CARE WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
When it comes to an effective skin care ritual, having the right products in your line-up is only half of it. The method of application also plays a big part, as it can affect the overall efficacy of your products. Avoiding excessively rubbing your skin and instead pressing in your product, which also makes them more effective and dramatically improves the condition of your skin. What is pressing/patting? Patting in your skin care products is a centuries old Japanese technique – a traditional ritual in which skin care products are gently patted or pressed onto the surface of the skin rather than tugging or rubbing. To use the pressing method simply: Apply a small amount of product to clean finger tips of one hand Gently rub both of your hands together to evenly distribute the product and as well as warm up the product Starting at your nose and working outwards gently press your product into your face. Press the product into your oiliest areas, like your T-Zone, last. Also gently press the product into your neck and décolletage until fully absorbed. Patting vs rubbing in skin care products One of the main benefits of pressing in your skin care products is that it significantly reduces pulling and tugging of skin. Our skin is one of our body’s most delicate organs and without realising it, excessive skin manipulation by rubbing can stretch the skin and break down collagen, in turn leading to advanced signs of ageing like sagging and wrinkles. From the vigorous use of makeup wipes to being heavy handed when applying moisturiser, all of that rubbing adds up. Pressing in your skin care products also allows the products to penetrate deeper without friction. Particularly around the area where rubbing in products and dragging the skin can cause irritation and inflammation. When should you press in your skin care products? Physical exfoliators and cleansers are the only products that should be rubbed into your face using gentle, circular motions: this motion helps activate the product and whisks away debris. For most of your skin care ritual steps you should practice pressing in your products. Misting/Essence: After cleansing your skin, use a toner or essence to restore hydration. Our Activating Water Essence is the essential step for every skin care ritual and is formulated to activate the skin’s ability to retain water and thus maximises the benefits of the products you apply afterwards. “Your skin is like a sponge, anything you put on top of a dry sponge will just sit there”, says Rebecca Nicholls, Jurlique Education Specialist. To enhance absorption, pour a couple of drops into your hand, gently rub your hands together to warm up the product and gently pat onto your face, neck and décolletage. Serum: Serums are a high-performance treatment step and usually packed with all the good stuff that helps improve your complexion. By pressing in your serum instead of rubbing, you’ll ensure that every juicy drop gets absorbed into your skin. Eye Cream: Your eye area is quite delicate so pulling and tugging is already a big no-no. Instead of patting with all of your fingers, use the tips of your ring fingers and gently take your time to pat the product under the eye area in until full absorbed. Moisturiser: When moisturising you can use the same patting technique as you would with your serum and essence step. But as a final technique you can also glide and smooth the moisturiser onto your skin. Moving from the middle of your face outward and using upward gliding motion on your neck and décolletage. Remember to be gentle and avoid any rubbing motion. A circular rubbing motion is mostly our default option when it comes applying skin care products. Even though it feels like it gets the job faster and we’ve been doing it this way since forever, the bottom line is that it’s not that great for our skin. When applying your skin care remember to try and take a mindful moment and really treat it like the luxurious ritual it is. Take your time as your press in your products. Your skin will thank you for it.

This Lunar New Year, Jurlique is thrilled to partner with a multidisciplinary artist who embodies our philosophy of working in harmony with nature. Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Raku Inoue uses various methods and techniques to create works featuring organic materials like flowers, leaves and stems of various flora species1 – many of which are gathered in his back garden2. Inspired by the same botanical beauty as Jurlique, he feels a strong connection to nature, a sense of belonging, of peace and happiness2. Raku performs a special role, in connecting art and nature he works in harmony with his surrounds. He understands the process of creation and the cycle of life, and tells the story of a dragonfly that, when he was a child, would visit his grandmother. "From time to time, a dragonfly would fly into the living room, and my grandmother would always say it was her late husband reincarnated paying a visit. As a young kid, I was told everything eventually returns to nature. So evidently, his visits were symbolic and had a great influence on how I live today. As my grandmother would say, life is precious, during and even in the afterlife and through nature, we get to see this every day2" Nature has taught Raku about love and appreciation. He understands the importance to which organic materials must be treated with care and respect – giving his projects back to the soil once completed so the cycle of life can continue2. It is these sentiments that Jurlique shares with Raku. From our certified biodynamic* farming methods to our support of a healthy ecosystem that contributes to each of our products, we each work to awaken the life force of nature. Experimenting with different concepts, Raku first assembled Jurlique’s botanical ingredients into a form of tapestry inspired by pollinating species found on flower farms2. Refining his ideas, Raku has taken inspiration from rose varieties, grown on our farm in South Australia, to create exquisite patterns exclusively for the Lunar New Year edition of our Jurlique Body Oil. Raku’s patterns of light and delicate shapes are not only a devotion to nature’s craft but to the Rosa gallica extract in our Exclusive Edition Rose Body Oil that has been planted, handpicked and extracted with uncompromising care. *Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Read moreTHE IMPORTANCE OF SKIN COLLAGEN
The essential protein that keeps our complexion bouncy, collagen is the scaffolding our skin needs to stay plump1. Like most super structures, collagen breaks down over time and as we age production slows2. And while smoking and ultraviolet radiation are two of collagen’s greatest enemies3,4, we can harness natural collagen boosters to restore a plump, youthful appearance. TYPES OF COLLAGEN Of the many types of collagen, there are two essential for skin maintenance1: Collagen VII supports stability and Collagen I’s densely packed fibres, provide structure. Essentially, their job is to provide strength and enable the skin to withstand stretching1. As collagen production slows with age, skin may feel less firm and robust. COLLAGEN AND SKIN HYDRATION Water is a large percentage of collagen’s weight1,5, it’s important to stay well hydrated and substitute the cup of coffee with a glass of water. Choosing a topical product that stimulates collagen production may improve skin elasticity and hydration, to help address advanced signs of skin ageing such as deep lines and wrinkles. THE COLLAGEN NUTRIENTS Eating foods that build collagen or boost collagen production may also help promote a supple complexion6. Collagen is a protein and is made up of building blocks called amino-acids. Specifically, collagen is made up of four amino acids (lysine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine) and also requires other nutrients as precursors to its production1. Eating a diet that is rich in a variety of proteins, as a source of amino acids, and vitamin C, an essential co-factor in collagen production7, may therefore help your body’s own collagen production8. In addition, natural sources of vitamin E, such as sunflower seeds, almonds and wheatgerm oil, may help to reduce collagen breakdown. Foods such as avocadoes, spinach and butternut squash are a source of both vitamin C and vitamin E. COMPLEXION SELF-CARE Daily stimulation of the skin may help promote collagen production9. Using a facial massage roller with your favourite serum or oil, work the roller over your face, neck and decolletage for 3-5 minutes.
