CREATING HARMONY WITH NATURE - Jurlique US

CREATING HARMONY WITH NATURE

This Lunar New Year, Jurlique is thrilled to partner with a multidisciplinary artist who embodies our philosophy of working in harmony with nature. Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Raku Inoue uses various methods and techniques to create works featuring organic materials like flowers, leaves and stems of various flora species1 – many of which are gathered in his back garden2. Inspired by the same botanical beauty as Jurlique, he feels a strong connection to nature, a sense of belonging, of peace and happiness2. Raku performs a special role, in connecting art and nature he works in harmony with his surrounds. He understands the process of creation and the cycle of life, and tells the story of a dragonfly that, when he was a child, would visit his grandmother. "From time to time, a dragonfly would fly into the living room, and my grandmother would always say it was her late husband reincarnated paying a visit. As a young kid, I was told everything eventually returns to nature. So evidently, his visits were symbolic and had a great influence on how I live today. As my grandmother would say, life is precious, during and even in the afterlife and through nature, we get to see this every day2" Nature has taught Raku about love and appreciation. He understands the importance to which organic materials must be treated with care and respect – giving his projects back to the soil once completed so the cycle of life can continue2. It is these sentiments that Jurlique shares with Raku. From our certified biodynamic* farming methods to our support of a healthy ecosystem that contributes to each of our products, we each work to awaken the life force of nature. Experimenting with different concepts, Raku first assembled Jurlique’s botanical ingredients into a form of tapestry inspired by pollinating species found on flower farms2. Refining his ideas, Raku has taken inspiration from rose varieties, grown on our farm in South Australia, to create exquisite patterns exclusively for the Lunar New Year edition of our Jurlique Body Oil. Raku’s patterns of light and delicate shapes are not only a devotion to nature’s craft but to the Rosa gallica extract in our Exclusive Edition Rose Body Oil that has been planted, handpicked and extracted with uncompromising care. *Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Jurlique’s products and farm are not certified by or affiliated with Demeter® USA or Demeter International. REFERENCES https://reikancreations.com/ Transcribed from existing audio with Raku

MENOPAUSE AND COLLAGEN PRODUCTION - Jurlique US

MENOPAUSE AND COLLAGEN PRODUCTION

Responsible for skin firmness and skin elasticity, collagen is the protein that holds our complexion in high regard. But in menopause, skin quickly loses collagen1. As estrogen drops, so too does skin’s collagen production2. COLLAGEN AND THE SKIN Collagen and elastin are the scaffolding in skin3 that keeps it youthful, taut and voluminous. While collagen does decrease gradually with age, the rate is more dramatic in the first five years of menopause4. Continuing to decline for the next 20 years, skin begins to lose its firmness, sag, with wrinkles and jowls more prominent2. MENOPAUSE AND THE SKIN Skin collagen is directly influenced by estrogen loss with approximately 30% of skin collagen lost in the first 5 years after menopause5. As a result of these hormonal changes, skin loses strength and elasticity1. Changes may be seen in the under-eye area; skin may feel thinner and pores may largen. HOW TO INCREASE COLLAGEN NATURALLY As water is a large percentage of collagen’s weight3, it’s important to stay well hydrated6. Eating a diet rich in a variety of proteins and vitamin C, an essential co-factor in collagen production, may support your body’s own collagen production7, 8. And using a daily SPF can also protect the breakdown of existing collagen in your skin9. FACIAL MASSAGE TO BOOST COLLAGEN A nightly facial massage ritual at home. Begin with a neck and shoulder massage to relieve sore muscles. Warm 1-2 pumps of your favourite serum or oil between fingertips, then gently press and smooth evenly onto face, neck and décolletage. Use a warm rose quartz crystal massage roller to help restore firmness to your skin. Follow with a cool jade massage roller to relieve hot flushes and leave skin in a state of calm. 5-MINUTES WITH MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST, RAKU INOUE - Jurlique US

5-MINUTES WITH MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST, RAKU INOUE

Born in Tokyo, Japan, and now based in Montreal, Canada, Raku creates art from the natural beauty that surrounds him. Inspired from the nature he has foraged; he transforms flowers, petals and stems into beautiful works of art. Often gathered from his own back garden, Raku’s creations are elevated by botanical beauty and celebrate the life force of nature. Inspired by our belief in a healthy eco system and working in harmony with nature, we sat down with Raku to discuss his work on our new Five Roses Exclusive Edition. What was your inspiration when working on the Exclusive Edition Mist and Hand Cream Five Roses for Jurlique? The source of inspiration for the mist and hand cream was its ingredients and the environment in which they are produced. The lush biodiversity and the care that Jurlique has for their farm in Australia was very inspiring. The idea of incorporating different pollinators – butterflies and ladybugs – seemed like a great concept since they are essential to maintaining good health and ensuring the longevity of the environment. It is an homage to the wildlife that inhabits the beautiful Jurlique farm Who are the women that inspire your work? My grandmother has been a big influence on my affinity for insects. She often took me to the local park to hunt for beetles and cicadas during summer. She would teach me a lot through these creatures such as value of life. Even small insects desire to live a fulfilled life. She has also taught me to recognise various species that inhabit Japan, and that's when I realised that there were so many with distinctive characteristics. I am hoping to bring that out through my creations Where do you see a connection between your work and Jurlique? Both Jurlique and I share the same love and respect for nature and what it offers us in terms of materials and humanity's wellbeing in general. We constantly take so much from nature so anything that we can do in order to give back is mandatory. Whether it's to open discussions or to create initiatives, we both agree that action is the most important step toward nature's conservation and the continuation of all life forms towards a better future. MEET THE FIVE QUEENS OF THE JURLIQUE FARM - Jurlique US

MEET THE FIVE QUEENS OF THE JURLIQUE FARM

This season we’ve launched two exclusive products that celebrate our remarkable history with roses. The hero ingredients that comprise our Exclusive Edition Rosewater Balancing Mist Five Roses and Exclusive Edition Hand Cream Five Roses derive from five very distinctive and different roses: Rosa gallica, Rosa rugosa, Rosa centifolia, Rosa canina and Rosa damascena. Knowing how much time and effort has gone into these products, we are all so proud of the end result, it is simply stunning. Our Five Roses are lovingly grown on the Jurlique farm. It’s also a biodynamic* farm, following holistic and sustainable farming practices that naturally look after plant health and the soil, ensuring nothing harmful goes into the earth. The rose is also the Queen of plants so she deserves the very best, and preparation is key. Here, we’ll introduce you to each member of our Five Roses family – sharing their individual traits that have been loved by generations. THE HERO ROSE Firstly, the Rosa gallica is our staple rose. A unique ingredient in almost all of our skin care formulas, the Rosa gallica is known for a deep velvety rose scent and helps to moisturise and hydrate the skin. We have been growing Rosa gallica’s since Jurlique started in 1985. They repeat flower from October until April producing over one tonne of rose petals. Picked by hand lovingly and knowingly by the Jurlique farm team, it is our favourite time of year. The additional four roses were planted on the Jurlique Farm in winter of 2018. It took three years of tender care, weeding, feeding, pruning and delicately harvesting each precious petal for this rare and wonderful exclusive-edition launch. However, the four roses are very different from one another: rugosa for its candy-like scent (which would make a lovely ingredient for cooking); canina for its white, lemony coloured centre; centifolia for its powdery, mild fragrance; and damascena for its intense and high-quality essential oil. THE SWEET ROSE Rosa rugosa, Roseraie de L’Hay, bred in 1901, almost smells like candy as it dries, and would taste wonderful in cakes and rose syrup. It has a dark fuchsia colour, is low growing and repeat flowers. It has very unique leaf which makes it easy to identify. THE ARTIST’S ROSE Rosa centifolia, Fantin Latour, was named after Henri Fantin-Latour, a French painter best known for his flower paintings and specifically roses. It has a mild powdering scent and is a medium sized shrub. It loves to be pruned after it flowers, which then increases its growth and blooms for the next season. This is a once off flowering rose, with one flush of blooms in early summer. THE WHITE ROSE Rosa canina, Madame Legras de St Germain, has been around since this mid 1800’s. It is the only white rose we grow at the Jurlique Farm and has a beautiful lemony centre. An extremely thorny bush, it only flowers in later spring, early summer and almost looks like a Camellia flower with an array of folding petals. THE ESSENTIAL ROSE Rosa damascena, Trigintipetala, bred in 1850, is the first rose bush to flower at the Jurlique Farm. It has a light but enveloping scent that lingers. It is the rose known to produce very high quality essential rose oil. Cherie Hutchinson, Farm Production Manager, has been part of the Jurlique family for nearly 10 years. FACIAL YOGA BENEFITS FOR EVERY SKIN TYPE - Jurlique US

FACIAL YOGA BENEFITS FOR EVERY SKIN TYPE

Skin care is self-care and facial yoga is the important daily ritual your routine needs. Whether you start the day improving lymph flow or ease tension after a long, screen-filled day, facial exercises can strengthen muscles, relax lines and better connect to ourselves. Not only a nourishing self-care ritual, facial massage and facial yoga may have the potential to stimulate collagen production, the key to younger and healthier looking skin. FACE YOGA BENEFITS Facial yoga works to stimulate the muscles, skin, and lymphatic system. By softening and relaxing your face muscles, face yoga benefits can be felt and seen inside and out1. Alleviating feelings of tension, stress, and worry, reducing wrinkles and puffiness, and lifting sagging skin. With immediate effects seen in increasing blood circulation to the face, facial yoga sculpts cheeks and jowls for a firmer and healthier complexion. The face yoga method is an opportunity to cultivate positive affirmations and gratitude in a daily self-care ritual. Try our favourite facial yoga rituals below. FACE YOGA EXERCISES - TERRIFIC TRIO Relieve Tension Stimulating this acupressure point helps to reduce eye strain caused by long days at your desk. Use it during the day or before you go to sleep. JURLIQUE BUSH REGENERATION - Jurlique US

JURLIQUE BUSH REGENERATION

At Jurlique, caring for our Earth and giving back to our land more than we take from it is at the heart of what we do. For us, this is working to the cycles of nature at our biodynamic* farm and ongoing efforts like our tree-planting initiatives. Right now, we are preparing to grow 2,000 seedlings that we will help rejuvenate the Cudlee Creek area after the devastating bushfires of 2019/2020 burnt through 23,000 hectares. "We cannot turn back time, but we can grow trees, rewild our gardens, and help restore our ecosystems." BIODIVERSITY AND NATURAL WATERWAYS Understanding how ecosystems provide crucial services such as pollination, seed dispersal, climate regulation, and water purification is all the more reason to ensure we protect our land and natural waterways. Biodiversity importantly boosts ecosystems where a healthy ecosystem may better withstand and recover from a variety of disasters. And in the case of bushfires, biodiversity is not only under threat but a critical part of response, recovery and regeneration. Bushland regeneration is key. In particular, watercourses in the fire scar are vital in protecting native fish that take refuge in permanent water pools over summer. Aside from water, one of the most important things native fish require is layers of vegetation growing alongside and in watercourses and permanent water pools – home to their food source, insects. Consequently, biodiversity efforts focus on providing a range of sedge and rush species for regeneration with shade from trees also important to keep water cool in summer and minimise evaporation. BUSHFIRES AND COMMUNITY From September 2019 to March 2020, devastating bushfires swept through Australia. Land, wildlife, homes and livelihoods were destroyed with communities left heartbroken. Only 38km from our Jurlique Farm, Cudlee Creek, in the Adelaide Hills, was declared an emergency disaster area with fires burning through 23,000 hectares and destroying hundreds of homes and buildings. Ever since, we vowed to nurture tree seedlings on our Jurlique Farm for planting at Cudlee Creek – helping to rejuvenate the affected area. SEEDINGS IN THE SPOTLIGHT This year, we’re growing seedlings for Trees for Life and Landscape SA’s winter 2022 plant giveaway for properties affected by the Cudlee Creek fire. Trees for Life, a South Australia-based not for profit organisation work to restore and protect South Australian landscapes. They have researched and collected seeds from the most badly affected plants, enabling us to nurture seedlings from the tree species that have been most impacted by the fires. Our Jurlique farm is currently preparing to grow 2,000 seedlings of River Red Gum, Tassel Sedge and Common Rush species as part of a special planting day. In February 2022, our dedicated Jurlique farm staff will take to planting the various seed species firmly into their recycled pots. And while in previous years we’ve been able to share the day with the surrounding community, we’re determined to continue our bush regeneration efforts even during a pandemic. Our Jurlique farm will be taking precious care of our seedlings over the coming months when they’ll finally be returned back to nature, to the community and ecosystems that once lost so much. But we’re not alone in restoring ecosystems. Join with friends, family, and community in planting trees, hosting local clean-ups, starting composting and making conscious choices that support the environment and honour our ecosystems. *Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Jurlique’s products and farm are not certified by or affiliated with Demeter® USA or Demeter International.
