SUNDAY LANE’S CAITLYN EVERETT ON HER CREATIVE PROCESS - Jurlique US

SUNDAY LANE’S CAITLYN EVERETT ON HER CREATIVE PROCESS

Author, illustrator and creative Caitlyn Everett is the brains behind Sunday Lane, a small Brisbane-based business that inspires us daily with its modern, whimsical zodiac illustrations and verses. In celebration of our latest Adriana Picker-designed limited-edition products – Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense Deluxe Edition and Jurlique Rose Luxe Edition Hand Cream – we spoke to Caitlyn about her own creative process and how she incorporates the products into her own daily routine.Tell us about your work and what you do?I am the owner of Sunday Lane, a store and studio that centres on modern-day poetry, or affirmation and inspired gifting. We are best known for our zodiac collection, a blend of verses of powerful musings and illustration. I am the dreamer behind the brand, an author, illustrator, creative. How did you get into this position?I was working full time for a beautiful small business, and I mean, I was working myself into the ground. I gave everything I had into my work and I honestly wasn't really looking or searching for more. Sunday Lane was born by chance, a personal project turned business idea and it wasn't until it began taking off that I became discontent. I feel like I got a taste of life as my own boss and I worked really hard at it before I felt like I could back myself and quit my job.Woman’s hand resting on magazine next to tube of Jurlique hand creamDescribe your process when it comes to your work - how do you tackle a new project?Every project I've worked on has been such a learning process for me. In the beginning it was all energy and excitement and I would work 18-hour days to get new designs out but having my son, Morgan has helped me slow down. I am also more aware of my brand, who we are and where we are heading now. Our most recent project, the Zodiac 03 collection, was months of planning and research, of illustrating and writing. We also brought on a local press studio, so we really had to accept and embrace the beauty of handmade. It was such a blessing to work with such a knowledgeable and talented artist on an artform completely out of my comfort zone. What challenges do you face in your work?My biggest challenge has been defining and enforcing a work/life balance. The reality of being a small business is that we are almost always working, in store, at home, at night and on weekends. It is very hard to switch off and part of me doesn't want to. It is my passion and I love to pour myself into my work. Having a young family has made me want to be able to switch off more. When you're experiencing a creative block, how do you get out of it?To get away from my screen and remove myself from the overstimulation of the online world. It is so easy to get caught up in it all. It's a never-ending rabbit hole.In my worst hours, or days of creative block the only thing that has helped is time, and moments away from work. My biggest lesson is that creativity comes in waves and it cannot be forced. If I trust the process, the magic will follow.Tube of Jurlique hand cream on plate next to gold rings What advice would you give to others who are looking to explore their creativity?Trust your gut and be prepared to put in the work.I dropped out of teaching to study interior design at college and in a roundabout way it got me to where I am today. If I hadn't taken the gigantic leap who knows where I would be. Of course, it is easier said than done and I was definitely someone that had a plan b. I think it is a little romantic to say I went into it with blind faith and just crossed my fingers it would work. I had a home and a family I needed to support. I worked really hard to make it my reality.Talk us through how you use your Jurlique products throughout your day?Everyone who knows me knows I am terrible with my skin care routine. Jurlique has been an absolute blessing and I've actually been carrying these products with me every day between our studio and the store. The Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense Deluxe Edition is such a low maintenance solution for someone who is time poor and both of these beauties have really helped bring me back to life after long nights preparing our new collections. They are the perfect addition to my very short morning and night routine.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO MEDITATION - Jurlique US

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO MEDITATION

Are you interested in meditation but don’t know where to begin? You may have heard people waxing lyrical about the practice and want to explore it for yourself, or maybe you’re intrigued to know what all the fuss is about. It can be difficult to get your head around when you first start out though – should I be thinking? What is it supposed to feel like? And how do you know if you are, in fact, meditating? The trick is to not overthink it but take it day by day and find what works for you. WHAT IS MEDITATION?Meditation is the practice of training your mind to focus and redirect your thoughts. It won’t stop the mind from thinking entirely but its purpose is to allow thoughts to come and go and teach you to observe thoughts without judgement or bias. It’s an age-old practice used to increase awareness, reduce stress and promote a positive outlook on life. BENEFITS OF MEDITATIONMeditation isn’t just a new-age fad. Countless studies have shown that meditation can help to reduce stress, improve emotional health, enhance self-awareness (understanding yourself better, enabling you to become the best version of yourself), help us to focus for longer and improve sleep. Incense sticks burning HOW TO MEDITATE1. Have a clear intention. If you don’t know why you’re meditating it will be hard to focus. Do you want to feel happier, calmer, more focused, less stressed? Setting an intention will help create the right attitude before you start.2. Find a comfortable seated position. This helps us to feel grounded and not get distracted by movement or feelings of discomfort. Try sitting cross-legged on the floor or on a chair with feet firmly on the floor, hands in lap.3. Keep your back straight. A lot of us tend to slump when we sit but keeping your spine straight and engaged can help us focus and stay aware. Try rolling your shoulders back before you begin.4. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Closing your eyes will help you to stop from being distracted by other objects in the room and by focusing on your breath coming in and out, our minds have something other than our thoughts to concentrate on.5. Start small. It’s not often that we sit still with nothing distracting us, so meditating can be hard when you first begin. Start with a five or 10-minute meditation and gradually build up to 15, 20 minutes or longer.6. Try a guided meditation. If you’re struggling to meditate on your own, try a meditation app like Headspace or Calm that will guide you through the process. Woman kneeling on floor in a treehouse Another way to help with meditation is to create a calming environment. Try diffusing our Tranquil Blend Essential Oil before you begin, to calm the mind and body and shop our full range of aromatherapy here.

HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF A DIY AT-HOME FACIAL - Jurlique US

HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF A DIY AT-HOME FACIAL

Facials are usually seen as next-level self-care treats because it’s not every day you get to enjoy the decadence of going to a spa — relaxing in a steam room, having a professional esthetician work magic on your skin and even indulging in a (beauty sleep-inducing) full-body massage. It’s that one time where you purposefully block out some time for yourself to relax, unwind and rejuvenate. But why not extend the feeling in between your spa visits with a DIY at-home facial? Here’s our step-by-step guide to DIY at-home facials. What is a facial? A facial is a skin-refining treatment typically given by a skin care specialist. Depending on the skin’s needs, facials often include steaming, cleansing, exfoliating, hydrating, correcting and pampering the skin. Adding a weekly DIY facial to your regular face skincare routine can help supercharge your routine and get you closer to achieving a clarified, glowing complexion. How to do a facial at home step-by-step Indulge in the luxury of a spa-like experience from the comfort of your space with our step-by-step home facial for glowing skin. Grab your softest robe and a hair towel (if you have one), sit back and prepare for some pampering bliss. Step 1: Set the mood The vibe matters. How are you going to feel relaxed if your space isn’t making you feel calm? You can replicate those spa components by turning off the lights in your bathroom and lighting a few candles to invite some warm and cosy energy. Turn on some music that makes you feel tranquil, maybe some Sade or Enya? It’s important for your space to have the right scents too. Add a few drops of essential oil into a diffuser or bath — try our Harmony Blend Essential Oil with Lavender, Clary Sage and Geranium to promote a sense of balance. If you’re going to add an essential oil to your bath, be sure to combine it with a carrier oil like jojoba to protect your skin. And there you have it; you’ve created a spa sanctuary, and we haven’t even gotten to the facial step yet. Step 2: Steam your skin Steaming your skin does wonders for softening your pores and loosening all that buildup in your skin. No sauna, no worries — immerse a face cloth into warm water and squeeze out the excess moisture before compressing the warm damp cloth over your face and neck. Add our Chamomile-Rose Hydrating Essence to water to help refresh your skin and uplift the senses. As you press the warm cloth to your face, take a mindful moment to relax and enjoy the aroma. Step 3: Cleanse Jurlique USA National Education Manager Paula Provenzano recommends double cleansing. The first cleanse thoroughly dissolves surface impurities such as dirt, oil and makeup, while the second cleanse “makes sure that you get every speck of dirt and makeup that may be on the surface of the skin,” says Paula. For the first cleanse, you’ll need an oil-based cleanser like our Nourishing Cleansing Oil. Massage the oil into dry skin with a circular motion, then emulsify with water and rinse. For the second cleanse, go in with your favourite cleansing gel, foam or lotion depending on your skin type. While you’re doing a double cleanse, it’s the perfect time to focus on those areas that maybe are a little neglected, Paula says. “The ears, the hairline, the neck (front and back) shoulders and décolleté.” Step 4: Exfoliate Exfoliation is always important when you’re doing an at-home facial because it helps remove dead surface cells, which stimulates cellular renewal and improves skin texture. “You want to get to the skin below so you can effectively treat it,” says Paula. Go for an exfoliant with a granular texture. Massage onto your now clean, damp skin and then rinse with warm water. Step 5: Mist Mists are proven hydration boosters that also provide a blissful aromatherapy-like experience. To soothe your senses before and after exfoliation, we recommend our Lavender Hydrating Mist. Not only will it refresh and restore that natural glow to your skin, but it will also calm your skin and soothe your senses. Hot tip: Store in the refrigerator during warmer months for a refreshing treat. Step 6: Massage Massaging the skin is optional but worth it if you want to get the circulation going in your skin. Massaging the skin relaxes facial muscles, reduces puffiness and helps the products penetrate. Using a jade roller, a gua sha tool or your hands, massage your skin from the centre of your face to the perimeter, around to the hairline and down to the ears and neck. “By doing that, you’re working with the natural flow of lymph, so if you have a little puffiness around the eye area, it will help to get rid of that,” says Paula. Step 7: Mask Paula says that masking is the centrepiece of facials. It offers intensive treatment for the skin and helps to address any skin problems from dryness, oiliness to irritation. You don’t have to pick only one mask either. You can multi-mask and apply specific masks to the areas that need it. Have sensitive skin on your cheeks? Apply a soothing mask to that area that’ll nurture and protect the skin. Is your skin looking dull and tired? A clay mask is perfect to help restore radiance and absorb impurities. Step 8: Moisturise To kick off the moisturising step, prime and condition your skin with our Activating Water Essence. It sets the stage for perfect penetration for all of your final treatment products, says Paula. Apply with a pressing and smoothing motion to prep the skin for serum. Your serum step always comes before eye cream and moisturiser and is a step you’d find during a professional facial. “It’s the real skin-correcting step that’s going to get in there and change and improve your skin,” says Paula. Finally, lock it all in with a moisturiser that works best for your skin type. Warm up the product in your hands to allow for smoother spreading, and remember to press in the moisturiser instead of rubbing it in. Transform homemade facial into a full spa experience After treating your skin to a rejuvenating spa facial at home, take a moment to pamper the rest of your body. Massage a nourishing eye care product, like our Herbal Recovery Eye Oil Roll-On, with a cooling ball applicator to awaken and nourish your delicate under-eye area. Your lips also deserve some TLC — apply a nourishing lip care product like our Rose Love Balm for soft, supple lips. Got time for even more “me time”? Treat yourself to pampering body care (if you didn’t already start with that). Try dry body brushing to exfoliate and stimulate blood flow. Then, follow with a soothing, oil-infused bath to calm your mind and soothe sore muscles. Finish with a rich body lotion or oil for soft, hydrated skin, not forgetting your hands and feet. Light a candle, pour some herbal tea or wine and sip away — you deserve it! For an extra boost, consider incorporating skin care tools like a jade roller or a gua sha tool in your face treatments at home. These can help relax facial muscles, reduce puffiness and help the products penetrate. FAQs How often should you get a facial? Skin care specialists recommend getting a facial every 4 weeks, but 5 to 6 is still great. Since your DIY facial home treatment doesn’t include extractions or invasive procedures, you can comfortably do one every week.  What are the 5 basic steps for a home facial? For a quick and easy at-home facial, start by steaming your face to open up your pores and soften any buildup in your skin. Follow with a double cleanse to remove dirt, oil and impurities. Then, gently exfoliate to remove dead surface cells and prep the skin for the next steps. Apply your favourite mask — whether a sheet mask, clay mask, gel mask, cream mask or peel-off mask. Finish with a moisturiser or facial oil and a soothing massage to relax your facial muscles and help the products soak in. What are the benefits of a home facial? A home facial offers plenty of benefits to your skin, including Clear skin — DIY facial steps often involve deep cleansing, which effectively removes any built-up oil, dirt or makeup that a daily cleanser may have missed.  Intense Hydration — Facials are a great way to flood your skin with moisture using essences, serums, nourishing masks and moisturisers.  Relaxation — Facial massages aren’t only relaxing and rejuvenating for the face but also the mind. Think of it as a mini-break to switch off and reconnect with your body in a deeply relaxed state. What not to do on a home facial? To prevent potential problems when having a home facial, avoid: DIY extractions — Yes, DIY extractions can be highly satisfying, but doing it wrong could lead to scarring or infection, so we recommend leaving this step to a professional. Using strong skincare products — If you’ve recently discovered a new product with ingredients you’ve never tried before, this may not be the best time to try it. Between steaming, double cleansing and exfoliating, your skin is already going through a lot.

WHERE HEALTHY SKIN MEETS A HAPPY MIND WITH JULIA BUSUTTIL NISHIMURA - Jurlique US

WHERE HEALTHY SKIN MEETS A HAPPY MIND WITH JULIA BUSUTTIL NISHIMURA

As pioneers in wellbeing, at Jurlique we’ve always believed that the healing and uplifting powers of Nature have a great part to play. The self-care phenomenon is more than a trend and here to stay so there’s never been a better time to get to know yourself and body more. For cookbook author & food writer, Julia Busuttil Nishimura, our Softening Shower Gel Rose and Softening Body Lotion Rose is her go-to for a botanicals rich, replenishing ritual that nourishes the body and mind. Being a busy mother of two, finding a few mindful moments in the day for herself is a necessity. We had a chat with Julia and spoke about how she cultivates small rituals throughout her busy day to keep her rejuvenated and relaxed. What does your body skin care ritual consist of? I have a very simple skincare routine. Usually, shower gel in the shower and I exfoliate once or twice a week, then moisturiser every day. It’s not much but it feels nice to do those things for myself. I make sure I shut the bathroom door so I can have some time to myself undisturbed, that feels really important to me. What's your connection between body skin care and self-care? I don’t have many minutes to myself in a day, with a newborn and a pre-schooler, often taking care of myself is the last thing I have time to do. However, just carving out a little time in the day to attend to my own needs is really important. When my skin feels good, I feel really comfortable and confident and happy that I’ve invested a little time for myself. Do you have a body skin care step that you swear by? Once a month I try and set aside an extended time for myself to create my own “spa day”. I light candles, diffuse some essential oils, listen to music, put on a face mask and take a bath. While it’s important for me to keep up my daily skin care, this monthly ritual is so rejuvenating and restorative and really tops me up. It’s something that I make sure I do regularly. Do you have any body skin care tips for new mums? We spend so much time in bed in the early days. Whether trying to feed or sleep it feels like our bed is our second home. I like to keep my body skin care products on my bedside table for easy access and a strong reminder to use them. Try and set aside time for yourself, even just a few minutes a day will feel wonderful. How do you fit in Jurlique Body Care products into your body skin care ritual? I only use shower gels and moisturisers that don’t contain any harsh chemicals as I find they strip my skin from their natural oils. That’s why I love using Jurlique products. I especially love the scent which feels very luxurious and calming in the shower. Shop Julia’s cookbook Ostro on her website Unearth a natural remedy for every body. Our aromatic selection of Shower Gels and Body Lotions are enriched with the restorative powers of Nature.

THE BENEFITS OF AROMATHERAPY - Jurlique US

THE BENEFITS OF AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy has been at the heart of Jurlique from the very beginning. Since 1985, our founders Ulrike and Jurgen Klein sought to unlock the healing and transformative powers of Nature to cultivate radiant, healthy looking skin by “understanding the importance of the soul of the plant which is essential oil”, and we’ve been keeping that commitment to purity 35 years on. What is aromatherapy? Simply put, aromatherapy is the therapeutic and healing use of natural aromatic substances such as herbs, spices, plants and essential oils to strengthen one’s physical and psychological wellbeing or in other words, mind, body and soul. Dating back as far as 5000 years ago, we can find the use of aromatics in ancient Ayurveda medicinal practices, ancient Egyptian skin care rituals and ancient Roman celebrations and ceremonies. While aromatics have been used for medicinal purpose for thousands of years, it was only until the late 1920s when the term ‘aromatherapy’ was coined by French chemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé. He had accidentally burnt his hand and as a reaction doused his hand into a nearby vat of Lavender oil – the burn healed quickly and left no scar, compelling him to study aromatics. Benefits of Aromatherapy for Mind Although inhalation of essential oils isn’t the only way to use aromatherapy, it is one of the most common forms, especially when comes to positively affecting the mind. Our ability to smell comes from specialised sensory cells that are directly connected to the brain. This is why certain smells trigger certain feelings. One smell might trigger a memory, another might trigger a feeling of calmness, one smell might even trigger hunger. So, when it comes to essential oils, they have the power to relax, energise and stimulate the mind through their scents/aroma. Lavender Essential Oil One of the most popular aromatherapy oils, Lavender, has a calming effect when used in aromatherapy. Its key benefits are to calm and relax the mind and senses. Add a few drops of Lavender Pure Essential Oil to a diffuser or vaporiser to soothe the mind and promote sleep. If you’re on the go, our Lavender Hydrating Mist will do the trick. A few spritzes and the calming scent will instantly soothe your mind. Lemon Essential Oil Lemon Oil has the power to re-energise and enliven the mind. Our Revitalising Blend Essential Oil features the pure natural essential oils of Lemon, Orange and Bergamot for a revitalising effect on the senses and promotes a sense of alertness. Adding it to your diffuser or oil burner will create a restorative environment for your mind. Pro tip: If you don’t have an oil burner, diffuser or vaporiser handy you can dot essential oils onto your pulse points or add to a warm bath of water to ease tension. But remember to never apply the essential oils to your skin directly. Due to their potency, it can cause significant skin irritation – instead dilute with a carrier like Jojoba Carrier Oil, then apply. Benefits of Aromatherapy for Skin Care In addition to the mood-boosting benefits of essential oils in aromatherapy, they’re also rich with natural antioxidants and antimicrobial properties that enhance and protect your skin. With their ability to soothe, hydrate, restore and improve radiance for an overall enhancement in skin wellness and glow - at Jurlique we make sure get every bit of into our skin care products. By using our exclusive Bio-Intrinsic™ process, we ensure the whole life of the plant is being used, to deliver an undiluted force of Nature to your skin. Its hydrating properties improve skin barrier function and help to retain essential moisture levels for smooth and radiant looking skin. IS ALL YOUR EXTRA SCREEN TIME DAMAGING YOUR SKIN? - Jurlique US

IS ALL YOUR EXTRA SCREEN TIME DAMAGING YOUR SKIN?

Zoom calls, emails, endless scrolling through social media and news updates…it’s no secret that a lot of us spend far too much time in front of a screen – and now more than ever. Personal preferences of whether you’re a digital native or a technophobe aside, this extra screen time could be having damaging effects on the skin…and actually lead to premature ageing, all because of the blue light that emanates from digital devices. What is blue light?Blue light is a range of the visible light spectrum, defined as having a wavelength between 400−525 nanometers. It accounts for 50% of the sunlight spectrum and is the only part of light that is visible to the naked eye. Most of our blue light exposure comes from the sun, but it also emanates from your smartphone, computers and TV screens. We’re all aware of the damaging effects of UV rays and the importance of wearing sunscreen to protect our skin but exposure to blue light can also be harmful – especially given our close proximity to smartphones and laptops. How blue light affects skinBlue light promotes stressors in skin that can cause photo-ageing; that is, ageing from exposure to light. Long-term blue light exposure can cause skin damage, including discolouration, inflammation, and weakening of the skin’s surface. How to protect your skin from harmful blue lightAs with most things health-related in life, protecting your skin from harmful blue light starts from within, with a diet rich in antioxidants (blueberries, strawberries, kale and artichokes are all good sources) and fatty acids to reduce and protect against inflammation. Topically, you can also add skin care products into your ritual that contain antioxidants, to prevent harmful free radicals and inflammation generated by light pollution. Our Rosewater Balancing Mist is not only hydrating for the skin, but it contains our exclusive Jurlique Rose extract which is a powerful antioxidant. Our iconic Herbal Recovery range is packed full of antioxidants, containing extracts of Viola Tricolor, Nasturtium, and Yarrow, that help to hydrate your skin naturally, leaving you with skin that is soft, smooth, and revitalised.

HOW TO USE AROMATHERAPY FOR STRESS RELIEF - Jurlique US

HOW TO USE AROMATHERAPY FOR STRESS RELIEF

Stress is a fact of life and we all encounter stressful situations at various points of our lives, but this year has brought new and unique stresses to everyone. It can have long term effects on our minds, bodies and skin, and sometimes finding something that ‘works’ is easier said than done. Enter aromatherapy, a natural and oft-cited way to help reduce stress. From what essential oils to use to help relieve stress to how to use them, discover our guide to relaxing aromatherapy below. How stress affects skinYou may notice that your skin doesn’t look its best when you’re stressed. Perhaps you’re breaking out more than usual, or pre-existing conditions such as eczema and psoriasis are worse than they have been in a while. This is because stress can cause a chemical response in your body that may make skin more sensitive.Stress can also lead to your body making more hormones like cortisol, which may cause the glands in your skin to produce oil…which could lead to breakouts. On top of that, you might be neglecting your skin care ritual as your mind is on other things. What is aromatherapy?Aromatherapy has been used as a holistic wellbeing tool for years, with even the Ancient Egyptians known for using different scents to alter their mood. Aromatherapy involves the use of aromatic plant materials, particularly essential oils, to alter one’s mood and promote wellbeing. Its primary benefits come from inhaling the scent of these essential oils, which can have benefits for the mind and body.Essential oils for stressLavender Pure Essential OilLavender essential oil has a calming, relaxing and balancing effect and is probably one of the best-known essential oils. In fact, one study found that spraying lavender spray on clothing was effective in reducing work related stress in nurses for three-four days.Bergamot Essential OilBergamot essential oil is also known for its calming and balancing effects. The oil comes from the peel of a fruit called Citrus bergamia and according to one study, it may improve negative emotions, reduce fatigue and help lower cortisol levels.Geranium Pure Essential OilGeranium essential oil is also known for being calming and relaxing when used in aromatherapy.Or try one of our relaxing essential oil blends such as Comforting Blend Essential Oil and Harmony Blend Essential Oil.How to do an aromatherapy massageCreate your own aromatherapy massage oil by mixing Jojoba Carrier Oil and your essential oil of choice for a calming, indulgent way to relax – try using it when you treat yourself to your next at-home spa day.Other ways to use essential oils include pouring a couple of drops into your bath or diffuser or inhaling it by adding a couple of drops to a tissue. If you’re looking for more stress relief techniques, try these 7 yoga poses to relieve stress.
