NUTRI-DEFINE: THE STORY BEHIND AN ANTI-AGEING BREAKTHROUGH
In 2010, we began a quest to create the most powerful anti-ageing skin care possible. Today, the groundbreaking Biosome5 technology that drives Nutri-Define brings together luxury, nature and science to redefine anti-ageing skin care. Here’s the story behind how we developed this natural breakthrough. We set ourselves a clear goal: to develop a range that targeted the multiple signs of ageing – including deep lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness and elasticity and extreme dehydration – without compromising on luxury or our commitment to nature. And our first step was to find the perfect anti-ageing ingredients.Finding the perfect anti-ageing ingredientsWe searched the world to find the most powerful natural ingredients with proven anti-ageing qualities. Drawing on our decades of experience in biodynamic† farming and natural skin care, we selected five key ingredients:Horseradish: Helps improve skin firmness and elasticity.Rosemary: Enlivens the skin to help it look and feel rejuvenated.Peppermint: Revitalises dull skin while improving uneven skin texture.Mulberry root: High in antioxidants and phenolic compounds, it helps protect skin, brighten skin tone, and reduce the appearance of skin discolouration.Glycogen: Derived from pearlescent sea shells, it helps reinforce the skin’s natural defences and provides skin-firming benefits.Once we’d found the perfect natural anti-ageing ingredients, our next challenge was to find a way to deliver this luscious blend into the skin naturally. The solution: Jurlique’s first natural liposomeFollowing months of testing, our scientists developed a new, naturally derived liposome – a hollow, microscopic, fat-based vessel capable of safely delivering ingredients into the skin – with plant-based Lecithin.Together, our five anti-ageing botanicals and natural liposome became Biosome5 – an all-new technology with the power to safely deliver potent actives to where they’re most needed, so they can effectively address all the advanced signs of ageing.

What is ageing skin?Ageing skin occurs when skin changes in appearance and texture over time, from natural or environmental aggressors. It might seem obvious, but it’s important to understand the truth behind ageing skin, so you can treat it effectively, and – most importantly – minimise it where you can. There are a few myths and misconceptions regarding age-related skin concerns. The main one is that ‘ageing’ relates to ‘middle or old age’, which isn’t necessarily so. Skin ageing is a natural process, and begins as early as your 20s, as this is when your body slows its collagen and elastin production.Collagen, your skin’s natural fillerCollagen is the naturally occurring protein responsible for your skin’s plumpness and shape, firmness and strength. It originates from the Greek words for ‘glue’ and ‘producing’, which makes sense as collagen binds connective tissues such as skin, cartilage and tendons. As production of collagen begins to decline with age, skin starts to sag and wounds take longer to heal. Collagen also doesn’t just degenerate organically – it can also be damaged prematurely. Top causes include dehydration, smoking, ultraviolet (UV) light, diet and stress (more on these later).Want supple skin? Look to elastinLike collagen, elastin is another naturally occurring protein in your body, and again, the clue is in the name. Elastin is responsible for your skin’s elasticity – pinch yourself and watch your skin snap straight back to normal. That’s thanks to elastin.Unfortunately, repetitive facial expressions like smiling and frowning result in the gradual erosion of elastin fibres. It’s why you often see fine lines around the eyes and mouth, and across the forehead. Compromised elastin also causes sagging around the jawline and neck.Your hormones on ageingAs hormones levels change, so does the skin. Hormonal ageing in women is defined in part by declining oestrogen levels, which affects the production of collagen and elastin. During menopause, this is increasingly more pronounced. Oestrogen also impacts melanin production and distribution, and when paired with UV damage, can result in skin pigmentation or age spots on the hands, face and chest.UV light and photoageingPhotoageing refers to the long-term effects of the sun on your skin, as a result of UV light exposure. The sun is the single greatest cause of premature and accelerated skin ageing. Australians are particularly susceptible to UV damage – not only because of the ozone layer and high levels of UV radiation, but also due to our cultural tendency for leisure outdoors. Sun damage can cause coarse, uneven and dull skin, as well as pigmentation and age spots, redness and burning, and premature lines and wrinkles.Genetics also play a role in photoageing. People with fair skin are far more likely to suffer visible signs of sun damage than those with darker skin. That said, we all need to take precautions when in the sun, as it’s easier to avoid than undo any potential harm. A broad spectrum sunscreen like our Sun Specialist SPF40 High Protection Cream provides high-level protection against UVA and UVB rays, and also helps skin stay hydrated.AA17_Blog_AA_BlogBanner-v.1Apart from natural ageing and photoageing, what are the other causes of ageing skin?EnvironmentAir-conditioning, extreme weather conditions and pollutants can all accelerate skin ageing over time. Wearing gloves when you do housework, gardening or home repairs helps preserve the skin on your hands, which is one of the very first places to show signs of ageing.SleepYour body restores itself during this time, so it’s important to get your beauty sleep. A well-rested face is sure to appear more rosy, fresh and plump. Conversely, fatigued skin looks dull and uneven in tone.DietPoor nutrition will eventually show up on your skin. To optimise your diet for younger-looking skin, eat less salt, sugar and processed foods, and increase your intake of whole foods and fresh fruit and vegetables high in vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants.DehydrationYour skin will thank you for increasing your daily water intake (as well as foods high in water). But it’s also important to cut back on dehydrating substances like caffeine, alcohol, salty foods and sugary drinks.SmokingApart from its other significant health dangers, smoking can speed up premature ageing, as well as impair the skin’s ability to heal itself. People who smoke long-term are also more likely to develop thick, leathery skin and a sallow complexion.ExerciseRegular exercise stimulates circulation and helps your skin appear more vibrant, even as it ages naturally. Of course, the flow-on effects of exercise – such as better sleep and a healthier approach to life – are also likely to improve your wellbeing, which can only benefit your skin.HealthExtreme or extended periods of stress, emotional turbulence, illness and other adverse circumstances can influence your health, and therefore your skin. During these periods you’re also more likely to neglect skin care rituals, experience sleep issues and make poor food choices.GenesAs we’ve noted, those with fairer skin are more susceptible to sun damage, but other genetic factors can also influence your skin’s appearance. Some people inherit beneficial genes, but even in those cases, taking care of your skin pays big dividends (and balances out the luck factor).NeglectForgetting to apply sunscreen, using poor skin care products or not adhering to an anti-ageing skin care ritual hinders your skin in both the short and longer term.AA17_Blog_AA_BlogBanner-v.2The tell-tale signs of ageing skinFirst signs of ageingAs we’ve seen, ageing skin affects a range of age groups. There are early signs and symptoms of skin ageing that can begin as early as your mid-20s, especially when external influences come into play. These include:Early sun damage, such as frecklesDry skinDull or fatigued skinLoss of colour or glowOur Herbal Recovery Signature Serum contains a concentrated blend of natural ingredients that help improve skin dullness, restore radiance, and minimise the appearance of fine lines. It helps smooth, revitalise and protect for skin that visibly glows.Visible signs of ageingThe first visible signs of ageing are often seen in women in their 30s. This is commonly the first time many women express their age-related skin concerns, and begin to search for simple and effective, natural solutions for:Fine linesLoss of firmnessIrregular or rough textureUneven skin tone or complexionWe created our Purely Age-Defying Firming and Tightening Serum specifically to address these visible signs of ageing. Its concentrated plant extracts target the appearance of wrinkles, loss of firmness and uneven skin tone to leave your skin looking rejuvenated.Advanced signs of ageingIn later years, as cells turn over less frequently, essential collagen and elastin production slows. As menopause approaches, we see more pronounced signs and symptoms of ageing. These include:Deep-set wrinkles and linesSlack, loose or sagging skin and loss of liftLoss of fat beneath the skin, occasionally leading to a gaunt appearanceAge spots (also known as sun spots), discolouration and pigmentationTransparent, fragile skin due to thinning of the topmost skin layer, the epidermis‘Leathery’ appearanceSpider veinsThe botanical oils in our Nutri-Define Superior Retexturising Facial Serum work to address the advanced signs of ageing and improve luminosity and hydration, for younger-looking skin that looks plump, luminous and regenerated.Your anti-ageing skin action plan–prevent and restoreAs we’ve seen throughout this anti-ageing skin guide, caring for your skin should start as early as possible. Your best chance of keeping your skin looking youthful and healthy for longer is to promote your overall wellbeing, through good lifestyle choices and a great skin care ritual. These combined are your key to preventing premature ageing, so you can experience your best skin at any age. Natural ageing is, of course, inevitable and unavoidable, but you can minimise its effects. Choose pure and powerful anti-ageing skin care that restores balance, smoothness and hydration. And whatever stage of life you’re living, don’t forget to celebrate it in full by looking and feeling your best every single day.

Read moreHOW STRESS AFFECTS YOUR SKIN (AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT!)
Nurturing happy, healthy skin begins with using the best products to cleanse, moisturise and rejuvenate – but it doesn’t stop there. The truth is, caring for your skin can be a battle, and stress can be a major factor.None of us are immune to stress. It can sneak up quietly. Other times it charges at us head-on. But how does stress affect your skin?In times of duress, our bodies produce a steroid hormone called cortisol which, aside from the sparking the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism, increases your skin’s natural oil production cycle. This can allow bacteria to breed, resulting in breakouts. When you’re under attack from stress, you need a strategy to help relieve it – the first step is to consult your healthcare practitioner.Next, here’s what else you can do.Listen to your bodyStress triggers can be difficult to pin down, especially when you’re busy. If you’re feeling tired, having trouble sleeping, experiencing changes in appetite or finding it hard to focus, ensure you take time out to do the things that make you happy and promote relaxation. This might involve getting back to that book you never finished, catching up with friends or settling in for a well-timed Saturday nap.Maintain your skin care ritualWork stress often scrambles our priorities, so keeping up routines like your skin care ritual can help you feel more balanced. Proper cleansing is also a lovely way to slow down and spend some quality time pampering yourself after a long, hard day. Treat your daily cleansing ritual as an opportunity to indulge in some much deserved you-time, using a cleanser with natural ingredients that’s suited to your skin type and won’t cause irritation.Experience our Rosewater Balancing Mist for a mindful moment during the day. It also contains natural antioxidants ingredients which help keep your skin fresh, hydrated and revitalised.Relax, reflect, rejuvenateWhile an effective skin care ritual is key to keeping skin clear and healthy, addressing the causes of stress is even more important. Always consult your healthcare professional as a starting point.Identifying situations that make you feel anxious or overwhelmed, recognising but not engaging with present emotions, and gradually changing your response to them can help you better manage stress over time, in positive ways.Recognising the physical and emotional experience of stress when it arises, accepting its presence, and practicing deep, abdominal breathing also helps neutralise anxiety.Talking through issues with an attentive friend or trained professional can help liberate stress and make sense of the big picture. Otherwise, meditation and massage are also great ways to slow down and reconnect with what’s truly important – you and your wellbeing.Stress is a part of modern life, but it doesn’t need to rule yours. Read moreUNDERSTANDING YOUR SKIN TYPE
We all want to look and feel our best, so when it comes to your complexion, tailoring your skin care ritual to your skin type is key. But how do you know which skin type is yours? The way your skin appears and behaves can tell a lot about what’s going on behind the scenes, particularly when it comes to your overall skin health and well-being.Read on to learn how to identify and understand your skin type, so you can achieve your skin care goals.Dry skinA rough, flaky complexion that feels tight after cleansing is typical for anyone with dry skin. Dry skin can occur with external conditions that disturb your skin’s capacity to retain moisture (like extreme cold or heat), resulting in a thin, patchy surface. However, dry skin can also be a matter of genetics. The biggest issue with dry skin is prolonged dehydration can actually increase your chances of sensitivity and premature ageing. For dry skin types, boosting hydration during your skin care ritual is essential. When cleansing or exfoliating, choose natural, hydrating formulas that won’t strip your skin’s oil, and opt for rich moisturising creams and serums that deeply hydrate to restore skin health.blog-4-supporting-img-623x313-v2Ageing skinAs time goes by, our skin’s appearance and texture changes, affecting firmness, elasticity and moisture. Drier or duller skin than usual, as well as sun damage and the beginning of fine lines, can indicate age-related skin concerns. That said, it’s never too late to slow the ageing process by gracefully combating dryness, dullness and visible signs of ageing. Vigilant sun care and deeply hydrating moisturisers with pure, potent natural ingredients can help protect skin – no matter what your age.Tip: avoid harsh cleansers or exfoliants as they dehydrate, compounding moisture loss and the potential for sensitivity. Deeply nourishing creams and oils can help rejuvenate moisture and target problem areas like lines and wrinkles, as well as skin tone and firmness.Sensitive skinSensitive skin is easily irritated by external stimulants, evident in the red, blotchy symptoms that follow. You may notice itchiness, visible rashes or hives, swelling, or a tingling, stinging or burning sensation during skin reactions. Sensitive skin is more common in paler tones, the skin surface thinner and more translucent, making sensitive skin extra susceptible to environmental conditions and effects (for example, sunburn and photo-ageing).As sensitive skin types are prone to drying and irritation, avoid products with ingredients like artificial colours and fragrances. Natural skin care products with botanical extracts such as Calendula can also help soothe red skin and rebalance sensitivity.Oily skinYour skin’s sebaceous glands are responsible for the production of skin oil, or sebum. This can be influenced by many things, but the most common factor is hormones (think back to your skin during adolescence). When too much sebum escapes through your pores, a shiny, oily complexion results, with the additional problem of facilitating blemishes. Large, open pores can be an indication of oil production, but visibly smaller pores can also generate oily skin conditions – in the latter case, the culprit is likely to be skin care product-related.So what can you do? While it’s tempting to look for products that eliminate sebum, harsh ingredients can dehydrate skin – which can actually increase oil production. With oily skin types, cleansing gently but thoroughly, and finishing with a light moisturising lotion to rebalance oiliness, can help keep your skin’s oil production in check.Normal skinNormal skin is actually quite unusual, as other skin types are much more prevalent. Normal skin is clear and even, with a well-balanced surface that retains moisture, and minimal breakouts.Normal skin indicates healthy circulation, although impurities can occur from time to time, depending on individual skin care rituals. The trick for normal skin types is maintenance, so gentle, natural skin care products that focus on balance are best. The subtle differences between each skin type are a reality for all of us, whether we’re dry, ageing, sensitive, oily or normal. Identifying and understanding your skin type, and what it needs to look and feel its best, is the key to unlocking your skin’s wellness. What skin type are you, and what tips and tricks have you learned on your journey to skin wellness? Read moreWHAT TO EAT FOR GLOWING SKIN BY JACQUELINE ALWILL
Jacqueline Alwill’s philosophy at The Brown Paper Bag is about nourishing the body inside and out with a delicious wholefoods and a plant-based diet. Over the course of two weeks, Jacqueline’s Challenge will help you find your inner glow by learning to commit to healthy and wholefoods eating.Glowing skin is something most of us yearn for, but it’s not something we can necessarily achieve over night. As with any aspect of our health we have to nourish the body inside and out, break old habits and make new patterns in order to change and create rituals in self-care. We have beautiful skin care at our fingertips but what we put inside our body is just as important as what we put on our skin in order to find our glow. Let’s take a look at how we can achieve radiant skin by nourishing from the inside out.Focus on whole foods for whole nourished skinBuilding a wholefoods diet into our lives is the ticket to longevity in health and radiant skin and yet, is one so easily missed. With busy schedules, work, family and friend commitments, our diet is often the first to go out the window and more often than not our skin follows. Start slowly and begin by adding these simple steps into your life to help transition into wholefoods eating, a well-nourished body and beautiful skin.Reduce processed and refined foods in the diet that do not nourish our body or our skin. Focus on reducing and eliminating packaged foods containing refined sugars, additives, preservatives, artificial sweeteners and ingredients matched with numbers and instead introduce an abundance of whole unprocessed foods to our lives. Fuel the body with fresh vegetables, fruits, healthy fats and quality sources of protein and feel the change for the good.If the glow in skin is a little dim, then we need to establish goals to achieve results. Feeling a sense of purpose with health and carving our way to feeling and looking sensational does not come without setting out a few ways to get there. Consider the beauty in skin and health like a map and make check points along the way. Reducing sugar, processed and refined foods might be the first stop, increasing water intake the next, introducing a new ingredient to eat our way to delicious skin third and it goes on. By establishing goals and ticking the boxes we make ourselves responsible for the health of our body and beauty of our skin.Nourish the gut to find the glowThe gut is the seat of our health and without caring for the state of our gut we cannot expect our skin to thrive. Through our gut we absorb the beautiful nutrients from food so with that in mind we need to mindfully nourish the gut so it can effectively do all in it’s power to give our skin nutrition from within. To do so consider…Integrating a small cup of bone broth each day to the diet. The collagen from the bones breaks down to gelatin to restore gut lining and boost the beautiful elasticity and youthfulness in skin too.Foods rich in probiotics such as cultured or fermented vegetables, natural (unsweetened) yoghurt, miso and fermented tea can help establish healthy bacteria in the gut to aid the digestion and absorption of nutrients in our food. This is essential to see changes in our health and our skin.Warming foods in the later stage of the day help to ease digestion as our body leads into restful hours. Whilst raw foods are wonderful to amp up in the earlier stages of the day, many people respond better to cooked foods to close the day. Integrate cooked vegetables (steamed, baked, sautéed or grilled) with quality proteins and healthy fats as a beautiful way to warm into rest and wake feeling energised and vibrant.Eat a radiant rainbowWhen considering the health of our skin we need to nourish with abundance and variety and a beautiful way to do this is to eat the colours of the rainbow from fresh whole foods produce. In particular, introduce the following essential nutrients to fuel lustrous healthy skin. Fill the diet with:ACE… or Vitamins A, C and E from carrots, kale, spinach, oranges, broccoli, brussel sprouts, almonds, avocados and seeds. Also look for fresh fruits and vegetables in rich colours such as raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, capsicum, sweet potato, beetroot and greens a plenty to help protect the effects of ageing and oxidative stress on the skin.Selenium… a beautiful trace mineral that can aid the absorption of Vitamin E in the skin, reduce breakdown of collagen and maintain elasticity. Get an added Selenium boost to your diet with walnuts, brazil nuts, nourishing whole grains and seafood.Essential Fats from avocados, almonds, linseeds, brazil nuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, pepitas, olives and their oils, coconut and fatty fish are delicious, nourishing, satisfying for hunger cravings when included in the These Essential Fats also help skin by reducing inflammation, providing a rich natural moisture and repairing damage to skin cells.Zinc to help regulate the action of sebaceous glands and oil production, heal damaged tissues and wounds and aid problematic skin conditions. To add zinc into your diet and skin, try adding more poultry, legumes, wholegrains and seafood.blog-11-supporting-img-623x313-v1RASPBERRY CHOCOLATE TARTGF : DF : SF : V : VG : PALEOServes 8-10Tart base:1 1/2 (225g) cups almonds1 1/2 (175g) cups pecans6 medjool dates, pitted1/2 cup coconut oil, melted100g raw chocolate, broken into pieces2 teaspoons vanillaFilling:1 cup coconut yoghurt1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste2 tablespoons maple syrup375 g raspberries (approx. 3 punnets)To make the tart base combine the almonds, pecans and dates in a food processor and blend for 30 seconds to combine. As part of our Jurlique Wellbeing Challenge, pilates teacher and general fitness guru Leah Simmons has created an exclusive fitness plan for you to take on over the next four weeks. As part of this challenge, she guest blogs about her own personal fitness journey, relationship with food and some great tips along the way.*We all know that exercise does wonders for our body. The benefits of leading a healthy, active lifestyle are numerous and, although it may be harder than sin to drag yourself out of bed for that early morning workout, I’m fairly certain no one ever regrets doing it after they’re done. But the rewards of exercising transcend far beyond just dropping those kilos or cultivating your six-pack. There are additional, more subtle effects that exercising has on our bodies… perhaps you are sleeping better, maybe your hair is shinier or you are feeling less anxious? One of the more visible benefits is the effect it has on our skin. Our skin is our largest living organ, made up of billions of skin cells and blood vessels. So, like every other organ in our body, it needs nourishment and nutrients to thrive.Skin-Fit… Is There Such a Thing?Go For The GlowYou’ve just finished your workout, your heart is beating like a Metallica drum solo and you crawl to the bathroom to catch your breath. You peer into the mirror and after the initial shock of seeing that exhausted sweaty face staring back at you, you notice that your skin has taken on a kind of golden sheen. You are glowing!! And this is no accident, believe me. When you get your heart really pumping, you deliver a flood of newly oxygenated blood to the living layers of your skin and skin cells. Your circulation is firing and you start producing more natural oils thus giving you that gorgeous “glow.”blog-8-supporting-img-623x313-v1Sweat It OutHave you ever wondered where “sweat” actually comes from? Sweating is our body’s natural cooling system. When our body temperature increases, our pores secrete sweat to remove excess heat and waste from our skin through evaporation. You could almost say sweating is actually like having a mini-facial. Imagine those pesky little blackheads that you just can’t seem to get rid of… sweating can push the impurities out from your pores. It’s important to note however that you must wash your face immediately after working out to ensure that the gunk doesn’t get sucked back in!Wrinkles Be Gone!!Exercise can also help regulate skin-significant hormones and prevent free-radical damage. When we get stressed where is the first place it shows? On our faces… Dark circles, sagging skin and a pasty pallor are not a healthy person make… and this can be due to elevated levels of the stress-hormone Cortisol. Regular exercise can help maintain healthy levels of this hormone and also supports the production of collagen which can help keep your skin stay firm and supple-looking.Don’t Worry… Be Happy!!And finally… exercise just makes you FEEL GOOD!! You’ll have a spring in your step and your energy levels will sky rocket. And sooner or later you’ll be rocking around town with a giant grin on your face. Laughter is the fastest and easiest way to elevate your mood and help you look and feel amazing. When you smile with your whole face it’s like an instant facelift! So turn that frown upside down and laugh your way through your next gym session!!A Few Things to NoteAlways remember to protect your skin from the sun and wear a broad spectrum sunscreen whether you are working out indoors or out. I’m currently obsessed with Jurlique’s SPF40 Sun Specialist Cream – it smells amazing!Try to avoid wearing makeup while working out. You want to try and get rid of dirt on your face, not add to it!Bring your favourite cleanser in your gym bag and make sure that you wash your face immediately after your workout. I love Jurlique’s Herbal Recovery Antioxidant Mousse which has a light, foamy texture and is great for combination skin.Wash your hands thoroughly after working out before you touch your face. You don’t even want to know what bacteria lurks on communal gym equipment… yuck.Be aware of too-tight clothes and skin chafing – it you are going to be sweating a lot make sure you are in some comfortable gear.If you are swimming in a chlorinated pool then make sure you rinse off in some fresh water immediately after you get out – the chemicals used in pools can be quite irritating and drying for some skin types. And don’t forget to lock-in moisture for face, body and hands. I love Herbal Recovery Antioxidant Face Oil and the always classic Rose Hand Cream by Jurlique.Check out the Jurlique Fitness Challenge for fitness tips, how-to’s and a four week calendar to get you started.Download the Jurlique X Leah Simmons Fitness Challenge hereblog-wellbeing-button-downl-challenge*The views contained in this Blog are those of the author and do not represent the views or opinions of Jurlique. Read moreGO WITH THE GLOW – HOW TO GET YOUR BEST SUNLESS TAN EVER
Summer and a sun-kissed tan go hand in hand, even if you don’t live along the coast. But the sun can be damaging to your skin and can cause premature ageing.Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be that way. Sunless tanning products can help you achieve a bronzed body, without the dangers of baking in the sun – so you can have glowing skin all year round. Here’s the top six tips you need to get your best sunless tan ever:1. Go with the right glowThe first step is choosing the right self-tanning product for your skin.Sunless tanning options include sprays, mousses and lotions. Tanning lotions are the most hydrating, and can be applied to clean skin like a regular moisturiser. Lotions also tend to offer more even coverage, layering well for dramatic effect.2. Wax on, wax offHair removal is next on your pre-tan checklist. Wax or shave well before application (around 24 hours prior), to provide less hair resistance for tan absorption. This also minimises the chance of accidentally nicking colour away with your razor.3. Smooth operatorThe golden rule of sunless tanning: smooth skin equals self-tan success. Pamper yourself by taking the time to prepare and nourish your skin for a flawless tan.Showering prior to application washes away excess oil, while an exfoliation glove helps buff away dead skin cells (or remnants of a previous tan). This ensures the best base for a fresh application – smooth, soft skin.Make sure to moisturise rough patches, like the wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, feet and hairline, as an uneven surface can result in a patchy, streaky tan.4. Clever handiworkIt’s easy to create a natural shade across your entire body, including the palms of your hands. Avoid orange-tinted palms or residue beneath your fingernails by using latex gloves when applying your sunless tan.To apply tanning lotion to the back of your hands, use a cotton wool ball with a small amount of product. A helpful tip – add a little body moisturiser to blend product into your wrists and fingers to avoid streaking. This also applies for any smudges or mistakes.Generally speaking, acrylic nails or gel manicures and pedicures won’t be affected by self-tans. However, to be on the safe side, wipe your nails after each application as this will prevent contact stains.5. Work from the bottom upThe best time to start the tanning process is 30 minutes after showering, when your skin is most absorbent. A handy trick is to finish your shower with a short burst of cold water to shrink pores – this maximises even coverage.Apply the first layer of sunless tan, starting from the feet and ankles, and work your way back up. Don’t forget to apply to your back and neck. Self-tans can discolour your hair and eyebrows, so protect your hairline with a barrier cream if you’re applying tanner to your face. Again, mix with a small amount of moisturiser for an even application.Any leftover product should be used for the back of your hands and feet, making sure to blend well at the wrists and ankles to avoid a ‘tanning sleeve’.6. Skin careThe best way to prolong your summer glow is with effective skin aftercare.Unless you’re using an express formula, avoid showering for at least 10-12 hours, and wear loose clothing to allow the tanner to absorb. When showering after a tan, don’t worry about the colour washing away. The cosmetic bronzer will wash off to reveal a gorgeous, sun-kissed tan.Apply moisturising cream after your first shower and continue moisturising daily to extend the longevity of your tan.And drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin for a glow that lasts all year round. You don’t need to spend a fortune in a tanning salon to get a sun-kissed tan this summer. Simply follow our six tips and get the glow you’ve always wanted.Shop the Story: Sun Specialist Sunless Tanner
